Chapter 1: Intrductin Chapter 1: Intrductin Terminlgy The fllwing terms are used in this dcument: Exprt: The pwer injected t the grid. Imprt: The pwer purchased frm the grid. Exprt/ Imprt meter: A meter that is installed at the grid cnnectin pint and reads the energy/pwer exprted/imprted t/frm the grid. Cnsumptin: The pwer cnsumed by the site. Cnsumptin meter: A meter that is installed at the lad cnsumptin pint and reads the energy/pwer cnsumed by the site. Self-cnsumptin: The PV pwer cnsumed by the site and nt fed int the grid. Prductin: The PV pwer prduced by the PV system. Prductin meter: A meter that is installed at the inverter utput and reads the energy/pwer prduced by the PV system. Figure 1: Terminlgy 6
The SlarEdge Mdbus Meter The SlarEdge meter enables measuring the pwer and energy f the phtvltaic (PV) system. The meter is used by the inverter fr the fllwing applicatins: Cnsumptin mnitring Exprt limitatin StrEdge Smart Energy Management n-grid applicatins Chapter 1: Intrductin The SlarEdge inverter r the Cntrl and Cmmunicatin Gateway (CCG) reads the exprted pwer frm a meter installed at the grid cnnectin pint r reads the cnsumptin frm a meter installed at the lad cnsumptin pint. Figure 2: Typical installatin with exprt meter Figure 3: Typical installatin with cnsumptin meter 7
Meter Cnnectin Optins Chapter 1: Intrductin In a single inverter system, the meter is cnnected directly t the inverter. Figure 4: Single-inverter 1 cnnectin In a multiple inverter system, tw ptins are available: The meter is cnnected t the RS485 prt f ne f the inverters. In this case, as the inverter's RS485 prt is ccupied by the meter, use an RS485 Expansin Kit (available frm SlarEdge) r ZigBee cmmunicatin between the inverters. The meter is cnnected t ne f the RS485 prts f a CCG. The CCG s secnd RS485 prt can be used t create an RS485 bus fr cmmunicatin between the inverters. This ptin is illustrated in Figure 5. Figure 5: Multi-inverter cnnectin with CCG and meter 1 This figure shws a single phase inverter cnnectin. Fr three phase inverters, 3 CTs are required. 8
Chapter 2: Meter Installatin The meter is cnnected t the inverter using RS485. Installatin Guidelines AC wire specificatins: 1.3 t 2.0 mm diameter / AWG stranded wire, 600 V, type THHN, MTW, r THWN. RS485 wiring specificatins: Cable type: Min. 3-wire shielded twisted pair (a 4-wire cable may be used) Wire crss-sectin area: mm²/ AWG (a CAT5 cable may be used) NOTE If using a cable lnger than 10 m/33 ft in areas where there is a risk f induced vltage surges by lightning, it is recmmend t use external surge prtectin devices. Fr details refer t External Lightning Prtectin Cnnectin n page 40. If grunded metal cnduit are used fr ruting the cmmunicatin wires, there is n need fr a lightning prtectin device. The meter is cnsidered permanently cnnected equipment and requires a discnnect means (circuit breaker, switch, r discnnect) and vercurrent prtectin (fuse r circuit breaker). The meter draws 10-30mA, therefre the rating f any switches, discnnects, fuses, and/ r circuit breakers is determined by the wire gauge, the mains vltage, and the current interrupting rating required. The switch, discnnect, r circuit breaker must be lcated near the meter and be easily perated. Use circuit breakers r fuses rated fr 20A r less. Chapter 2: Meter Installatin Use gruped circuit breakers when mnitring mre than ne line. 9
The circuit breakers r fuses must prtect the mains terminals labeled L1, L2, and L3. In the rare cases where neutral has vercurrent prtectin, the vercurrent prtectin device must interrupt bth neutral and the ungrunded cnductrs simultaneusly. The circuit prtectin / discnnect system must meet IEC and IEC , as well as all natinal and lcal electrical cdes. Installing and Cnnecting the Meter Munt the meter either directly n a flat surface, r n a DIN rail using the DIN-rail clips supplied with the meter. T munt the meter directly n a surface: 1. Carefully remve the terminal blcks n bth sides f the meter. 2. Use the tw munting hles n bth sides f the meter t mark the hle psitins. NOTE Chapter 2: Meter Installatin D nt use the meter as a drilling guide; the drill may damage the screw terminals and metal shavings may fall int the cnnectrs. 3. Use the supplied screws t munt the meter. D nt ver-tighten the screws, as lng-term stress n the case can cause cracking. Figure 6: Meter munting hles 10
T munt n a DIN rail using clips: Chapter 2: Meter Installatin The supplied kit includes tw DIN-rail munting-clips and tw screws. 1. Carefully remve the terminal blcks frm bth sides f the meter. 2. Attach the DIN rail clips t the meter and fasten them using the supplied screws (trque 0.7 N*m/0.4 lb*ft). Make sure that the clips are crrectly riented, as shwn belw. Figure 7: Munting the meter n a DIN-rail T install the CTs: 1. Turn ff AC pwer befre clamping n current transfrmers. 2. Install the CTs arund the cnductr t be measured. Split-cre CTs can be pened fr installatin arund a cnductr. A nyln cable tie may be secured arund the CT t prevent accidental pening. 3. Install the CTs with the arrws pinting t the grid fr cnsumptin r exprt measurement. 11

Fr RS485 cmmunicatin lines, the selected vltage rating is typically 6-8 V. Transient suppressrs shuld be installed as clse as pssible t the prt that is being prtected, and the user must prvide an extremely lw impedance cnnectin t the lcal earth grund f the SlarEdge device. This grund cnnectin is crucial fr prper suppressin device peratin. The grund cnnectin shuld be made using a heavy gauge wire and kept as shrt as pssible. If the cable between the SlarEdge device and the prtectin device must be lnger than 1m/ 3.3 ft., a cpper strap r a braided cable intended fr grunding purpses must be used fr the prtectin device t be effective. In additin t the high frequency nature f transients, extremely high current may flw. A prtective device with surge discharge ratings f In: 10kA 8/20μs and Imax: 20kA 8/20μs is recmmended. Varius lightning prtectin devices are available fr RS485 cmmunicatin lines. The diagram belw shws a cnnectin example using the ISKRA ZAŠČITE VM-RS 485 data prtcl prtectin device.
