The inverter cver must be pened nly after shutting ff the inverter ON/OFF switch lcated at the bttm f the Primary Unit, abve the Cnnectin Unit. This disables the DC vltage inside the inverter and pens the AC relays. Wait five minutes befre pening the cver. Otherwise, there is a risk f electric shck frm energy stred in the capacitrs. 11 Chapter 1: Intrducing the SlarEdge Pwer Harvesting System Chapter 1: Intrducing the SlarEdge Pwer Harvesting System The SlarEdge pwer harvesting slutin is designed t maximize the pwer utput frm any type f slar Phtvltaic (PV) installatin while reducing the average cst per watt. The fllwing sectins describe each f the system s cmpnents. Pwer Optimizer Figure 1: The SlarEdge pwer harvesting system cmpnents The pwer ptimisers are DC-DC cnverters cnnected t PV mdules in rder t maximize pwer harvesting by perfrming independent Maximum Pwer Pint Tracking (MPPT) at the mdule level. The pwer ptimisers regulate the string vltage at a cnstant level, regardless f string length and envirnmental cnditins. The pwer ptimisers include a safety vltage functin that autmatically reduces the utput f each pwer ptimiser t 1 Vdc in the fllwing cases: During fault cnditins The pwer ptimisers are discnnected frm the inverter The inverter ON/OFF switch is turned OFF The safety switch n the Cnnectin Unit is turned OFF The inverter AC breaker is turned OFF The Rapid Shutdwn (PVRSS) is initiated by ne f the fllwing methds: Inverter AC breaker is turned OFF, r AC t the inverter is discnnected by anther methd (intentinally r as result f a fault) Inverter ON/OFF switch is turned OFF The Cnnectin Unit is turned OFF Each pwer ptimiser als transmits mdule perfrmance data ver the DC pwer line t the inverter. 12 Chapter 1: Intrducing the SlarEdge Pwer Harvesting System Three Phase Inverter with Synergy Technlgy The Three Phase Inverter with synergy technlgy inverter (referred t as 'inverter' in this manual ) efficiently cnverts DC pwer frm the mdules int AC pwer that can be fed int the main AC service f the site and frm there t the grid. The inverter als receives the mnitring data frm each pwer ptimiser and transmits it t the SlarEdge mnitring platfrm (requires Internet r Cellular cnnectin). The inverter is cmprised f ne Primary Unit with an integrated Cnnectin Unit with a DC Safety Switch (referred t as 'Cnnectin Unit ' in this manual) fr discnnecting the DC pwer f a SlarEdge system, and f ne r tw Secndary Units, depending n the inverter's capacity. The Secndary Unit(s) are cnnected t the primary unit with AC, DC and cmmunicatin cables. Each unit perates independently and cntinues t wrk in case the thers are nt perating. Yu can set up a master- slave cnfiguratin, cnnecting up t 31 additinal inverters t ne master inverter. Figure 2: Primary Unit with tw Secndary Units 11

13 Mnitring Platfrm Mnitring Platfrm The mnitring platfrm enables mnitring the technical and financial perfrmance f ne r mre SlarEdge sites. It prvides past and present infrmatin n the system perfrmance bth at the system and mdule levels. Supprted AC Grids The fllwing sectin shws the AC grids supprted by the inverters (mdel dependent). Grund cnnectin is required fr all grids, as described in Cnnecting the AC Grid and Grunding t the Cnnectin Unit n page 32. Installatin Prcedure The fllwing is the prcedure fr installing and setting up a new SlarEdge site. Many f these als apply t mdificatin f an existing site. 1. Use f an impact driver is nt recmmended. Apprpriate munting hardware (fr example: stainless blts, nuts, and washers) fr attaching: the Primary and Secndary Unit(s) munting brackets t the munting surface the pwer ptimisers t the racking (nt required fr smart mdules) 4xM8 ring terminals and a suitable crimper Wire cutters Wire strippers Vltmeter Fr installing the cmmunicatin ptins, yu may als need the fllwing: Fr Ethernet: Fr RS485: CAT5/6 twisted pair Ethernet cable with RJ45 cnnectr If using a CAT5/6 cable spl: RJ45 plug and RJ45 crimper Fur- r six-wire shielded twisted pair cable. 15 Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Safety The fllwing ntes and warnings apply when installing the SlarEdge pwer ptimisers. Sme f the fllwing may nt be applicable t smart mdules: WARNING! The metallic enclsure f the pwer ptimiser must be grunded in accrdance with the prduct's listing and lcal and natinal cdes. L'enceinte métallique de l ptimiseur de puissance dit être mise à la terre en accrd avec les régulatins lcales et natinales. WARNING! When mdifying an existing installatin, turn OFF the inverter ON/OFF switch, the Cnnectin Unit and the AC circuit breaker n the main AC distributin panel. Avant de faire ces étapes, éteignez l'nduleur mnphasé en mettant sur OFF l'interrupteur ON/OFF situé au bas de l'nduleur. CAUTION! Pwer ptimisers are IP68/NEMA6P rated. Chse a munting lcatin where ptimisers will nt be submerged in water. Les ptimiseurs de puissances snt cmpatibles à la nrme IP68/NEMA6P. Chisissez le lieu de mntage tel que l ptimiseur ne puisse pas être submergé par l eau. CAUTION! This unit must be perated accrding t the perating specificatins prvided with the unit. Cette unité dit être pérée suivant les instructins truvées dans le manuel furni avec le prduit. CAUTION! Cutting the pwer ptimiser input r utput cable cnnectr is prhibited and will vid the warranty. If yu intend t munt the ptimisers directly t the mdule r mdule frame, first cnsult the mdule manufacturer fr guidance regarding the munting lcatin and the impact, if any, n mdule warranty. Drilling hles in the mdule frame shuld be dne accrding t the mdule manufacturer instructins. They carry nly a lw safety vltage befre the inverter is turned ON. As lng as the pwer ptimisers are nt cnnected t the inverter r the inverter is turned OFF, each pwer ptimiser will utput a safe vltage f 1V. 14

16 Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers CAUTION! Installing a SlarEdge system withut ensuring cmpatibility f the mdule cnnectrs with the ptimiser cnnectrs may be unsafe and culd cause functinality prblems such as grund faults, resulting in inverter shut dwn. T ensure mechanical cmpatibility f the SlarEdge ptimisers cnnectrs with the PV mdules cnnectrs t which they are cnnected: Use identical cnnectrs frm the same manufacturer and f the same type n bth the pwer ptimisers and n the mdules; r Verify that the cnnectrs are cmpatible in the fllwing way: The mdule cnnectr manufacturer shuld explicitly verify cmpatibility with the SlarEdge ptimiser cnnectr; and A third-party test reprt by ne f the listed external labs (TUV, VDE, Bureau Veritas UL, CSA, InterTek) shuld be btained, verifying the cmpatibility f the cnnectrs. Make sure t use pwer ptimisers that have the required utput cnductr length: Minimize the use f extensins between pwer ptimisers. Yu can use extensin cables between rws and frm the end f string t the inverter. D nt use extensin cables between the mdules and the pwer ptimisers, r between tw pwer ptimisers within a string. 15

17 Step 1: Munting and Grunding the Pwer Optimizers The minimum and maximum string length guidelines are stated in the pwer ptimiser datasheets. Refer t the Designer fr string length verificatin. The Designer is available n the SlarEdge website at Cmpletely shaded mdules may cause their pwer ptimisers t temprarily shut dwn. This will nt affect the perfrmance f the ther pwer ptimisers in the string, as lng as the minimum number f unshaded pwer ptimisers cnnected in a string f mdules is met. If under typical cnditins fewer than the minimum ptimisers are cnnected t unshaded mdules, add mre ptimisers t the string. Equipment grunding tightening trques: 4-6 AWG: 45 lb-in, 8 AWG: 40 lb-in, AWG: 35 lb-in. T allw fr heat dissipatin, maintain a 2.5 cm / 1" clearance distance between the pwer ptimiser and ther surfaces, n all sides except the munting bracket side. The SlarEdge-supplied grunding lug kit has been evaluated nly fr use with SlarEdge pwer ptimizers. It is nt intended r listed t be used as a general purpse grunding lug with ther electrical equipment. 17

Fr example, if 10 pwer ptimisers are cnnected in a string, then 10V shuld be prduced. Make sure the PV mdules are expsed t sunlight during this prcess. The pwer ptimiser will nly turn ON if the PV mdule prvides at least 2W. In SlarEdge systems, due t the intrductin f pwerptimisers between the PV mdules and the inverter, the shrt circuit current I SC and the pen circuit vltage V OC hld different meanings frm thse in traditinal systems. Verify crrect plarity by measuring the string plarity with a vltmeter. Use a vltmeter with at least 0.1V measurement accuracy. Insert the supplied screw thrugh the right side f the heat sink and int the bracket. 8. Munt the Secndary Unit(s): Figure 19: Hanging units There is n specific rder fr hanging the Secndary Units. When installing a 2 unit inverter, munt the Secndary Unit t the left f the Primary Unit. Lift the Secndary Unit(s) frm the sides, r hld it at the tp and bttm f the unit t lift int place. Align the tw indentatins in the enclsure with the tw triangular munting tabs f the bracket, and lwer the unit until it rests n the bracket evenly (see Figure 19). Insert ne f the supplied screws thrugh the uter side f the heat sink and int the bracket. Tighten the screws with a trque f 4.0N*m / 2.9 lb.*ft. 9. Secure the Cnnectin Unit t the wall: Mark the lcatin f the bracket screw and drill the hle Fasten the bracket using a standard blt Verify that the bracket is firmly attached t the munting surface. The Cnnectin Unit is rated t the maximum perating cnditins f the inverter. Inverters f different mdels might be equipped with different sizes/ types f terminal blcks. NOTE If cnnecting t a Delta Grid perfrm the 'T set the inverter fr 208V delta grid cnnectin' prcedure as described in Setting the Inverter t Supprt 208V 3-wire Grid n page 36, befre cnnecting the AC and strings t the Cnnectin Unit. Inverters may have a different number f pairs f DC input terminals, depending n the inverter pwer rating. If mre strings are required, they can be cnnected in parallel using an external cmbiner bx befre cnnecting t the Cnnectin Unit; strings cnnected t different units cannt be cmbined. When cnnecting multiple strings, it is recmmended t run separate circuits t the Cnnectin Unit r t psitin the cmbiner bx near the Cnnectin Unit.This simplifies cmmissining by allwing testing and servicing near the inverter. T cnnect the strings t the Cnnectin Unit with glands/cnduits: 1. Strip 5 16'' (8 mm) f the DC wire insulatin. 2. Insert the DC cnduit int the DC-side pening n the Cnnectin Unit (left side at the bttm f the Cnnectin Unit). 3. Equipment grunding: Cnnect the DC equipment grund cnductr t the equipment grunding terminal blck (bus-bar) in the Cnnectin Unit. NOTE Functinal Electrical Earthing f DC-side negative r psitive is prhibited because the inverter has n transfrmer. Equipment grunding f expsed cnductive surfaces in the array is required per the NEC. 4. Cnnect the DC wires t the DC+ and DC- terminal blcks, accrding t the labels n the terminals. r; cnnect tw wires (DC+ and DC-) per string: a. Use a standard flat-blade screwdriver t cnnect the wires t the spring-clamp terminals. The screwdriver blade shuld fit freely in the terminal pening. T large a blade can crack the plastic husing. b. Insert the screwdriver and firmly tilt it t press the release mechanism and pen the clamp. 34

The psitin f the fuse cnfigures the AC grid cnnectin: 4- wire r 3-wire grid cnnectin. By default, the fuse is lcated in the 4-wire fuse hlder f the inverter, and in the 3-wire fuse hlder there is a plastic dummy fuse. T set the inverter fr 3-wire grid cnnectin, yu must mve the fuse frm the 4-wire fuse hlder, marked as Y GRID, t the 3-wire fuse hlder, marked as GRID (see ). CAUTION! Once all cnnectins are made, the system shuld be activated and cmmissined using the Inverter SetApp mbile applicatin. Yu can dwnlad the app frm the Apple App Stre and Ggle Play prir t reaching the site. Internet cnnectin is required fr the dwnlad and fr the ne-time registratin, hwever nt required fr using the SetApp. Step 1: Activating the Installatin During system activatin, a Wi-Fi cnnectin is created between the mbile device and the inverter and the system firmware is upgraded. Befre activatin - dwnlad, register (first time nly) and lg-in t SetApp n yur mbile device. Internet cnnectin is required fr the dwnlad and fr the ne-time registratin. Verify that the applicatin is updated with the latest versin. T activate the installatin: 1. Turn ON the AC circuit breaker n the main distributin panel. 2. Mve the Cnnectin Unit DC switch t the ON psitin. 3. Open SetApp and fllw the instructins n the screen (scan the inverter bar-cde; mve the ON/OFF/P switch t P psitin and release within 5 sec. back t ON (1) psitin). SetApp creates a Wi-Fi cnnectin, upgrades the inverter CPU firmware and activates the inverter. 4. The Mnitring System The mnitring platfrm enables accessing site infrmatin, including up-t-date infrmatin viewed in a physical r lgical view. The mnitring platfrm is described in detail in the Mnitring Platfrm User Guide, available n the SlarEdge website at The mnitring platfrm can display lgical and physical layuts f the installed system, as fllws: Lgical Layut: Shws a schematic lgical layut f the cmpnents in the system, such as: inverters, strings and mdules, as well as their electrical cnnectivity. This view enables yu t see which mdules are cnnected in each string, which strings are cnnected t each inverter, and s n. Physical Layut: Shws a schematic physical layut f the cmpnents in the system, such as: inverters, strings and mdules, as well as their electrical cnnectivity. This view enables a bird s eye view f the actual lcatin f a system cmpnent. Using the platfrm, yu can: View the latest perfrmance f specific cmpnents. Find under-perfrming cmpnents, such as mdules, by cmparing their perfrmance t that f ther cmpnents f the same type. Pinpint the lcatin f alerted cmpnents using the physical layut. See hw cmpnents are cnnected t each ther. Pair pwer ptimisers remtely. Chapter 5: Activating, Cmmissining and Cnfiguring the System Using the Inverter T display a lgical layut, insert the inverter serial number in the new site created in the applicatin. When the cmmunicatin between the inverter and the mnitring server is established, the lgical layut is displayed. T display a physical layut, yu need t map the lcatins f the installed pwer ptimisers. T generate a physical mapping, use either the Site Mapper applicatin r the physical layut editr in the mnitring platfrm. The lgical and physical mapping can be used fr debugging a prblem using the mnitring platfrm. If yu d nt reprt the physical and lgical mapping f the installed pwer ptimisers t SlarEdge, the mnitring platfrm will shw the lgical layut indicating which pwer ptimisers are cnnected t which inverter, but will nt shw strings r the physical lcatin f pwer ptimisers. The inverter may be cnnected t the mnitring platfrm via LAN r by using a ZigBee Gateway system r a Cellular Plug-in. Alternatively, yu can use RS485 chain (bus) cnnectin t cnnect multiple SlarEdge devices t ne inverter that is already cnnected t the server, in a master/slave cnfiguratin. Discnnect the AC t the inverter by turning OFF the circuit breakers n the distributin panel. 3. Open the Cnnectin Unit cver: a. Release the six Allen screws f the cver. b. Tilt the tp f the cver twards yu. c. Slide the cver dwn and remve it. CAUTION! When remving the cver, make sure nt t damage internal cmpnents.
