3 INITIAL INSPECTION Inspect all shipping cntainers fr damage as sn as the device arrives. It is yur respnsibility, the recipient, t ntify the freight cmpany f any damage. The freight cmpany will require yu t prvide the cntainer that any gds were shipped in, all shipping dcumentatin and a list f all damages. Phtgraphs f the damage are helpful in settling a freight claim. D nt return damaged gds t the factry withut a Return Material Authrizatin Number (RMA number). Althugh it is Laser Mechanisms, Inc. s intent t insure yu are up and running as sn as pssible, damage incurred during shipment must be settled with the freight cmpany befre arranging fr repairs r replacement. N return shipments will be accepted withut an RMA number clearly printed n the utside f all shipping cntainers. Failure t fllw this prcedure culd vid any warranty cverage n yur head. Call yur sales engineer at Laser Mechanisms, Inc. fr a RMA number. Carefully remve the device frm its shipping cntainer and all packing material t avid damage. Save all packaging material, including the sealed, padded pelican case, in the event the head requires shipping r strage. 5 1 Intrductin The Laser Mechanisms cver glass mnitr is a device fr mnitring the status f yur cver glass. It cnsists f: Cntrl bx One r tw cver glass hlders ( drawers ) Cnnecting cables Cmputer sftware fr mnitring the status and cnfiguring the cver glass mnitr The mst frequent applicatin f the cver glass mnitr is welding (see Figure 2 and Figure 3), but it can als be used in cutting applicatins. See Figure 1. 6 1.1 Cntrl Bx The cntrl bx is the central interface fr the cver glass mnitr. There are several cnnectins n the cntrl bx: A terminal blck fr pwer frm yur 24V DC surce A cnnectin pint fr the cable(s) that cnnect the cntrl bx t the cver glass hlder(s) A terminal blck fr cnnecting t the digital I/O f yur machine A USB prt fr cnnecting t the cmputer running the Cver Glass Mnitr Sftware 1.2 Cver Glass Hlder The cver glass hlder cntains the detectrs used t mnitr the cver glass. It als prvides an easy methd f changing the cver glass withut having t use tls. 1.3 Cver Glass Mnitr Sftware The cver glass mnitr sftware, laded n yur cmputer, is nly needed t: check the status f the cver glass cnfigure the cntrl bx. 7 2 Installatin 2.1 Install the Cver Glass Mnitr Sftware In rder t perate the cver glass mnitr, the sftware must be dwnladed nt a custmer supplied a Windws based cmputer. The current sftware can be dwnladed frm the web at: Cnnect the Cver Glass Mnitr Cables In rder t perate the cver glass mnitr, it must be cnnected t the cntrl bx (PLCSA0042). See Figure Insert the male 4 pin cnnectr frm the cnnecting cable attached t the cver glass hlder int the cnnectin n the cntrl bx labeled Input A. Tighten the fastening nut. It is pssible t mnitr tw cver glasses simultaneusly. 2. If applicable, insert the secnd male 4 pin cnnectr frm the cnnecting cable attached t the secnd cver glass hlder int the cnnectr n the cntrl bx labeled Input B. Tighten the fastening nut. 3. Insert the USB cable int the cnnectr n the cntrl bx labeled USB. The ther end is cnnected t the user supplied cmputer. 4. Cnnectins t yur system are made thrugh the 12 psitin terminal blck n the cnnectr bx. There are 3 inputs and 6 utputs. Each can be cnfigured as sinking r surcing. The lgic assciated with each utput can be based n the cver glass sensrs and the status f the three inputs. Cnfiguring the lgic is dne using the cver glass mnitr sftware. 5. Cnnect the user-supplied, 24V DC pwer surce t the three psitin terminal blck n the cntrl bx labeled POWER. If the system is cnnected and is nt recgnized, install the driver (Freescale Virtual Cm Prt, lcated in the same flder as the sftware) using the fllwing: Administratr rights t yur cmputer are required t cmplete the driver installatin. 1. Navigate t the device manager. The display is a list f all the devices installed. 2. Right-click n COVER GLASS MONITOR and select Update Driver Sftware 3. Click n Brwse my cmputer fr driver sftware. 4. Click n the Brwse buttn. 5. Lcate and pen the flder cntaining the Cver Glass Mnitr sftware, click n the Driver flder, and then click OK. 6. Click n the Next buttn. 7. A security message may appear warning that Windws can t verify the publisher f this driver sftware. If this happens, click n Install this driver sftware anyway. 8. The driver shuld nw install. Once it has cmpleted, click Clse. 9. Lk under the Prts (COM & LPT) categry in the device list. Yu shuld nw see Virtual Cm Prt fllwed by a COM number in parenthesis. 10 3 Quick Set-Up Guide 1. Make all f the cnnectins t the cver glass mnitr cntrl bx (See Sectin 2.2 fr mre details): a. Cnnect the cnnecting cable(s) between the cver glass hlder(s) and the cntrl bx. b. Cnnect the USB cable between yur cmputer and the cntrl bx. c. Cnnect the discrete inputs and utputs frm the 12-psitin terminal blck f the cntrl bx t yur system. d. Cnnect a 24 VDC pwer supply t the 3-psitin terminal blck f the cntrl bx. 2. Prepare the cmputer: a. Dwnlad CverGlassMnitr frm the website: b. Install the driver, which is included with the dwnladed sftware. See Sectin 2.3 fr mre details. c. Open the CverGlassMnitr applicatin. d. T cnnect t the cver glass mnitr, click n the prt drp dwn menu and chse the apprpriate prt. Fr steps 3-5, see Sectin 4.3 fr mre details: 3. Cnfigure the cver glass mnitr: a. T unlck the settings, click n the Lck/Unlck buttn and enter the passwrd lmdetectr b. Label the inputs and utputs based n yur system s requirements. c. T cnfigure the utput assciated with each utput, click n the utput number. Then, add elements t r remve elements frm the lgic chain by clicking the checkbx fr the element. d. T enable the cver glass hlders, pen the settings menu and click n Enable Cver Glass A and/r Enable Cver Glass B. 4. Set the detectr levels fr present and dirty: a. T set the present threshld: Insert a cver glass int the hlder. Recrd the detectr reading. Multiply the reading by 0.9 (t subtract 10%). In the Settings menu, chse Set Cver Glass A r B, and click Threshld Present. Then enter the value calculated in the previus step. Repeat steps 4a, if needed, fr an additinal cver glass hlder. b. T set the dirty threshld: The detectr is affected by differing laser pwer. Use the chart belw as a reference: Pwer (W) Setting > In the Settings menu, chse Set Cver Glass A r B, and click Dirty Threshld. Then enter the value frm the chart abve. Repeat Step 4b, if needed, fr an additinal cver glass hlder. Yur system may require a different dirty threshld setting. 11 5. Set the maximum temperature limits: a. In the Settings menu, chse Set Cver Glass A r B, and click Maximum Temperature. Enter the desired maximum temperature. The default setting is 50 C. b. Repeat Step 5b, if needed, fr an additinal cver glass hlder. If the system uses tw cver glasses, yu can als set the maximum temperature difference between them. c. T set the temperature difference: In the Settings menu, click n Set Temperature Difference Limit. Then enter the desired value. The default setting is 5 C. 12 4 Operatin 4.1 Getting Started 1. Verify the cver glass mnitr sftware is installed n a custmer supplied a Windws based cmputer. If it is nt see Sectin Verify that all f the cables are cnnected prperly. See Sectin Verify the cver glass mnitr driver is installed n a custmer supplied a Windws based cmputer. If it is nt see Sectin Duble click the Cver Glass Mnitr icn t start the sftware. 5. Chse the applicable prt frm the drp dwn menu. See Figure 6. If the applicable prt is nt n the drp dwn list, see Sectin 2.3. The Cver Glass Mnitr uses a temperature sensr and pht detectr in each drawer t determine the cnditin f the cver glass. A clred scale signals whether the value is in the acceptable range. Green represents values safely within the acceptable range. Red represents values that are nt within the acceptable range. Each thermmeter mnitrs and displays the current measured temperature. The display als shws the upper and lwer limits. Each detectr mnitrs and displays the current measured value. The display als shws the Present and Dirty threshlds. The present threshld represents the lwer limit f acceptable reflectin detected. See Sectin fr calculating the present threshld fr yur applicatin. The dirty threshld represents the upper limit f acceptable reflectin detected. See Sectin fr calculating the dirty threshld fr yur applicatin. 4.2 Start-Up Screen Once the cver glass mnitr is cnnected, the startup screen appears (see Figure 6): Figure 6 The File drp dwn allws the chice t exit the prgram. 13 The Settings drp dwn allws access t cntrl the cver glass mnitr settings. See Sectin 4.3 fr mre details. See Figure 7. The Discnnect buttn allws discnnectin frm the selected USB prt. Cnnected inputs and utputs (ON cnditin) are represented by a green status light n the cntrl bx. The Lck/Unlck buttn allws access t cntrl f all settings. Detectr A senses the presence and quality f the first cver glass t be mnitred. Temp. A displays the temperature f the first cver glass t be mnitred. The fllwing items are nly displayed if a secnd cver glass mnitr is enabled. Difference displays the variatin between the temperatures f the tw cver glasses t be mnitred. Temp. B displays the temperature f the secnd cver glass t be mnitred. Detectr B senses the presence and quality f the secnd cver glass t be mnitred. 4.3 Settings Settings are stred in the cntrl bx, allwing the cver glass mnitr t perate withut a cmputer. Hwever, the settings can be saved n the cmputer. Saved settings can be laded frm yur cmputer. T lad previusly saved settings: Click n the Settings drp dwn Chse Lad Settings Navigate t and chse the predefined setting file. T save settings t yur cmputer: Click n the Settings drp dwn Chse Save Settings Navigate t and chse a place t save the setting file. The cver glass hlder(s) can be enabled r disabled frm the Settings drp dwn. See Figure 7. T enable r disable a mnitr: 1. Click n the Settings drp dwn 2. Chse Disable/Enable Cver Glass A and/r Disable/Enable Cver Glass B, as necessary. The checkmarks in Figure 7 indicate that the cver glass mnitrs are already enabled. The settings must be unlcked prir t making any changes. In rder t unlck the settings d ne f the fllwing: 1. Click n the Settings menu and chse Unlck Settings. See Figure 7. OR 2. 14 See Figure 8. Nw, any f the settings enclsed in a bx can be mdified. Nte that the Lck/Unlck buttn is nw unlcked. The chices that appear are Present Threshld, Dirty Threshld, Maximum Temperature, and Use Defaults Click n the desired setting t change. See Figure Click n the Settings drp dwn. See Figure 7. Chse Set Temperature Difference Limit. After chsing the setting t mdify, a pp-up similar t Figure 10 will appear. It will include the fllwing: A field t enter the new setting value The current setting value The pssible range f setting values OK buttn t cnfirm the new setting value Cancel buttn t exit the change setting pp-up bx. 15 Input and utput names can als be mdified. Names can include letters, numbers and spaces. If necessary, unlck the settings accrding t step 3 f this sectin. If necessary, enter the passwrd accrding t step 4 f this sectin. Click n the name f the desired input r utput. Mdify the name as desired. Input names may be up t 9 characters Output names may be up t 10 characters. T determine a dirty threshld: 1. Find yur laser pwer n the hrizntal axis f the graph in Figure 11. The red slid (upper) line n the graph represents a dirty cver glass. The green dashed (lwer) line n the graph represents a clean cver glass. 2. Fllw the pwer value vertically t a lcatin between the green and red lines. 3. Nte the reading value n the vertical axis that crrespnds t that lcatin. This reading value is a reasnable apprximate dirty threshld setting. The abslute range f the detectr values is 0 t Present Threshld Each cver glass style has a unique present threshld. Initial set up MUST include setting the present threshld. T prperly set the Present threshld, fllw these steps: 1. Insert a cver glass int the hlder and nte the reading. 2. Multiply the reading by 0.9 (t subtract 10%). 3. Enter the value calculated in Step Remve ne r bth cver glasses and verify the detectrs are reading belw the Present threshld. Fr example: Figure 11 A 1000W (1kW) laser has an ptimum clean threshld f apprximately 1475 and a maximum dirty threshld f apprximately A reasnable dirty threshld setting wuld be apprximately If yu are mnitring tw cver glasses simultaneusly, repeat steps 1-4 abve fr the secnd cver glass Dirty Threshld The dirty threshld is less precise and is based n the pwer f the laser used. Once all setting mdificatins are cmplete, the settings must be lcked again. Click n the Settings menu and chse Unlck Settings. See Figure 9. OR Click n the Lck/Unlck buttn. See Figure 6. 16 4.4 Lgic Diagrams Lgic diagrams are a useful truble shting tl. Click n the number representing an utput n the start-up screen (see Figure 6) t view the crrespnding lgic diagram. Figure 12 shws an example f the lgic diagram fr Output #4 Everything. In this example there are n fault cnditins (refer t Figure 8 fr an example list f inputs and utputs). The bxes that are checked in the lwer prtin f the lgic diagram (A Present, A OK, A Temp OK, B Present, B OK, B Temp OK, and Temp Diff) define the cnditins that must be met in rder t activate the Everything utput. The lgic diagram fr any input r utput can be mdified. T mdify an input r utput (see Figure 12): 1. If necessary, unlck the settings and enter the passwrd accrding t Sectin Click n the number representing the utput t be mdified. See Figure 8 fr an example list f inputs and utputs. The apprpriate lgic diagram will appear. 3. Click the apprpriate check bx t add r remve the desired check marks. 4. Click the Set buttn at the bttm center f the lgic diagram. 5. The new listing f inputs and/r utputs will appear at the tp f the lgic diagram. 6. After all mdificatins are cmplete, click the red X in the upper right crner f the lgic diagram t clse it. Figure 12 In rder t read a fault cnditin, the crrespnding bx MUST be checked n the lgic diagram. If an input r utput is highlighted in green, is in the ON cnditin. The cnditin t activate the input r utput has been met. If an input r utput is nt highlighted (remains gray), it signifies the OFF cnditin. The cnditin t activate the input r utput has NOT been met. 4.5 Faults When a fault ccurs, the utput dependent n that cnditin turns ff. Als, the crrespnding status light n the cntrl bx will turn red. Faults ccur when: A detectr ges utside the acceptable range. A temperature reading is utside the acceptable range. A digital input turns ff. In the Temp A and Temp B sectins (see Figure 6 fr a sample image): The highest measured value (utside f the acceptable range) will be shwn in the clumn in red. 17 5 Service When the cver glass mnitr reaches the dirty threshld (see Sectin 4.3.2), it is necessary t clean r change the ptic. 5.1 Cleaning Optics Optics are very sensitive t dust and debris. It is extremely imprtant t take every pssible precautin t ensure the ptics remain pristine. Clean ptics in a dust free air-cnditined rm. ALWAYS handle ptics by their edges, never tuch the ptical surfaces. ALWAYS wear pwder free glves r finger cts when handling ptics and ptic hlders. Inspect the ptics with high pwer illuminatin, such as Laser Mechanisms pen light (part number PLTLS0021) under 2X magnificatin. 3. Sak a clean lens tissue (such as Texwipe Absrband Wipes r equivalent) with acetne r reagent grade isprpyl alchl. 4. With the saked lens tissue, wipe the ptic in ne directin. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 three times using a clean lens tissue. 6. Inspect the ptic. If there is any dust n it r it appears cludy repeat steps 2 thrugh 5. If it is clean, prceed t step While hlding the ptic by its edges place a clean piece f lens tissue ver the ptic, and then apply a few drps f Tech Spec lens cleaner r reagent grade isprpyl alchl t the lens tissue. 8. Drag the lens tissue ff the surface f the ptic in ne directin. 9. Repeat step 7 and 8 three times. 10. Rtate the ptic 90 0 and repeat steps 7 and 8 three times. 11. Inspect the ptic t make sure that it is clean. 12. Turn the ptic ver nt a clean lens tissue and repeat steps 2 thrugh 11 t clean the ther side. The fllwing instructins are prvided as a guide nly. Laser Mechanisms Inc. cannt be held respnsible fr any damage t ptics resulting frm imprper cleaning r handling. Cleaning instructins supplied by the ptics manufacturer shuld always be fllwed. 1. 18 5.2 Changing the Cver Glass Always wear pwder free glves r finger cts when handling ptics and ptic hlders. See Figure Step 1 a. Remve the cver glass drawer. b. Remve the cver glass lens frm the hlder by applying pressure with yur fingers t the surface f the cver glass, ppsite the face seal ring. The face seal ring and cver glass lens will pp ut. Save the face seal ring Step 2 a. Install the cleaned r new cver glass by placing it int the hlder Step 3 a. Press the face seal ring int the drawer t retain the cver glass.
