3 KEPCO THE POWER SUPPLIER INSTRUCTION MANUAL CORRECTION KEPCO MODELS: BOP 100W, BOP 200W, BOP 400W LOAD REACTANCE, PARAGRAPH 1-10D, add the fllwing: There are tw means f eliminating scillatin in the current lp perating with mderate inductive lads and mderate vltage and current: 1. Add capacitance in parallel with the utput (inductive lad). The value f capacitr can be frm 0.1 uf t 1.0 uf depending n the value f the lad inductance. 2. Add a series-cnnected resistr capacitr netwrk in parallel with the utput (inductive lad). The value f resistr shuld be in the range f 100 t 500 Ohms and the value f capacitr shuld be 0.1 uf t 0.5 uf, depending n the lad inductance value. Bth ptins are recmmended when the BOP is used with very lw frequency utput int inductive lads. NOTE:BOP 200W and 400W units may be cnverted t ML units in rder t eliminate scillatin when dealing with a large range f inductive lad values. This upgrade must be accmplished at the Kepc factry in Flushing New Yrk and includes cmpnent changes and re-calibratin f the unit. Please cntact Kepc Sales fr price and delivery schedule regarding this upgrade. When driving heavy inductive lads with high currents, it is pssible fr the BOP and the lad t be damaged by an A-C input pwer lss which prevents the lad's stred energy frm being dissipated inside the BOP. T avid pssible damage bserve the fllwing: Use UPS t supply the BOP. Set BOP utput current and/r vltage t zer and turn ff the BOP after the utput current actually reaches a zer value. Use prperly rated (vltage and current) biplar transrbs r a prperly rated biplar crwbar element cnnected directly at the utput f the BOP. 4 AFTER PAR. 3-3 B) LOAD CONNECTION (I) and PAR. 3-3 C) LOAD CONNECTION (II) add the fllwing: Lad cnnectins t the BOP pwer supply are achieved via the OUTPUT and COMMON terminals lcated n either the frnt r the rear panel, but nt bth. Sense cnnectins must be made frm the same lcatin (frnt r rear panel) as the utput and cmmn cnnectins. AFTER PAR. 3-3 D) A-C GROUND add the fllwing: The GROUND terminal is cnnected t CHASSIS f the unit and t the lcal EARTH-GROUND ptential thrugh the A-C pwer line crd. It can be used a) as a mnitring reference pint, b) as a grunding pint fr the utput f the unit, and c) fr dubling the a-c pwer crd EARTH- GROUND cnnectin if necessary by prviding a separate cnnectin t the lcal EARTH- GROUND pint. CAUTION: NEVER CONNECT THE BOP OUTPUT TERMINAL (OR THE LOAD TERMINAL TIED TO THE OUTPUT TERMINAL) TO EARTH-GROUND. OTHERWISE, IF THE CONTROLLING DEVICE IS GROUNDED, THE BOP CAN BE DAMAGED BY THE OUTPUT LIMIT CUR- RENT FLOWING INSIDE THE BOP ALONG THE PROGRAMMING SIGNAL RETURN PATH. CAUTION: DO NOT CONNECT BOTH THE LOAD AND THE PROGRAMMING DEVICE RETURN (COMMON) TO EARTH-GROUND POTENTIAL AND DO NOT USE THE PROGRAMMING RETURN TERMINAL AS A TAP POINT FOR THE LOAD RETURN. OTHERWISE, IF THE COMMON POWER CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BOP AND THE LOAD IS LOST, THE BOP CAN BE DAMAGED BY OUTPUT CURRENT FLOWING INSIDE THE BOP ALONG THE PROGRAMMING SIGNAL RETURN PATH. CAUTION: DO NOT USE THE PROGRAMMING RETURN TERMINAL AS A TAP POINT FOR THE LOAD RETURN BECAUSE THE BOP CAN BE DAMAGED BY OUTPUT CURRENT FLOWING INSIDE THE BOP ALONG THE PROGRAMMING SIGNAL RETURN PATH. AFTER PAR. 3-3 E) D-C (SIGNAL) GROUND add the fllwing: The GROUNDING NETWORK terminal is tied t GROUND (CHASSIS) terminal thrugh a series capacitr-resistr netwrk. Cnnecting the GROUNDING NETWORK terminal t the COMMON terminal reduces cmmn nise current flwing thrugh the lad and, if a BIT card is installed, it ensures that the dynamic swing f the utput des nt affect the digital sectin. AFTER PAR. 3-3 J) EXTERNAL LEADS add the fllwing: K) EXTERNAL VOLTAGE MONITOR. Use signal E O Mnitr Output at pin 20 f the PC12 prgramming cnnectr (see Figure 4-5) fr external vltage mnitring. Cautin shuld be exercised in handling this signal: use a series 5K resistr in cmbinatin with a high impedance mnitring device, r an external high impedance buffer between the BOP and the mnitring device. This signal is buffered by OPAMP IC23 (see Figure 6-4) which functins as a repeater fr the signal cming frm the RN3 matched pair divider cnnected at the utput. There is n vervltage prtectin. This stage is prtected against shrt-circuit by the intrinsic prtectin f the OPAMP generating this signal. This signal is used by the BIT card if it is installed. 2

5 L) EXTERNAL CURRENT MONITOR. Use signal I O Sensing Output at pin 10 f the PC12 prgramming cnnectr (see Figure 4-5) fr external current mnitring. This signal is nt buffered. Use a series 5K resistr in cmbinatin with a high impedance mnitring device, r an external high impedance buffer between the BOP and the mnitring device. CAUTION: An accidental shrt-circuit at this terminal while the unit is in Current mde r Current limit mde will damage the BOP pwer stage. There is n vervltage prtectin. This stage is prtected against shrt-circuit by the intrinsic prtectin f the OPAMP generating this signal. This signal is used by the BIT card if it is installed. DIGITAL CONTROL OF BOP POWER SUPPLIES, PARAGRAPH 3-46 add the fllwing: The SN and SNR Prgrammers and the BIT 488 cards described in this manual are lder methds f cntrlling BOP pwer supplies via digital means. Althugh these prducts still functin as described, the recmmended methd f digital cntrl is nw the use f Kepc s BIT bit plug-in card with reslutin f 1/2 16. This plug-in card prvides talk-listen supprt fr the IEEE bus using SCPI cmmands. The BIT 4886 card allws a BOP t cmmunicate as a stand-alne instrument, directly n the GPIB. The BIT 4886 card als allws the BOP t be prgrammed ver the RS232C bus using either SCPI r CIIL cmmands via either an RS232-C terminal, r frm a PC using a terminal emulatin prgram with a baud rate f 9600, n parity, eight data bits and ne stp bit. The dwnladable BIT 4886 driver supprts digital calibratin (n manual pts) and multiple cntrl and read-back ranges, Fr mre infrmatin refer t: PERIODIC MAINTENANCE, PARAGRAPH 5-6, add the fllwing: T clean the unit, prceed as fllws: 1. Discnnect the unit frm mains pwer. 2. Using a damp, lint-free clth, wipe the exterir f the unit t remve accumulated dirt. 3. Recnnect AC pwer t the unit. MASTER/SLAVE PARALLEL CONNECTIONS, PARAGRAPH 3-44, add the fllwing: Fr tw r mre tw parallel units, refer t Figure 3-27A, belw. This cnfiguratin is mre stable and accurate than the simple cnfiguratin shwn in Figure 3-27; it eliminates the parasitic vltage drp n the COM cnnectin f the slaves. 3

8 Cnditins f Cnfrmance When this prduct is used in applicatins gverned by the requirements f the EEC, the fllwing restrictins and cnditins apply: 1. Fr Eurpean applicatins, requiring cmpliance t the Lw Vltage Directive, 73/23/EEC, this pwer supply is cnsidered a cmpnent prduct, designed fr "built in applicatins.
