2 Designing a prject Preparing pictures fr use in a prject Open the desired picture(s). Prepare the picture(s) fr use in the prject, i.e. enhance the brightness/cntrast, remve red eye, change t black/white r sepia tnes, etc. Creating a new blank dcument Frm the Menu, click n File New Blank File Set the fllwing settings fr the prject: Name: (Optinal) Preset size: Click n the bx and chse a preset size such as US Paper, Pht, Scrapbking, Film & Vide, r Custm (type in the desired size in the width and height bxes). Size: Chse the actual paper size yu will be printing t fr the preset size that was selected. Fr example, if yu chse US Paper, the size ptins include Letter (8.5x11), Legal (8.5x14), r Tablid (11x17). Reslutin: Clr Mde: RGB clr Backgrund Cntents: White Adding a picture(s) t a prject Frm the Tlbx, click n the Mve Tl. Frm the Prject Bin, duble-click n the desired picture t bring it int the wrkspace. Left click n the picture in the wrkspace and drag it dwn t the Prject Bin and place it n tp f the prject page thumbnail. This will place a cpy f the picture n the prject page. Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, ntice that a new layer fr the picture has been created n the prject page. Nte: If a picture is mved frm the Prject Bin t the prject page that is in the wrkspace, the picture will be added as a Smart Object. Smart Object layers have a + in the lwer right crner f the thumbnail in the Layers Palette. Repeat the steps abve t add additinal pictures t the prject page. Turning n the Ruler/Grid The ruler and grid can be used t help align pictures n the prject page. Frm the Menu, click n View Rulers. Frm the Menu, click n View Grid. Nte: T turn ff the ruler r grid, repeat the steps abve. 2

3 Arranging pictures n a prject page Mving a picture: Frm the Tlbx, click n the Mve Tl. Click n the picture that will be mved and drag the picture t the desired lcatin n the prject page. Resizing a picture: Frm the Tlbx, click n the Mve Tl. Click nce n the picture that will be resized t select it. Click n ne f the crner handles and drag away frm the picture t make it larger OR twards the center f the picture t make it smaller. (If the picture is t large and yu can' Nte: Hlding dwn the Shift key when resizing pictures will distrt the picture. Click n the Checkmark belw the picture t cmplete the resizing actin. Saving a prject as a wrk in prgress Frm the Menu, click n File Save As Navigate t the lcatin where the prject will be saved. In the File name bx, type a name fr the prject. In the Frmat bx, chse Phtshp (*.PSD, *.PDD). Click Save. Creating backgrunds Slid clr backgrunds Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the Backgrund layer. At the tp f the Layers palette, click n the Create adjustment layer buttn. Chse Slid Clr frm the drp dwn list. Frm the Clr Picker windw, click n the desired clr OR chse a clr frm ne f the pictures in the prject by mving the muse pinter ver the picture and clicking n the desired clr. T change the clr, frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, duble-click n the adjustment layer thumbnail. 3

4 Gradient backgrunds Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the Backgrund layer. At the tp f the Layers palette, click n the Create adjustment layer buttn. Chse Gradient frm the drp dwn list. Click n the dwn arrw next t the Gradient bx t pen the gradient picker windw. T see mre gradient ptins, click n the duble arrws in the upper right crner t chse a different categry. Click n the desired gradient. T make changes t the gradient, frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, duble-click n the adjustment layer thumbnail. Pattern backgrunds Nte: Adjustments can be made t the gradient by chsing a different style, changing the directin f the angle f the gradient, r reversing the gradient clrs. Befre selecting a pattern it is best t change the view f the dcument t a 100% size s yu can see what the pattern will lk like when it is printed. T change the dcument t a 100% size, frm the Tlbx, duble-click n the Zm Tl. Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the Backgrund layer. At the tp f the Layers palette, click n the Create adjustment layer buttn. Chse Pattern frm the drp dwn list. Click n the Pattern bx t pen the pattern fill windw. T see mre pattern ptins, click n the duble arrws in the upper right crner t chse a different categry. Click n the desired pattern. T change the lk f the selected pattern, click n the drp-dwn arrw Scale bx and drag the slider t the desired psitin. Cmbinatin backgrunds Create an adjustment layer fr the pattern and als an adjustment layer fr the slid clr r gradient. Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, make sure the adjustment layers are next t each ther then click n the adjustment layer that is n the tp t select it. Reduce the pacity f the tp adjustment layer by clicking and dragging the Opacity slider t the left. (The pacity slider is in the upper right crner f the Layers palette.) Nte: The lwer the percentage f the pacity, the mre see-thrugh the layer becmes. 4

5 Using a picture r digital paper as a backgrund Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the Backgrund layer. Open the desired picture r digital paper. Click and drag the picture/digital paper n tp f the prject page thumbnail in the Prject Bin. Nte: If the picture/digital paper cvers ther bjects n the page, check the rder f the layers in the Layers palette. Rearrange the rder f the layers if necessary s that the picture/digital paper is just abve the Backgrund layer. T lighten the picture/digital paper: Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the picture/digital paper layer Click and drag the pacity slider in the upper right crner f the Layers palette t a lwer percentage. Hiding/Shwing individual layers Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, click n the visibility buttn in frnt f the desired layer t hide the layer. T shw the layer, repeat the abve step. Nte: Layers that are hidden will nt print. Adding a simple brder (utline) t a picture Click n the picture t select it. Frm the Menu, click n Edit Strke (Outline) Selectin Nte: If the Strke (Outline) Selectin ptin is grayed ut, right-click n the layer in the Layers Palette and chse Simplify Layer. Type in the desired width f the brder. Click n the clr bx and chse a clr fr the brder. Nte: Frm the Clr Picker windw, click n the desired clr OR chse a clr frm ne f the pictures in the prject by clicking n the desired clr in the picture. Chse the lcatin f the brder: inside the selectin, centered ver the selectin, r utside the selectin. 5

6 Adding titles, captins and jurnaling t a prject Creating text Frm the Tlbx, click n the Hrizntal Type Tl. Frm the Optins Bar, chse a fnt, size and clr fr the text. Click in the prject where the text is ging t g and type the text. Click n the Checkmark n the Optins Bar when finished. Mving text Frm the Tlbx, click n the Mve tl then click and drag the text t the desired lcatin. Resizing text Editing text Frm the Tlbx, click n the Mve Tl then click nce n the text t select it. Click n ne f the crner handles and drag away frm the text t make it larger r twards the center f the text t make it smaller. Click n the Checkmark belw the text t cmplete the resizing actin. Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, duble-click n the text layer thumbnail ( T ) t select the text. T chse a different fnt: Frm the Optins Bar, click nce n the name f the fnt in the fnt bx. Use the arrw up and arrw dwn keys n the keybard t mve thrugh the fnts and preview hw the fnt lks n the selected text. T change the clr f the text: Make sure the text is still selected. Frm the Optins Bar, click n the Set the text clr bx t pen the Clr Picker. Frm the Clr Picker windw, click n the desired clr OR chse a clr frm ne f the pictures in the prject by mving the muse pinter ver the picture and clicking n the desired clr. T change the shape f the text, frm the Optins Bar, click n the Create warped text buttn. Click n the Style bx and chse a style fr the text. Make any desired adjustments, i.e. hrizntal t vertical, bend, hrizntal distrtin, vertical distrtin. T change between hrizntal and vertical text, frm the Optins Bar, click n the Change text rientatin buttn. When finished editing the text, frm the Optins Bar, click n the Checkmark. 6

7 Outlining text Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, right-click n the text layer and chse Simplify Layer. Nte: Simplifying text will change the text s that it is n lnger editable. Frm the Menu, click n Edit Strke (Outline) Selectin Type in the desired width f the utline. Click n the clr bx and chse a clr fr the utline. Nte: Frm the Clr Picker windw, click n the desired clr OR chse a clr frm ne f the pictures in the prject by clicking n the desired clr in the picture. Chse the lcatin f the utline: inside the selectin, centered ver the selectin, r utside the selectin. Adding shapes, clipart r embellishments t a prject Creating custm shapes The Shape Tl is a great tl t use fr creating digital vellum, frames/mattes arund pictures, digital brads, r even digital stickers n a prject page. Frm the Tlbx, press and hld the Shape Tl then chse the desired tl. T see mre shapes, chse the Custm Shape Tl, then frm the Optins Bar click n the Shape bx. Click n the arrw in the upper right crner t see different categries f shapes. With the desired tl selected, click and drag the muse n the prject page t create the shape. Nte: The shape will be filled with the clr that is selected in the Set fregrund clr bx. T change the fill clr f a shape: Frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, dubleclick n the layer thumbnail fr the desired shape t pen the Clr Picker windw. Frm the Clr Picker windw, click n the desired clr OR chse a clr frm ne f the pictures in the prject by clicking n the desired clr in the picture. T make a cpy f a shape, hld dwn the Alt key then click n the shape and drag the muse t a new lcatin. A cpy f the shape will be placed n a new layer. If the shape is t small and can t be selected easily, click n the Zm Tl and drag a selectin arund the shape t magnify the selected area. T create digital vellum, reduce the pacity f the shape layer by sliding the pacity slider in the Layers palette t a lwer percentage. 7

8 Creating custm shapes ut f pictures Open the desired picture. In the Editr, frm the Tlbx, click n the Ckie Cutter Tl. Frm the Optins Bar, click n Shape bx t see a variety f different shapes. Nte: T see mre shapes, click n the arrw in the upper right crner f the shapes bx and frm the menu chse All Elements Shapes. Duble-click n the desired shape. (Optinal) T feather the edges f the picture, n the Optins Bar type the desired amunt f feathering in the Feather bx. T crp the canvas t fit the shape f the picture, frm the Optins Bar check the Crp bx. Click and drag ver the picture t a preferred size then release the muse buttn. The picture will be crpped t fit within the shape. T mve the shape t a different part f the picture, click in the picture and drag the shape t a different lcatin. T resize the shape, click and drag ne f the handles n the bunding bx that surrunds the picture. Nte: T keep the shape in prprtin, hld dwn the Shift key then click and drag. T rtate the shape, mve the cursr utside the bunding bx until the cursr becmes a curved duble-arrw then click and drag. Click n the Checkmark in the lwer right crner f the crp selectin t crp the picture OR press the Enter key n the keybard. Adding custm shape pictures, clipart r embellishments t a page Frm the Menu, click n File Open. Navigate t the lcatin f the custm shape picture, clipart r embellishment then duble-click n the custm shape picture, clipart r embellishment t pen it in Phtshp Elements. Press Ctrl+A n the keybard t select the entire picture r embellishment. Nte: If nly part f the picture is needed, use ne f the selectin tls t select the desired area. Press Ctrl+C n the keybard t cpy the clipart r embellishment t the clipbard. Frm the Prject Bin, duble-click n the prject page t pen it in the wrkspace. Press Ctrl+V t paste the clipart r embellishment n the page. Adding layer styles t bjects n the page Frm the Palette Bin in the Effects palette, click n the Layer Styles buttn. Click n the dwn arrw in the bx t the right f the Layer Styles buttn and chse a layer style categry, i.e. Drp Shadws, Bevels, etc. Duble-click n the desired layer style. T cancel a layer style, frm the Palette Bin in the Layers palette, right-click n the buttn n the layer that has the effect and chse Clear Layer Style. 8

9 Saving Saving the prject fr printing at anther lcatin Nte: Make sure the page has already been saved in a PSD frmat. Frm the Menu, click n File Save As Navigate t the lcatin where the prject is t be saved. Type a name fr the prject in the filename bx. Change the frmat f the prject t a JPG Frmat by clicking n the Frmat bx and chsing JPEG. Click Save. Set the quality t Maximum s the quality f the printing will be the best quality. Click Save. Saving the prject fr the web Prjects that are saved fr the web can be sent t thers as an attachment r psted t a web page. Reducing the reslutin Nte: Make sure the prject has already been saved in a PSD frmat. Frm the Menu, click n Image Resize Image Size. Make sure the Resample Image bx is checked. Change the Reslutin t 72. Saving fr the web Frm the Menu, click n File Save fr Web Change Preset t JPEG Medium. Change the Width t 450 pixels. Click Apply. Ntice the cmparisn in file size and als the lad time f the prject when viewed n the web. Chse a lcatin t save the prject then give the prject a name (i.e. mypage-resized). Click Save. 9

10 Printing the prject page n yur wn printer Frm the Menu, click n File Print. Nte: Fr best results, use the full sized picture nt the picture that was resized t 450 pixel width. Printing a resized picture t an 8x10 print size will result in a blurry picture. Chse the printer where the picture will be printed. Click n the Print Size drp dwn bx and chse the size fr the printed page. Type in the number f desired cpies. Make adjustments t Scaled Print Size (if necessary). T rtate the page, click n the Print paper in prtrait rientatin OR Print paper in landscape rientatin buttns lcated in the lwer left crner beneath the Preview windw. (Optinal) T add a brder arund the page: Frm the Output sectin, check the Brder bx. Enter the desired thickness fr the brder. Click n the clr bx clr and chse the desired clr fr the brder. (Optinal) T add a backgrund clr t the page: Frm the Output sectin, check the Backgrund bx. Click n the clr bx and chse the desired clr fr the backgrund. (Optinal) Frm the Output sectin, check the bx t Print Crp Marks if desired. In the Clr Management sectin, click n the Printer Preferences buttn and chse the type f paper that the prject page will be printed n, i.e. standard, glssy, matte, etc. Nte: The settings fr the printer will vary depending n the type f printer. Click n Print. 10
