10 Chapter 1: Intrducing the SlarEdge Pwer Harvesting System The SlarEdge pwer harvesting slutin maximizes the pwer utput frm any type f slar Phtvltaic (PV) installatin while reducing the average cst per watt. The fllwing sectins describe each f the system s cmpnents. SlarEdge Pwer Optimizer The SlarEdge pwer ptimizers are DC-DC cnverters cnnected t PV mdules in rder t maximize pwer harvesting by perfrming independent Maximum Pwer Pint Tracking (MPPT) at the mdule level. The pwer ptimizers regulate the string vltage at a cnstant level, regardless f string length and envirnmental cnditins. The pwer ptimizers include a safety vltage functin that autmatically reduces the utput f each pwer ptimizer t 1 Vdc in the fllwing cases: During fault cnditins The pwer ptimizers are discnnected frm the inverter The inverter s ON/OFF switch is turned OFF The Safety Switch is turned OFF Inverter's AC breaker is turned OFF Each pwer ptimizer als transmits mdule perfrmance data ver the DC pwer line t the inverter. Tw types f pwer ptimizers are available: Mdule Add-n pwer ptimizer cnnected t ne r mre mdules Smart mdules - the pwer ptimizers are embedded int a mdule SlarEdge Inverter The SlarEdge inverter efficiently cnverts DC pwer frm the mdules int AC pwer that can be fed int the main AC service f the site and frm there t the grid. The inverter als receives the mnitring data frm each pwer ptimizer and transmits it t a central server (the SlarEdge mnitring prtal; requires Internet cnnectin). SlarEdge Mnitring Prtal Chapter 1: Intrducing the SlarEdge Pwer Harvesting System The SlarEdge mnitring prtal enables mnitring the technical and financial perfrmance f ne r mre SlarEdge sites. Refer t Cuntry and Grid n page 37.7 Nte that in sme cases L1 and L2 are nt interchangeable. In these places, L1 and L2 lcatins appear in the drawing. The fllwing is a recmmendatin f the equipment needed fr installatin: Allen screwdriver fr 5mm screw type fr the inverter cver and Safety Switch cver Allen screwdriver fr 5mm screw type fr the inverter side screw Standard flat-head screwdrivers set Nn-cntact vltage detectr Crdless drill r screwdriver and bits suitable fr the surface n which the inverter will be installed and fr pening the Safety Switch knckuts Suitable hardware fr attaching the inverter munting bracket t the surface t which it will be cnnected 1/4" r 5/16 stainless blts, nuts, and washers fr attaching the pwer ptimizer t the racking (nt required fr smart mdules) Wire cutters Wire strippers Vltmeter Fr installing the cmmunicatin ptins, yu may als need the fllwing: Fr Ethernet: Fr RS485: CAT5/6 twisted pair Ethernet cable with RJ45 cnnectr. If using a CAT5/6 cable spl: RJ45 plug and RJ45 crimper Fur- r six-wire shielded twisted pair cable. Watchmaker precisin screwdriver set Inverter Transprt and Strage Transprt the inverter in its riginal packaging, facing up and withut expsing it t unnecessary shcks. If the riginal package is n lnger available, use a similar bx that can withstand the weight f the inverter (refer t the inverter weight in the specificatin datasheet prvided with the unit), has a handle system and can be clsed fully. 13 Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Safety The fllwing ntes and warnings apply when installing the SlarEdge pwer ptimizers. Sme f the fllwing may nt be applicable t smart mdules: WARNING! The metallic enclsure f the pwer ptimizer must be grunded in accrdance with the requirements f the lcal and natinal cdes. When mdifying an existing installatin, turn OFF the inverter ON/OFF switch, the Safety Switch and the AC circuit breaker n the main AC distributin panel. Avant de faire ces étapes, éteignez l'nduleur mnphasé en mettant sur OFF l'interrupteur ON/OFF situé au bas de l'nduleur. WARNING! Input and utput cnnectrs are nt watertight until mated. Open cnnectrs shuld be mated t each ther r plugged with apprpriate watertight caps. Les cnnecteurs d entrée et srtie ne snt pas étanches jusqu'à ce qu ils sient accuplés. Les cnnecteurs divent être accuplés u fermés avec des terminaux étanches. CAUTION! Pwer ptimizers are IP65/NEMA4 rated. Chse a munting lcatin where ptimizers will nt be submerged in water. If yu intend t munt the ptimizers directly t the mdule r mdule frame, first cnsult the mdule manufacturer fr guidance regarding the munting lcatin and the impact, if any, n mdule warranty. Drilling hles in the mdule frame shuld be dne accrding t the mdule manufacturer instructins. Installing a SlarEdge system withut ensuring cmpatibility f the mdule cnnectrs with the ptimizer cnnectrs may be unsafe and culd cause functinality prblems such as grund faults, resulting in inverter shut dwn. In rder t ensure mechanical cmpatibility f the SlarEdge ptimizers and the mdules t which they are cnnected, use identical cnnectrs frm the same manufacturer and f the same type n bth the pwer ptimizers and n the mdules. Les cnnecteurs du mdule divent être mécaniquement cmpatibles avec les ptimiseurs de puissance. As lng as the pwer ptimizers are nt cnnected t the inverter r the inverter is turned OFF, each pwer ptimizer will utput a safe vltage f 1V. Package Cntents Pwer ptimizers Stainless steel grunding lck washers Installatin Guidelines The steps in this chapter refer t mdule add-n pwer ptimizers. Fr smart mdules, start frm Step 3: Cnnecting Pwer Optimizers in Strings n page 16. Als refer t the dcumentatin supplied with the smart mdules. The minimum and maximum string length guidelines are stated in the pwer ptimizer datasheets. If cnnecting mre mdules than ptimizer inputs in parallel, use a branch cable (available frm SlarEdge). Make sure t use ptimizers that have the required utput cable length. Yu can use extensin cables between rws and frm the end f string t the inverter. Extensin cables cannt be used between tw pwer ptimizers within a string. The pwer ptimizer can be placed in any rientatin. Psitin the pwer ptimizer clse enugh t its mdule s that their cables can be cnnected. T allw fr heat dissipatin, maintain a 2.5 cm/ 1" clearance distance between the pwer ptimizer and ther surfaces. Refer t the SlarEdge Site Designer fr string length verificatin. The SlarEdge Site Designer is available n the SlarEdge website at under Sftware Tls. Cmpletely shaded mdules may cause their pwer ptimizers t temprarily shut dwn. This will nt affect the perfrmance f the ther pwer ptimizers in the string, as lng as the minimum number f unshaded pwer ptimizers cnnected in a string f mdules is met. If under typical cnditins fewer than the minimum ptimizers are cnnected t unshaded mdules, add mre ptimizers t the string. D nt leave the pwer ptimizers cnnectrs discnnected. Open cnnectrs shuld be mated t each ther. Equipment grunding tightening trques: 4-6 AWG: 45 lb-in, 8 AWG: 40 lb-in, AWG: 35 lb-in. SlarEdge-HD-Wave Inverter Installatin Guide MAN

15 Step 1: Munting and Grunding the Pwer Optimizers NOTE The images cntained in the fllwing sectins are fr illustrative purpses nly and may vary depending n prduct mdels. Step 1: Munting and Grunding the Pwer Optimizers Fr each f the pwer ptimizers1: 1. Determine the pwer ptimizer munting lcatin and use the pwer ptimizer munting brackets t attach the pwer ptimizer t the supprt structure (See Figure 3). Fr frame-munted pwer ptimizers fllw the instructins supplied with the ptimizers. 2. If required, mark the munting hle lcatins and drill the hle. CAUTION! D nt drill thrugh the pwer ptimizer r thrugh the munting hles. The drilling vibratins can damage the pwer ptimizer and will vid the warranty. Use the fllwing methds t grund the pwer ptimizer2: WARNING! The metallic enclsure f the pwer ptimizer must be grunded in accrdance with the requirements f the lcal and natinal cdes. Fr munting n a grunded metal rail: Use the prvided 5/16'' stainless steel grunding star washer between the railing and the flat side f the munting bracket. The grunding washer shuld break thrugh the andize cating f the railing t ensure lw resistive cnnectin. Apply trque f 9.5 N*m / 7 lb*ft. The minimum and maximum string lengths are specified in the pwer ptimizer datasheets. Refer t the SlarEdge Site Designer fr string length verificatin. NOTE The ttal cable length f the string (excluding pwer ptimizers cables) shuld nt exceed 1000ft./300m frm DC+ t DC- f the inverter. Use at least 11 AWG/ 4 mm² DC cables. IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE Rapid shutdwn is applicable and functins nly when there are 30 ptimizers r less per string. 1. Step 4: Verifying Prper Pwer Optimizer Cnnectin After a mdule is cnnected t a pwer ptimizer, the pwer ptimizer utputs a safe vltage f 1V. Therefre, the ttal string vltage shuld be equal t 1V times the number f pwer ptimizers cnnected in series in the string. Fr example, if 10 pwer ptimizers are cnnected in a string, then 10V shuld be prduced. Make sure the mdules are expsed t sunlight during this prcess; therwise, the pwer ptimizers may nt be pwered. If yu use a tracker, the pwer ptimizer will turn ON nly if the tracker is tracking the sun and the mdule prvides at least 2W. In SlarEdge systems, due t the intrductin f pwer ptimizers between the PV mdules and the inverter, the shrt circuit current I SC and the pen circuit vltage V OC hld different meanings frm thse in traditinal systems. Fr mre infrmatin abut the SlarEdge system s string vltage and current, refer t the V OC and I SC in SlarEdge Systems Technical Nte, available n the SlarEdge website at: T verify prper pwer ptimizers cnnectin: Measure the vltage f each string individually befre cnnecting it t the ther strings r t the inverter. Verify crrect plarity by measuring the string plarity with a vltmeter. Use a vltmeter with at least 0.1V measurement accuracy. Turning it OFF reduces the pwer ptimizer vltage t a lw safety vltage and inhibits exprtatin f pwer. When this switch is OFF, the inverter cntrl circuitry remains pwered up. LCD buttns: Use d fr accessing cnfiguratin menu ptins and displaying status screens, as described in User Interface n page 33. 22 Chapter 3: Installing the Inverter NOTE Make sure the munting surface r structure can supprt the weight f the inverter. 1. Determine the inverter munting lcatin, n a wall, stud framing r ple. T allw prper heat dissipatin, maintain the fllwing minimum clearance areas between the inverter and ther bjects: If installing a single inverter: 8" (20 cm) t the tp f the inverter. At least 4" (10 cm) t the bttm f the inverter; if cnduit entry t the Safety Switch will be frm the bttm, leave sufficient clearance fr the cnduits as well. 4" (10 cm) t the right and left f the inverter. If installing multiple inverters: When installing inverters ne abve f the ther, leave at least 8" (20 cm) between inverters. 2. The inverter brackets are attached t the designated heatsink fins ready fr wall munting. Fr installatin n a ple, remve the tw brackets and attach them t the central heatsink fin ne belw the ther (d nt ver tighten s the bracket height can be adjusted). Psitin the wall munting brackets against the wall/ple and mark the drilling hle lcatins (refer t Mechanical Specificatins n page 63 fr inverter and munting bracket dimensins). 4. D nt lift hlding the Safety Switch as it may be damaged. Lwer the inverter s that the ntches n the inverter brackets are inserted in the hles f the wall brackets, as shwn belw. Optinally, secure the Safety Switch bracket t the wall: Mark the lcatin f the bracket screw fr the Safety Switch and drill the hle. Fasten the bracket using a standard blt. 24 Chapter 4: Cnnecting the AC and the Strings t the Safety Switch The Safety Switch discnnects all ungrunded DC cnductrs f the circuit t which it is cnnected in cmpliance with the Natinal Electric Cde, and specifically NEC690.35, which addresses ungrunded PV arrays. The Safety Switch is rated t the maximum perating cnditins f the inverter. The fllwing figure illustrates the Safety Switch. Chapter 4: Cnnecting the AC and the Strings t the Safety Switch Figure 15: Inside the Safety Switch Grid Cnnectin Guidelines In single phase inverters cnnected t crner grunded grids, cnnect the L2 terminal t the grunded cnductr. When cnnecting t ther grids, L1 and L2 are interchangeable. Equipment grunding tightening trques: 4-6 AWG: 45 lb-in, 8 AWG: 40 lb-in, AWG: 35 lb-in. NOTE The cnduits, hubs and fittings must be suited fr field wiring systems. Use nly cpper cnductrs rated fr a minimum f 75 C. The hubs and ther fittings must cmply with UL514B. Use the cnduit and wiring apprpriate fr the installatin lcatin per the NEC. Outdr installatins must use cmpnents that are rated NEMA 3R r higher. Fr mre wiring infrmatin refer t the SlarEdge Recmmended AC Wiring Applicatin Nte, available n the SlarEdge website at Cnnecting the AC Grid t the Safety Switch 1. Remve the spring-clamp terminal instructins frm inside the switch. 2. Strip 05 16'' (8mm) f the AC wire insulatin. 3. Insert the AC cnduit int the AC-side knckut that was pened. 25 Cnnecting the Strings t the Safety Switch NOTE Cnnect the equipment grunding befre cnnecting the AC wires t the AC terminal blck. Figure 16: AC and DC Spring-clamp terminals Cnnecting the Strings t the Safety Switch Strings may be cnnected in parallel t the tw DC input pairs f the switch. If mre than tw strings are required, they can be cnnected in parallel using an external cmbiner bx befre cnnecting t the switch. When cnnecting multiple strings, it is recmmended t run separate circuits t the Safety Switch r t psitin the cmbiner bx near the switch. This simplifies cmmissining by allwing testing and servicing near the inverter. T cnnect the strings t the safety switch: 1. Strip 5 16'' (8 mm) f the DC wire insulatin. 2. Insert the DC cnduit int ne f the DC-side glands n the Safety Switch (left side r the left gland at the bttm f the Safety Switch). 3. Equipment grunding: Cnnect the DC equipment grund cnductr t the equipment grunding terminal blck in the Safety Switch. NOTE Functinal Electrical Earthing f DC-side negative r psitive is prhibited because the inverter has n transfrmer. Earthing f mdule frames and munting equipment (equiptential bnding) is required per NEC. 4. Cnnect the DC wires frm the PV installatin t the DC+ and DC- terminal blcks, accrding t the labels n the terminals: 24 SlarEdge HD-Wave Inverter Installatin Guide MAN

Ensure that the Plus (+) wire is cnnected t the + terminal and that the Minus (-) wire is cnnected t the Minus (-) terminal cnnectr. Step 1: Activating the System 1. Verify that the inverter ON/OFF switch is OFF. 2. Mve the Safety Switch t the ON psitin. 3. If nt already remved, remve the inverter cver: Open the inverter cver s six Allen screws and carefully pull the cver hrizntally befre lwering it. WARNING! ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. If an additinal external DC switch is installed between the pwer ptimizers and the inverter(s) then turn it ON. Verify that the fllwing infrmatin appears n the LCD panel: P_OK: Appears nly upn pairing prcess cmpletin and first telemetry receptin frm the pwer ptimizers. Indicates cnnectin t the pwer ptimizers and that at least ne pwer ptimizer is sending mnitring data. If P_OK des nt appear, check the pwer ptimizer, string and DC input cnnectins. 000/000: Appears nly upn first telemetry receptin frm the pwer ptimizers. Indicates the number f pwer ptimizers that have been paired t this inverter. At this stage, the number shuld be 000, since n pwer ptimizers have been paired. S_OK: the cnnectin t the SlarEdge mnitring prtal is successful (shuld appear nly if the inverter is cnnected t the server). If S_OK is nt displayed and the inverter is cnnected t the server, refer t Errrs and Trubleshting n page 56. Vac [V]: the grid AC utput vltage. Verify the crrect value. Vdc [V]: The DC input vltage f the lngest string cnnected t the inverter. There shuld be a safety vltage f 1V fr each pwer ptimizer in the string. NOTE A measurement errr n the inverter LCD f ±3 V is acceptable. Pac [w]: the AC utput pwer (shuld be 0.0 since the inverter is OFF). OFF: the inverter ON/OFF switch is in the OFF psitin. 29 Step 2: Pairing Pwer Optimizers t the Inverter Step 2: Pairing Pwer Optimizers t the Inverter Once all cnnectins are made, all the pwer ptimizers must be lgically paired t their inverter. The pwer ptimizers d nt start prducing pwer until they are paired with an inverter. This step describes hw t assign each inverter t the pwer ptimizers frm which it will prduce pwer. Perfrm this step when the mdules are expsed t sunlight. If the string length is changed r a pwer ptimizer is replaced, repeat the pairing prcess. 1. Perfrm pairing: Press and hld dwn the inverter LCD OK buttn (rightmst n the cmmunicatin bard; see Figure 18) fr abut 10 secnds. The fllwing message is displayed: K e e p h l d i n g b u t t n f r p a i r i n g, r e l e a s e t e n t e r m e n u... R e m a i n i n g : 3 s e c Keep hlding fr 5 secnds until the fllwing is displayed: P a i r i n g T u r n S w i t c h T O n 2. Turn the inverter ON/OFF switch t ON within 5 secnds. If yu wait lnger than 5 secnds the inverter exits the pairing mde. The fllwing message is displayed indicating that the inverter is perfrming the pairing: P a i r i n g R e m a i n i n g [ s e c ] : Wait fr the cmpletin f the pairing (remaining secnds is 0). If pairing fails, an errr is displayed. In this case, repeat the pairing steps, and refer t Pwer Optimizer Trubleshting n page 62. If the prblem persists, cntact SlarEdge Supprt. When pairing succeeds, the fllwing message is displayed: P a i r i n g P a i r i n g C m p l e t e d 4. Upn pairing cmpletin, the inverter cntinues with assigning numbers t the pwer ptimizers and mapping them int strings: Pwer ptimizer detectin - the pwer ptimizer IDs are detected and each ptimizer is assigned a unique number, which is later used by the inverter fr synchrnizing telemetries. This detectin is perfrmed while the ptimizers are in safe vltage. String detectin - During this prcedure the lgical string f each ptimizer is detected. This detectin is perfrmed while sme ptimizers are set t MaxVut mde. The detectin and assignment f pwer ptimizers may take up t 2 minutes. 30 Chapter 5: Cmmissining the Installatin WARNING! When yu turn ON the inverter ON/OFF switch, the DC cables carry a high vltage and the pwer ptimizers n lnger utput a safe 1V utput. The fllwing message is displayed: W a k i n g U p... R e m a i n i n g : S e c The cuntdwn indicates the secnds remaining until entering the Prductin mde. This time is in accrdance with lcal regulatins and is typically between three t five minutes. When cuntdwn is cmplete, the inverter enters Prductin mde and prduces pwer. The steadily lit green inverter LED indicates this mde. 5. Enable Rapid Shutdwn: a. Enter Setup mde as described in Inverter Cnfiguratin Setup Mde n page 34. b. Verify the fllwing: The green inverter LED is steadily lit. The ON/OFF indicatr n the LCD panel reads ON. P_OK: XXX/YYY: There is a cnnectin t the pwer ptimizers and at least ne pwer ptimizer is sending mnitring data. Optimizers send telemetries in a frequency f up t 10 minutes. S_OK appears, if the inverter is cnnected t the SlarEdge mnitring prtal. Vac [V] specifies the measured grid AC utput vltage. Vdc [v] : Specifies the DC input vltage, which shuld equal the sum f the utput vltages f all mdules (and shuld be within the perating range f the inverter). Pac [W] specifies the AC utput pwer prduced. 2. Take nte f the serial # n the inverter label using the detachable 2D barcde sticker n each device. This infrmatin is used in the SlarEdge mnitring prtal t identify this inverter and is needed t pen a new site in the mnitring prtal. Yur SlarEdge pwer harvesting system is nw peratinal. Step 4: Reprting and Mnitring Installatin Data NOTE This step requires cnnecting ne f the cmmunicatin ptins. Refer t Setting Up Cmmunicatin n page 47. The SlarEdge Mnitring System The SlarEdge clud-based mnitring platfrm (mnitring prtal) enables accessing SlarEdge site infrmatin, including up-t-date infrmatin viewed in a physical r lgical view. The mnitring prtal is described in detail in the SlarEdge Mnitring Prtal User Guide, available n the SlarEdge website at The SlarEdge mnitring prtal can display lgical and physical layuts f the installed system, as fllws: Lgical Layut: Shws a schematic lgical layut f the cmpnents in the system, such as: inverters, strings and mdules, as well as their electrical cnnectivity. The infrmatin is sent frm the inverter t the SlarEdge mnitring prtal thrugh the Internet. In rder t send the data frm the inverter, a cmmunicatin cnnectin must be set up, as described in this chapter. Cmmunicatin setup is nt required fr pwer harvesting, hwever is needed fr using the SlarEdge mnitring prtal. This chapter describes setting up cmmunicatin between multiple inverters fr a master/slave cnfiguratin. CAUTION! When cnnecting the cmmunicatin cables, make sure that the ON/OFF switch at the bttm f the inverter is turned OFF, and the AC is turned OFF. 65 Appendix C: Inverter Arc Detectin and Interruptin Appendix C: Inverter Arc Detectin and Interruptin An electric arc is an nging high-energy discharge, resulting frm a current thrugh a nrmally nncnductive material such as air. When cnnecters r cables in a PV system are imprperly cnnected r are damaged, the electric current may pass thrugh the air, causing an electric arc. Arcs generate heat which can cause fires and they als pse an electrcutin risk t thse wrking near them. SlarEdge inverters can detect arcs and interrupt prductin. A qualified persn must re-enable the inverter after prperly checking the installatin. The arc detectin ptin is disabled by default. It must be enabled when UL1699B cmpliance is required. T enable/disable arc detectin: 1. Enter Setup mde and scrll t the Maintenance menu. 2. Select AFCI è Enable r Disable. T manually test the arc detectin functinality: 1. Make sure the inverter ON/OFF switch is turned ON. 2. Use the LCD light buttn t select Maintenance è Manual AFCI Test. If yu cannt see the inverter panel, r if a malfunctin is indicated n the LCD panel, wait five minutes fr the input capacitrs f the inverter t discharge.
