This Prduct Safety Alert explains the issue and the steps being taken t rectify the situatin. Prblem Descriptin Rckwell Autmatin has determined that a hazard may be created thrugh the imprper use and applicatin f the Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breakers.

2 Page 2 Such a hazard may be created when a Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breaker is imprperly adjusted beynd the end f the calibrated prtin f the scale (see pht belw) and several mtr start cnditins are attempted in series withut any time delay between mtr starts. Such simultaneus cnditins may cause an internal shrt circuit t ccur within the Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breakers, resulting in the creatin f a hazard t bth persnnel and equipment. End f calibrated prtin f the scale Un-calibrated prtin f the scale, n adjustment settings allwed

3 Page 3 Prblem Crrectin Effective immediately, all devices listed belw under Prduct Identificatin shuld have the fllwing field mdificatins perfrmed. Inspect all installed prduct t make sure that the devices are nt adjusted beynd the end f the calibrated prtin f the adjustment scale. In the event that a device is adjusted beynd the end f the calibrated prtin f the adjustment scale re-adjust the device t be within the calibrated prtin f the adjustment scale. In the event that the installed and prperly adjusted circuit breaker des nt prvide the apprpriate verlad prtectin setting, replace the existing device with a new unit that prvides the apprpriate verlad current range. Add an additinal instructin sheet inside the cartn bxes f all Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breakers that are in inventry. If there is cncern that a user r maintenance persn may, in the future, set the dial beynd the calibrated prtin f the adjustment scale, then please apply a self-adhesive label near the adjustment scale directly n the Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breakers that are either installed r in inventry. This label will clearly shw that the device shuld nt be set beynd the calibrated prtin f the adjustment scale. Instructins fr label installatin will be included in the mdificatin kit. Rckwell Autmatin will prvide custmers with a mdificatin kit beginning in January, 2005 (Cat. N. 140M-MK1) that includes the additinal instructin sheet as well as the self-adhesive label alng with clear instructins n hw t apply the label. Rckwell Autmatin has mdified all present inventries and has implemented changes t the prductin f frame sizes C, D and F f the Bulletin 140M Mtr Prtectin Circuit Breakers (as well as all starters that use these circuit breakers) t include the abve prduct mdificatins. Rckwell Autmatin will prvide custmers, upn request, with Anti-Tamper Shields at n charge. The Anti-Tamper Shields (Cat. N. 140M-C-CA) prvide prtectin against inadvertent adjustment f the current setting.

Each ntified custmer shuld take the fllwing actins: Read the Prduct Safety. Identify any prduct in inventry r n equipment that is subject t this Prduct Safety Alert and take actins as described in Prblem Crrectin. Request a Bulletin 140M mdificatin kit (Cat. N. 140M-MK1) frm the Rckwell Autmatin help line: It is imprtant that all custmers cntinue t use lckut/tag ut prcedures while wrking n equipment. We appreciate yur immediate cperatin in this matter.
