3 1. Basic system requirements The WHO e-atlas f disaster risk fr the Eurpean Regin, Vlume 1, versin 2.0: Expsure t natural hazards is a DVD, created in HTML, that runs autmatically nce inserted. The basic system requirements are: Intel Pentium prcessr Micrsft Windws (98/NT/2000/XP) 256 Mb f RAM DVD ROM drive Adbe Reader 7.0 r higher (t pen and/r print the maps and files). Click here t install Adbe Reader Tips If the DVD des nt aut run, g t My cmputer, right click n the DVD drive and chse Open, then duble click n the file wh.exe. The menus are active at all times t ease navigatin frm ne sectin t anther. These menus are available at the tp and bttm f each page. The e-atlas windw can be minimized n yur cmputer screen by hitting the Esc key n yur keybard. T clse the e-atlas, clse the windw f yur internet brwser. 3

Structure f the WHO e-atlas The hme page f the e-atlas prvides links t the varius sectins thrugh: (1) the main menu at the tp f the page; and (2) the data-and-dcuments menu at the bttm f the page (Fig. 1). 5 Intrductin The Intrductin menu cntains: - a frewrd by the Cuntry Emergency Preparedness Prgramme fr Eurpe - the instructins fr use f the e-atlas - acknwledgements Methdlgy By selecting the Methdlgy submenu, users can access dcuments describing the methd and implementatin prcess used t generate the maps included in the e-atlas View atlas by Clicking n the View atlas by ptin n the main menu allws users t access the hazardspecific cuntry maps, tables and graphs cntained in the DVD. 6 View atlas by "Cuntry" Clicking n Cuntry in the View atlas by submenu prduces a map f the WHO Eurpean Regin allwing users t access the cuntry f their chice either by clicking n the actual cuntry r the name f cuntry n the map itself (Fig. 3). Fig. 3. Map fr selectin f cuntries 6

7 On selecting a cuntry, the windw shwn in Fig. 4 will appear n the screen allwing users t access: - a hazard-specific cuntry-level map (by clicking n the crrespnding hazard icn (Fig. 4, pint 1)); - a graph depicting the percentage f ppulatin expsed t hazards, by level f intensity (by clicking n Graph (Fig. 4, pint 2)); - a table illustrating the ttal number and percentage f the ppulatin expsed t hazards, by level f intensity (by clicking n Statistics (Fig. 4, pint 3)). 8 Pint 1. Access t hazard- specific cuntry-level maps. Clicking n the desired hazard icn (Fig. 4, pint 1), pens a windw shwing a map f the cuntry in questin (Fig. 5). Infrmatin abut the hazard selected appears in the legend t the right f the map. At the tp right-hand crner f the map, the navigatin buttn allws users t zm and mve arund the map. Graph presenting the percentage f ppulatin expsed t hazards, by level f intensity Clicking n Graph (Fig. 4, pint 2) prduces a graph (Fig. 6) illustrating the percentage f the ppulatin expsed t hazards, by level f intensity. 11 View atlas by Regin The structure f this subsectin is the same as that f the View atlas by cuntry subsectin. Here users can search fr and view maps shwing hazard distributin fr thse cuntries f the Eurpean Regin cvered in the e-atlas. After selecting a hazard type, a map will appear shwing the distributin f the hazard accrding t the legend (Fig. 8). Users have the ptin f pening and printing the map in Adbe Reader frmat. Fig. 8. Left click the muse and mve the cursr in the directin f the sectin f the map that yu wish t view. 11

12 View atlas by Hazard This subsectin allws users t search fr and view maps by hazard type. Fig. 9 illustrates the fllwing prcess. (i) Click n View atlas by then Hazard, as shwn in the first windw. A list f hazards will drp dwn. Clicking n the desired hazard will pen the secnd windw displaying a list f cuntries. (ii) Click n the desired cuntry (secnd windw). This will prduce a map f the desired cuntry shwing hazard distributin and intensity levels (third windw). (iii) The navigatin buttn shwn in the tp right-hand crner f the third windw permits users t zm and mve arund n the map. Clicking n Map in PDF abve the tp right-hand crner f the map will allw users t pen and print in Adbe Reader frmat. Fig. 9. Dcuments and data sectin The dcuments and data sectin cmprises the fllwing subsectins: Glssary; Reslutins and Reprts; Publicatins; Links; Data; Assciated tls; Phts; Cntact us; and Cpyright Glssary This sectin cntains the list f basic terms related t disaster risk reductin published by the Internatinal Strategy fr Disaster Reductin (ISDR) in PDF versins in English and Russian are als prvided (Fig. 10). 17 Data This subsectin is divided int the fllwing three parts (Fig. 14). (i) Surce data. This part prvides access t the surce data used in the e-atlas fr which there are n redistributin rights. Infrmatin cncerning the ther surce data used and the riginal data-prviders can be fund in the metadata files. (ii) Hazard distributin grids and maps. Here the user can access the unclassified (GIS frmat) and classified (GIS and PDF frmat) versins f the hazard distributin maps resulting frm the applicatin f the different mdels reprted in the methdlgy and implementatin prcess dcuments (see Methdlgy). (iii) Ppulatin expsure distributin table. This part permits access t a table summarizing infrmatin abut the distributin f peple expsed t hazards by intensity level f each hazard. Fig. 14. Data 17
