6 Installatin guide slar mdules 2. INTRODUCTION This manual cntains infrmatin regarding the safe installatin and handling f phtvltaic (PV) mdules prduced by MegaCell s.r.l. (Megacell) IMPORTANT: Megacell mdules use high efficiency BISN BIFACIAL slar cells. These mdules prduce pwer frm bth the frnt and back f the mdule with significant mre pwer than their STC rating. T ptimize electrical dimensining and installatin, make sure t read these munting instructins carefully befre installing, cmmissining r servicing the PV system and keep these instructins in a well accessible lcatin. Failure t cmply with these safety instructins may result in persnal injury and prduct damage. We strive t be the leader in innvatin and research, while cntinuing t imprve ur prducts. Fr this reasn we reserve the right t make changes t this installatin guide withut prir ntice. 2.1 Disclaimer f liability Since the methds f system design, installatin techniques, handling and use f this prduct are beynd cmpany cntrl, MegaCell des nt assume respnsibility and expressly disclaims liability, fr lss, damage r expense resulting frm imprper installatin, handling r use. The infrmatin in this manual is based n MegaCell s knwledge and experience and it is believed t be reliable. MegaCell reserves the right t change the manual, the PV mdule, the specificatins, r prduct infrmatin sheets withut prir ntice. 2.2 IEC & certificatins This prduct meets r exceeds the requirements set frth by IEC and fr PV Mdules. These standards cver flat-plate PV mdules and panels intended fr installatin n buildings r thse intended t be freestanding. This prduct is nt intended fr use where artificially cncentrated sunlight is applied t the mdule. 2.3 Limited Warranty Please refer t MegaCell General Terms and Cnditins f Sale fr details f the mdules Limited Warranty. Failure t cmply with this Safety and Installatin Manual will invalidate MegaCell Warranty fr the PV mdules as stated in the General Terms and Cnditins f Sale. V1 April

7 Installatin guide slar mdules 2.4 Mdule specificatin Please refer t the apprpriate MegaCell MBF r MBA datasheet fr electrical perfrmance data and mechanical installatin infrmatin. 2.5 Prduct identificatin Each mdule can be identified by means f the fllwing embedded infrmatin: Nameplate: it is lcated n the reverse side f the mdule r n the frame. It gives infrmatin abut the main parameters f the mdule referred t STC cnditin : Prduct Type, Maximum Pwer, Current at Maximum Pwer, Vltage at Maximum pwer, Open Circuit Vltage, Shrt Circuit Current, all as measured under Standard Test Cnditins, weight, dimensins, Maximum System Vltage, etc. Warning : bifacial mdules increase energy and pwer prductin respect t STC nminal data thrugh Albed n rear surface. Refer t the specific area n data sheet fr real parameters expected after installatin t calculate crrectly inverter, cables and cnnectin size. Serial number: Each individual mdule is identified by a unique serial number accmpanied with a barcde. They are permanently inserted inside the laminate, under the frnt glass f the mdule, visible when viewed frm the frnt f the mdule. 3. SAFETY INFORMATION 3.1 Imprtant safety precautins The use f these mdules must cmply with riginal design purpses. Installatin shuld be perfrmed nly by qualified and authrized persnnel. Installers shuld assume the risk f all injury that might ccur during installatin including, withut limitatin, the risk f electric shck. Mdule installatin must be perfrmed in cmpliance with any applicable lcal and natinal standards, cdes and regulatins. Within the mdules there are n user serviceable parts. D nt attempt t repair any part f the mdules. Mdules prduce vltage even when nt cnnected t an electrical circuit r lad and have n n/ff switch. Mdules can be rendered inperative nly by remving them frm sunlight, r by V1 April

IMPORTANT : MegaCell bifacial mdules prduce vltage when expsed t light als n back side D nt expse the mdules t artificially cncentrated sunlight D nt stand n, drp, scratch, r allw bjects t fall n the mdules. D nt lift the mdules by the junctin bx r junctin bx cables. D nt install r handle the mdules when they are wet r during perids f high winds. Ensure that junctin bx cables are prvided with strain relief t avid damage t the junctin bx, maintaining a minimum bending radius f 50 mm at all lcatins alng the cable. D nt leave cable cnnectrs expsed in adverse climatic cnditins. Water and dust depsits inside the cable cnnectrs can cause lng term damage. A mdule with brken glass, damaged junctin bx, cnnectrs r cables present electrical safety hazards and must be remved frm service. 3.2 Warning: Extreme Danger due t electrical shck! Slar mdules generate electricity. When expsed t light, a vltage ccurs, which can be dangerus and life-threatening. Even thugh the individual mdules generate a relatively lw vltage f 50 V DC, the vltage will accumulate as sn as several mdules are cnnected in series. Mdules cnnected in parallel result in accumulatin f the currents. Althugh the fully insulated plug cntacts are designed t prtect against accidental cntact, the fllwing instructins must be fllwed when handling the slar mdules in rder t avid cmbustin, spark frmatin and, abve all, fatal electrical shcks: Never insert electrically cnducting pieces int the plugs and sckets. D nt wear metallic jewelry during mechanical and electrical installatin. Keep the tls and wrk area dry. Only install slar mdules and wires with dry plugs and sckets. Maintain utmst cautin and care. When wrking n the wires, always use bth tls and glves which are insulated. D nt disassemble the mdules. Never remve parts r name plates fitted by the manufacturer. Only use flawless mdules. D nt treat the back side f the mdules with sharp bjects, paints r adhesives. D nt expse mdules t artificially cncentrated sunlight It is abslutely necessary that the wiring f the mdules is nly carried ut by qualified and authrized persnnel. V1 April

9 Installatin guide slar mdules 3.3 Warning: Danger due t high vltage Even in discnnected cnditin the inverter can retain high vltages, which is a majr shck hazard. Therefre: Be very cautius when wrking with the inverter and wires. After switching ff the inverter as well as befre wrking n the inverter, make sure t regulate the time intervals as recmmended by the manufacturer s that the high vltage cmpnents can be discharged Make sure t adhere t the assembly regulatins f the inverter manufacturer. 3.4 Warning: Danger due t electric arc The slar mdules generate a direct current when expsed t light. When pening a clsed circuit, e.g. discnnecting the direct current wire frm the laded inverter, a fatal electric arc may ccur. Never discnnect the slar generatr frm the inverter while the inverter is cnnected t the grid Make sure t use nly flawless wire cnnectins! Cnnect wires seamlessly and keep them free frm dirt 4. PACKAGING, HANDLING AND STORAGE 4.1 Transprt, temprary strage and safe unpacking Please refers t the instructins printed n the cartn bx f each pallet The mdules are sensitive technical cmpnents, which must be handled with utmst care. Therefre, be particularly careful during transprt and temprary strage and leave the mdules in the package until they are used. Always lift and carry the mdule with bth hands and never carry by means f the junctin bx. D nt drp the mdules r place them dwn clumsily n a hard flr and/r n the mdule crners. D nt place any bjects n the mdules. D nt stack the mdules withut prtectin. Avid deflectin f the mdules. D nt walk n the mdules. D nt treat with sharp bjects and keep all electrical cntact areas clean and dry. Fr dcumentatin purpses, the serial number shuld be nted. If required, the mdules shuld be temprarily stred in a dry, ventilated rm. Clean, nn-slip glves must be wrn during all transprt and installatin wrk t prevent cut injuries frm the panel edges. Cntaminatin f the slar glass with fingerprints must als be avided, as this may damage the special cating n the glass. Please pay special attentin t the warnings n the package as well as n the enclsed unpacking instructins! V1 April

10 Installatin guide slar mdules 4.2 Installing the mdule Make sure that the installatin is carried ut safely. Prtect yurself and ther persns frm falling, d nt carry ut the installatin in heavy winds and eliminate the risk f falling bjects as much as pssible. Secure the wrk area in rder t avid the endangerment r injury f persns. In rder nt t exceed the max. System vltage at -10 C, the MBF-GG60 and MBA-GG60 mdules must nt be cnnected in series with mre than 22 mdules. Additinally, the requirements f the inverters must be bserved. In any case, specific checking have t be dne by the designer, cnsidering the mdules wrking temperatures. 4.3 Observe the allwable maximum mechanical lading: D nt exceed the maximum mechanical lading and avid lcal pressure. Make sure t cnsider lcatinspecific lads such as wind r snw. Remember that the mdule might sag when laded under certain circumstances. In rder t avid damaging the mdule by pinted r uneven structures, d nt place fasteners r cable ties between the rear f the mdule and the crss sectin. 4.4 Make sure that the surrundings are suitable: Make sure that after installatin the mdule is neither subjected t artificially cncentrated sunlight, immersed in water r cntinuusly splashed with liquids. By all means make sure that the mdule is nt subjected t abnrmal chemical expsure. Expsing the mdule t extreme levels f salt r sulphur may lead t crrsin. 4.5 The crrect lcatin fr installatin: Beside the mdule itself, the munting system must als be suited t the expected cnditins at the lcatin f installatin (snw, wind) and withstand them easily. The bttm side f the mdule frame (if present) features hles fr draining precipitatin water. Make sure during installatin that these hles retain their functin. Fr prtrait munting, the junctin bx may be munted facing up r dwn n the underside f the mdule but it s preferable t be munted facing upwards n the underside f the mdule. 4.6 Yield maintenance thrugh ptimal alignment and inclinatin: We advise yu t familiarize yurself with the apprpriate alignment and inclinatin f the mdules prir t installatin in rder t ensure an ptimal system yield. The ideal cnditins fr the generatin f electricity are accmplished when the sun rays reach the generatr surface perpendicularly. Fr mdules cnnected in a series, make sure that all mdules have the same alignment and inclinatin in rder t avid perfrmance lsses. V1 April

11 Installatin guide slar mdules 4.7 Install the mdule in an area free f shade: Even a lw degree f shading will have a negative effect n the system yield. Therefre, the system must be installed in a lcatin withut shading. The mdule shuld never be shaded cmpletely during the whle year. 4.8 Maximizing Pwer Output thrugh Bifaciality Output pwer in increased prprtinally t albed received by rear side f mdules The available albed light that hits the back f the mdule is directly related t the height (and tilt angle) f the mdule installed ver the surface. Chse the highest pssible Surface Reflectivity/Albed, such as a white rf r white grund surface cvering. Avid shading the back side f the mdule by the supprt rack. Elevate the mdules abve the munting surface as much as pssible. Fr flat grund/rftp installatin it s recmmended a minimum height f cm With tilted rftp installatin, ensure an apprpriate ventilatin n back t reduce an accumulatin f heat with adverse effects n the perfrmance. 4.9 Ensure that the mdules are grunded prperly: Under the terms f MegaCell, grunding f the mdule frame (if present) is nt required fr fault-free peratin. T reduce the risk f electric shck (e.g. due t static charge) as far as pssible, MegaCell recmmends t ask an experienced installer t carry ut a prper grunding. If an external lightning prtectin system has been already installed, the PV system has t be integrated in the existing lightning prtectin cncept by a specialist. Cuntry-specific standards and regulatins must be bserved. The grunding cnnectins between the mdules must be checked and accepted by a qualified electrician. Furthermre, the main grunding may nly be cnnected by a qualified electrician. In the USA and Canada, a grunding methd apprved by Underwriters Labratries (UL) is bligatry. T prvide prper grunding, an ptimal electrical cnductivity is required. Fr this purpse, grunding hles are prvided at the rear f the mdule frame (if present).these grunding hles are marked by a stamped grund symbl. Fr grunding we recmmend the Slklip grunding terminal with integrated thread cutting screw, (UL 467 apprved, UL number E69905), manufactured by Tyc Electrnics. Observe the additinal instructins at These grunding terminals accmmdate 4 mm² (AWG 12) and 6 mm² (AWG 10) stripped slid cpper wires. The wires must nt be cut, ntched r scratched. N further preparatin is required. V1 April

12 Installatin guide slar mdules Munting f grunding terminal n frame The grunding terminal must be placed n the frame in such a way that the screw tuches the grunding hle. Using a screwdriver, install the screw int the grunding hle until its head is flush with the base and the base is flush with the frame. Then, turn the screw anther quarter r half turn. The thread-cutting screw shuld be trqued by 20.4 lb in and 24,8 lb in (2.3 and 2.8 Nm). Grund wire placement Insert the cable int the wire slt. Then push in the wire n bth ends int the slt. (The wire slt will cause the wire t be slightly curved as shwn.) The slider must be engaged (slider cvers the base). Using cable clamps, mve the slider ver the base until it cvers the base. This terminates the wire. T pen the slider a sltted screwdriver can be used. V1 April

13 Installatin guide slar mdules 4.10 Ensure cmprehensive fire prtectin: The installatin f n-rf systems may influence the fire safety f a building. Imprperly installed systems can present even mre f a danger in the case f fire. Therefre, the mdules f an n-rf system must always be installed ver a fire-resistant surface. As the mdule is nt regarded as explsin-prf it must nt be installed near inflammable gases and vaprs e.g. clse t gas cntainers, painting installatins r gasline statins. Furthermre, the mdule must nt be installed next t pen fire and flammable materials. 5. MECHANICAL INSTALLATION Use always structures and materials specifically develped and certified fr PV mdules installatin. Avid shading the back side f the mdule by the supprt rack The minimum distance between tw fixed mdules fr linear thermal expansin f the mdule frames shuld be 5 mm. Nevertheless, the recmmended distance between tw mdules is 20 mm t allw wind circulatin, in rder t reduce pressure lads and imprve mdule ventilatin. The PV mdule shuld nt be munted in such a way that the drain hles f the mdule can becme blcked. MegaCell PV mdules are suitable fr mechanical munting bth in prtrait and landscape rientatin. In chsing the rientatin, please keep in mind the internal PV mdule by-pass dide cnfiguratin t ensure the ptimum electrical behavir frm any ptential shading ver the mdules. Galvanic crrsin can ccur between the aluminum frame f the PV mdule and the munting hardware if such hardware is cmpsed f dissimilar metals, especially in harsh envirnments such as high humidity. In these cases, t prevent crrsin, neprene tape, PVC washers r stainless steel washers shuld be placed between the PV mdule frame and the supprt structure. Additinally, all mdule supprt structures used t supprt PV mdules at crrect tilt angles shuld be wind and snw lad rated by apprpriate lcal and civil Directives prir t installatin. NOTICE: D nt disassemble the PV mdule and d nt remve, drill r mdify the frame in any way, as this will invalidate the warranty. Please cntact the MegaCell Technical Service if mdule munting prcedure is nt clear. 5.1 Mdules with frame Installatin using pressure clamps may be executed alng bth sides f the mdule frame accrding t fllwing instructins. 14 Installatin guide slar mdules The bligatry psitin f the clips alng the frame depends n which side f the mdule is used fr the installatin. Nte that n bth sides f the mdule the pressure clamps always shuld be munted in a symmetric psitin with respect t the center line fr a prper lad distributin. Clamps must be installed accrding t the manufacturer s specific instructins. D nt apply excessive pressure n the frame such that the frame defrms. MegaCell recmmends a trque f apprximately 10 Newtn meter [Nm], but refer t the clamp manufacturer fr specific hardware and trque requirements. Fr a safe and effective installatin f MegaCell framed mdules, the lengths fr the pressure clamps are strngly recmmended is nt less than 50 mm fr x 156 mm cell mdules. The minimum recmmended clamp thickness is 2,5 mm The clamps shuld have cntact nly with the mdule frame and, t avid shadwing effects and pssible damage, shuld nt verlap nt r ver the mdule glass. D nt install the mdules with pressure clamps munted ut f the specified areas, therwise the mdule mechanical resistance may be affected. Use f unauthrized laminate clamps will render the prduct and perfrmance warranty vid 5.2 Frameless mdules The use f frameless MegaCell mdules requires frameless munting system that grabs the edge f the mdule with a pressure clamp that is lined with rubber pads (EPDM, etc). The clamps must verlap frm the edge f the mdule by at least 10mm but shuld avid shading the cells in the mdule. The applied trque used t attach the clamps t the mdule/racking shuld refer t the mechanical design standard fr the specific blt in use. Fr 4 pint munting, 4 munting clamps shuld be lcated as described n paragraph 5.4 Depending n lcal snw and wind cnditins, mre than 4 clamps may be needed t ensure that the mdules can withstand the expected lad. Fr lads larger than 4000Pa (50psf), ensure that each clamp has a minimum length f 120mm. D nt use clamps with a length smaller than 80mm unless apprved by MegaCell. When installing mdules in an array, please allw fr a minimum lateral air gap f at least 10mm between the expsed edges f the adjacent mdules t accunt fr thermal expansin and cntractin f PV system elements in the field. 5.3 Frameless mdules: cntinuus munting (Carprts, BIPV, etc.) Fr a cntinuus munting system where the entire perimeter f the mdule is used, the munting surface that cntacts the mdule shuld: Be a rubber material (such as EPDM, etc.) n all surfaces making cntact with the mdule. 15 Installatin guide slar mdules Firmly clamp and hld the entire perimeter f the mdule, n bth the frnt and back f the mdule. The mdule shall be fully supprted by at least 10mm frm the edge n all sides f the mdule. Any shading r cvering f the cells n bth sides in the mdule must be avided 5.4 Clamping areas and maximum lad applicable Nte: Pay attentin t the maximum lad-bearing capacity f the mdules, with cnsideratin f wind and snw lad znes, the terrain categry and the height f the building. 6. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION D nt cnnect r discnnect mdules under lad! Danger! Risk f serius injury r death frm electric shck r electric arc flash. The slar mdules are designed fr use in PV systems f applicatin class A and are apprved fr peratin in systems with dangerus direct current (mre than 120 V DC in accrdance with EN 61730) and pwer. PV mdules f this applicatin class are apprved fr peratin in installatins with unrestricted access. BiSn series mdules frm MegaCell, which are qualified under EN and have been prperly installed, meet the requirements f prtectin class II. V1 April

16 Installatin guide slar mdules 6.1 Electrical Cnnectins Never pen the cnnectin bx! The mdules are already fitted with all necessary wires and cnnectrs. CAUTION: System design shuld cnsider the ptential increased pwer utput (Pmax) and current (Isc) due t the mdules bifacial abilities. Additinal pwer and currents beynd the STC rating are pssible. See the Electrical Specificatins n the data sheet fr electrical parameters in presence f albed. All prtectins, wiring, equipment ratings, and inverters shuld be sized accrdingly the prduct ratings, maximum expected utput and required prtectin factrs. 6.2 Ensure crrect wiring: Only cnnect mdules with the same rated current in series and mdules with the same rated vltage in parallel. The mdules may nly be perated at the allwable system vltage; peratin at a higher vltage is nt recmmended. The integrated cnnectin cables are UV resistant. The cnductr crss-sectin f the cnnectin cables is 4 mm². Fr wiring, the cnnectin cables are fitted with prefabricated cnnectrs, which are prtected against reverse plarity. Keep the ttal area f all cnductr lps as lw as pssible in rder t reduce the vltages due t indirect lightning strikes. Always carry ut a careful final check f the wiring prir t cmmissining the generatr. If the measured pen circuit vltage diverges frm the default value, a wiring errr has ccurred. Check fr crrect plarity. Merge the cnnectrs tgether crrectly: cnnectrs may nly merged tgether when dry. Als make sure that a gap-free cnnectin is pssible and t respect maximum system vltage calculated at the expected lwer perating temperature When cnnecting the mdules in parallel, a crrespnding vercurrent prtectin must be used. This can be achieved with direct current fuses, which prhibit return currents greater than 15 A. Furthermre, the cnnectin requirements and design regulatins f the inverter manufacturer must be bserved. With multi rws structure, cnnect hrizntal series f mdules t different MPPT t reduce lsses due t mismatch n reflected light n back side 6.3 Only use suitable materials: The system may nly be wired using special slar wires and suitable cnnectrs. It is very imprtant that all necessary materials are in a flawless electrical and mechanical cnditin. Only use single cre wires and V1 April

Fr further cnnectins f the mdules nly apprpriate cables with a minimum cnductr crss-sectin f 4 mm² must be used. 6.4 Prtect the wires frm adverse envirnmental effects: Only use UV-resistant cable ties fr the attachment f the wires t the munting system. Prtect the expsed wire frm pssible damage, e.g. by ruting it in plastic tubes. Avid direct expsure t sunlight. IMPORTANT : the Isc and Uc values specified n the mdule with reference t the STC cnditins are nrmally exceeded during nrmal peratin due t pssible higher irradiatin than standard 1000W/m 2 and als thanks t the bifacil. Fr this reasn, refers t the data sheet f mdules and t the installatin system t determine the rated vltage values f cnductrs, fuse values and the size f cntrl systems cnnected t the PV mdule utput 7. MAINTENANCE OF MODULES MegaCell recmmends t inspect the installatin n a regular basis with fllwing minimum maintenance: Check the electrical and mechanical cnnectins t verify that they are clean, secure and undamaged; Check that munting hardware, terminal screws and grunding cmpnents are tightly secured with n crrsin; Check transitin impedances f the ptential equalizatin; Check that mdules are nt shaded by vegetatin r any unwanted bstacles; CAUTION D nt tuch live parts f cables and cnnectrs; Use apprpriate safety equipment (insulated tls, insulating glves, etc.) when handling mdules; If any prblem with the system r individual mdule arises, have them investigated by a cmpetent specialist; Replacement mdules must be the same type f thse t be replaced; Mdules generate high vltage when expsed t sunlight. Please cver bth the frnt and rear surface f mdules with an paque nn scratch material when repairing. Repairing wrks must be perfrmed by specialized and prperly trained persnnel nly; NOTICE: Fllw the maintenance instructins fr all cmpnents used in the system, such as supprt frames, charge regulatrs, inverters, batteries etc. V1 April

18 Installatin guide slar mdules 8. CLEANING MODULES Usually, the mdules are autmatically cleaned by rain. In the case f severe cntaminatin, we recmmend cleaning with plenty f water with a lw lime cntent and withut cleaning agents. Please d nt use a nzzle attachment, and ensure that nly mderate water pressure is used. Using cleaning prducts and scratching cleaning devices will damage the special anti-reflective cating and render the prduct and perfrmance guarantees vid. Under n circumstances may cntaminants be scratched r rubbed ff withut misture. Damage t the highly efficient antireflective surface may change the visual appearance f the mdule surface and result in decreased perfrmance. Use f autmatic cleaning machines fr slar energy systems is at yur wn risk, and is nt authrized by MegaCell in any way. 9. LIABILITY AND REVISION LEVEL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS If any f the instructins given in the user infrmatin are nt adhered t, MegaCell will nt guarantee the availability and functinality f the mdules.
