Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT consists of an unventiated auminum cabinet having a hinged front pane and removabe cabe entrance pates on the two sides, top and bottom (see Figures 1-1 and 3-1). The cabinet contains soder type termina boards for terminating cabing from switch receptaces and for connecting externa ines to remote contro stations and transmitters and interconnecting cabes. The cabinet has ten rotary switches, stack ed in two vertica coumns of five each. The switches are wired so that transmitter circuits are parae in the two vertica coumns. The common wiper contact of each rotary switch is wired for connection to a remote contro station which aows for a tota of ten remote contro stations per switchboard. Page 1
1.6 NTERNAL WRNG nterna connections for the ten rotary switch units in Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT are made to the underside of two banks of soder type connection terminas, ocated in the cabinet base. Connections to externa equipments are to be made to the top terminas of each bank. (See Figures 1-2 and 1-3). The bottom bank of terminas is secured to the cabinet base and comprises sixteen strips of tweve terminas each. The top bank of terminas is secured to threaded spacers on top of the bottom bank of terminas and comprises ten strips of tweve terminas each. The bottom bank of termina stripes is numbered T1 through T6 (each strip reating to a remotey controed transmitter) and R1 through R10 (each strip reating to a remote contro station). Each of the ten termina strips in the top bank (numbered X1 through X10) is connected internay to rotary position "X" of its respective switch unit. This is for the purpose of connecting termina strips X1 through X10 to corr esponding R1 through R10 termina strips in additiona Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT SWTCH ASSEMBLY A rotary switch consists of 6 rotary-switch wafers. The conductors of rotary-switch wafers are printed wiring on approved phenoic materia. Contacts are radiay arranged on both sides of the phenoic wafers and positioned so that an active contact segment on one side is directy opposite an active contact segment on the other side. Each switch has 7 active contact segments on each side, and 1 "off" position. Thus, each wafer contros 2 circuits. The active and inactive segments are arranged in reation to the "off" position so that wafers can be inserted into the switch assemby without regard to which face of the wafer is right hand or eft hand. Circuits through the contact segments are made by a doube, insuated, rotary arm. The design and spacing of the active and inactive segments are such that the rotary contacts are non-shorting; that is, the rotary contact on each side of a wafer wi cear one active contact segment before engaging the next active segment. 1.8 SWTCH WAFERS ' The printed wiring wafers are individuay mounted in a frame so that the wafers can be pugged into pace and engage a receptace. Contacts of the receptace connect with the printed wiring of the wafers to compete the severa switch circuits to the externa cabing. When the switch is in the "off" position, a sot in the rotary mechanism is aigned with a sot in the wafer so that any wafer can be withdrawn without otherwise disconnecting or dismanting the switch assemby. The framework hods the switch wafers in proper aignment by sots or grooves into which the wafers can be easiy inserted and ocked into pace. The framework contains a detent device to assure positive positioning of the contacts of the mechanism on the active segments of the switch wafers. 2.1 GENERAL SECTON 2 OPERATNG NSTRUCTONS Each switch operating knob corresponds to a remote contro station (see Figure 3-2). Each rotary switch position (one through six) corresponds to a controed transmitter. Rotary position X corresponds to an extension connecting a remote station circuits to additiona Switchboards. Rotary postion OFF disconnects a remote station circuits. 2.2 SNGLE UNT NSTALLATON When it is required, for exampe, that remote contro station number two is to have contro of transmitter number three; switch knob designated number two is rotated unti its pointer indicates position three on its respective dia pate (See Figure 2-1). Any of the remote stations may thus be connected to contro any of the transmitters connected to the system (See Figure 2-2). 2.3 MULTPLE UNT NSTALLATON When, in a mutipe switchboard instaation, it is required, for exampe, that remote station number two is to have contro of transmitter nu mber nine; switch knob designated number two is paced so that its pointer indicates position X; switch knob designated number two on the appropriate additiona switchboard pane is rotated unti its pointer indicates position nine. This connects remote station number two to the contro circuits of transmitter number nine. (See Figure 2-3). J Page 2
( When, in a mutipe switchboard instaation, it is required, for exampe, that remote station number tweve is to have contro of transmitter number six, switch knob designated number tweve on the appropriate additiona switchboard pane is rotated unti its pointer indicates position number six (See Figure 2-4). Foowing the above procedures any remote contro station can be switched to contro any transmitter connected in the system. SECTON 3 NSTALLATON 3.1 LOCATON n ocating Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT consideration must be given to the number of switchboards required for the tota remote contro stations, number of transmitters to be connected, and ampe aowance for the mutipe conductor cabes necessary. Four 13/32 inch diameter hoes are provided in the cabinet for mounting. Cearance must be maintained for the hinged front pane. The cearance must be sufficient to aow the pane to swing about a 90 degree arc to provide accessibiity to the termina boards on the back of the cabinet. (See Figure 3-1). 3.2 CABLE ENTRANCE PLATES Removabe access pates are provided on top, bottom and sides, of each switchboard for instaation of entrance bushings for externa contro cabes (See Figure 3-1). n mutipe instaations, access pates on adjacent cabinets shoud be removed to expose the openings for interconnecting cabes. See paragraph EXTERNAL TRANSMTTER CABLE CONNECTONS Connections from the contro circuits of tr ansmitters are to be made, in order, to termina strips T1 through T6. (See Figures 3-3 and 3-4). To obtain access to the bottom bank of terminas remove six screws hoding the top bank of terminas to the supporting spacers, ift the top bank of terminas away from the base of the cabinet and ay them on the back of the switch housings. A transmitter cabe connections are made at this time, incuding incoming ines from transmitter equipments and outgoing cabe B-1, if used. (See paragraph 3-5). 3.4 EXTERNAL REMOTE CONTROL STATON CONNECTONS Connections from remote contro stations an to be made, in order, to termina strips R1 through R10. (See Figures 3-3 and 3-4). Connections from X1 through X10 in horizontay reated additiona switchboards shoud be made, in order, to termina strips R1 through R10. These atter connections provide for the contro of fro m one to six additiona transmitters by the remote contro stations connected to the first switchboard. Repace the top bank of terminas. Make a outgoing A-1 and A-2 cabe connections, if used, to appropriate X terminas. 3.5 EXTENDNG REMOTE CONTROL STATONS When more than ten remote contro stations are to be connected, additiona Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT must be instaed. One additiona switchboard (in vertica reation to the first switchboard) must be instaed for each ten remote contro stations added. See Figure 3-5 for instaation detais of cabe B-1 when more than 10 Remote Contro Stations are required. 3.6 EXTENDNG TRANSMTTER STATONS When more than six transmitters are to be connected, additiona Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT must be instaed. On e additiona switchboard (in horizonta reation to the first switchboard) must be instaed for each six transmitters added. See Figure 3-7 for instaation detais of cabes A-1 and A-2 when more than six Transmitters are to be controed by Remote Contro Stations. 3.7 NTERCONNECTNG CABLES ( Cabe Assemby W-101 (See Tabe t-1) consists of two interconnecting cabes designated A-1 and A-2. t is required for each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT, excuding number one, to be instaed in horizonta reation. See Figure 3-7 for instaation detais of interconnecting cabes A-1 and A-2 when contro of more than six transmitters is required. (See Figure 3-9 for Cabe Assemby W-101). Page 3
Cabe Assemby W-102 consists of interconnecting cabe designated B-1. t is required for each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-863/SRT, excuding number one, to be instaed in vertica reation. See Figure 3-5 for instaation detais of interconnecting cabe B-1 when more than ten remote contro stations are required. (See Figure 3-10 for Cabe Assemby W-102). See paragraph 3-8 for instaation of interconnecting cabes to SB-83/SRT. 3.8 REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMTTER TRANSFER SWTCHBOARD SB-83/SRT WTH TRANSMTTER TRANSFER SWTCHBOARD SB-988/SRT f proper precautions are observed Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT can be used as a direct repacement for Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT. Group instaations shoud not have a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT instaed between incoming circuits from remote contro stations and Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT. Damage wi resut if an interposed Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT is connected to transmitter circuits at the time a circuit is seected on a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT. A Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-83/SRT ocated between a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB--988/SRT and incoming remote contro station circuits, must have its contro knob in the off position before a circuit seection is made on Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT. Conversey, it is required that Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT be in the off position before seecting circuits on an interposing Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT. Due to the necessary precautions invoved, the foowing repacement pans are generay recommended. n a group instaation in which Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT is to be used as repacement for Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT, a Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT being incorporated in the group sha be so paced that they are aways the first switchboards to which incoming remot e contro station contro ines are terminated. Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT shoud not be ocated between a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT and remote contro station incoming ines. ssume that a bank of switchboards of any number have the contro cabes from a remote contro stations entering from the eft hand side of the bank of switchboards: Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT shoud be instae d starting at the eft hand side of the bank; Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-83/SRT shoud aways be paced to the right of Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT; and a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT shoud not be instaed in the group between any two Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT. Figures 3-12 and 3-13 show typica instaation arrangements that meet the above requirements. Take as an exampe an existing instaation containing ony Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-83/SRT, where it is required to rep ace one or more with Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT. t wi be necessary that a Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB- 83/SRT, connected in the circuits between the type SB-83/SRT to be repaced and incoming contro ines from remote contro stations, aso be removed and repaced with Transmitter Transfer Switchboards, SB-988/SRT. t is imperative that no Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/ SRT be instaed between any Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT and incoming remote contro ines. Figure 3-12 shows the metho d of instaation using these procedures. For exampe a bank of 8 Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-83/SRT, having four switchboards in horizonta order and 2 switchboards in vertica order, require repacement of the third switchboard, from remote contro station incoming ines, in the first horizonta row. n this case it wi be necessary to remove the two Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-83/SRT that are interposed, and repace with two Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-988/SRT. (See Figure 3-12)... Assume that in the previous exampe it is required to repace the second switchboard from remote contro station incoming ines, in the second horizonta row. n this case it wi be necessary to aso remove the one Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT that is interposed, and repace with a Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT. (See Figure 3-12). Cabe Assemby W-104 (See Tabe 5-1) consists of two interconnecting cabes designated A-1-A :md A-2-A. t is required for connecting each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/ SRT to each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT, instaed in horizonta reation. (See Figures 3-8 and 3-14). Cabe Assemby W-103 (See Tabe 5-1) consists of one interconnecting cabe designated B-1-B. t is required for connecting each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT to each Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-83/SRT, instaed in vertica reation. (See Figure 3-11). 3.9 MARKNG OF TRANSMTTER AND REMOTE CONTROL STATON Each of the ten switch units in Transmitter Transfer Switchboard SB-988/SRT, corresponds to a remote contro station. The designation of remote contro stations shoud, at the time of instaation, be engraved on the engraving strip, adjacent to the respective switch knob. (See Figure 3-2). 0 Page 4
( Rotary switch positions one through six corresponds to a transmitter contro circuit. The designation of the transmitter shoud, at the time of instaation, be engraved on the engraving pate in the order of switch position rotation. The X, or seventh, rotary position of each switch unit corresponds to an extension to additiona transmitter contro circuits and may be so engraved on the engraving pate at the time of instaation of additiona Radio Transmitter Transfer Switchboards, SB-988/SRT. Transmitter Transfer Switchboards SB-998/SRT are furnished with dia pates having rotary position numbers one through six. The pates are reversibe, having rotary position numbers seven through tweve on the reverse side. n instaations having two switchboards, mounted in horizonta reation, for the purpose of adding additiona transmitters seven through tweve, the dia pates shoud be reversed to obtain appropriate rotary position numbers on the second switchboard. SECTON 4 MANTENANCE 4.1 REPLACEMENT OF SWTCH WAFERS BE CERTAN ALL OPERATNG KNOBS ARE N THE "OFF" POSTON Lower front pane to a horizzonta position. Locate switch in which wafer is to be repaced and remove the singe screw hoding the wafer retaining pate (see Figure 3-3) and side the pate out. Using this cover pate, insert the two projecting tips into the two hoes provided in the wafer to be removed, and genty pry the wafer oose from its receptace.
