5 Frmatting Figures 1. Original figures r ther artwrk shuld be submitted with the manuscript whenever pssible. Fr infrmatin n reprinting a figure frm anther surce, see Obtaining Permissins. 2. Use nly 1 pint (0.014 in. [0.35 mm]) r thicker lines smaller lines will nt reprduce well. 3. Figures t be reprduced in black and white shuld use patterns r shapes t distinguish sectins instead f clring and shading. Figures t be reprduced in clr shuld have tuching clrs that differ significantly s that there can be n cnfusin in understanding the data. (Nte that papers are published in clr as part f the ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference Papers dwnlad and in black and white in ASHRAE Transactins.) 4. Each figure shuld have a brief legend r descriptive labels, as apprpriate. Any text included in a figure (except the figure captin) shuld be embedded as part f the image file and nt cntained in a separate text bx that is nt part f the image file. 5. Prvide dual units fr all measurements, preferably as tw fi 6. All figures must be prvided t ASHRAE as individual TIF (preferred) r EPS files in either CMYK mde (fr clr) r Grayscale mde (fr black and white) saved at high reslutin (600 dpi r greater) and at least 4 in. (102 mm) size r greater. See Cnverting Graphics Created in Excel r Wrd fr instructins n graphic cnversin. Figure files shuld be clearly labeled (i.e., Figure1.tif, Fig2.tif, Fig3-2, etc.). Multiple-part fi such as a fi with parts (a) and (b), must be submitted as ne fi with all parts included. 7. Every figure must be referenced in the text by name/number, where Figure is capitalized (e.g., as shwn in Figure 2. ). 8. Figures must be numbered cnsecutively as they appear in the text. 9. Prepare a list f captins fr figures and place it at the end f the manuscript (this applies t papers nly; it is nt applicable fr bk prjects).

6 Frmatting Tables 1. All table titles shuld be descriptive but cncise. 2. Original tables shuld be submitted with the manuscript whenever pssible. Fr infrmatin n reprinting a table frm anther surce, see Obtaining Permissins. 3. Titles appear abve the tables, and every majr wrd in the title is capitalized. 4. Number tables cnsecutively and in the rder they are mentined in the text. 5. Tables used in the manuscript shuld nt be image files but shuld be alterable tables (such as thse created in Wrd, Excel, Framemaker, InDesign, etc.). 6. Use nly 1 pint (0.014 in. [0.35 mm]) r thicker lines smaller lines will nt reprduce well. 7. Vertical and hrizntal lines shuld be avided except t delineate the tp and bttm f a table and t separate the heading rw frm the data, unless lines are therwise necessary fr clarity r rganizatin f the data. 8. Label each clumn with a heading and include units f measurement and ther necessary qualifying infrmatin. Units shuld be set ff with a cmma (e.g., Velcity, m/s ). 9. Prvide dual units fr all measurements. 10. Every table must be referenced in the text by name/number, where Table is capitalized (e.g., as prvided in Table 5 ).

7 Units f Measurement ASHRAE plicy requires dual units f measurement inch-pund (I-P) and Internatinal System f Units (SI). Yu are required t prvide dual units when submitting manuscripts; ASHRAE staff will nt cnvert units fr yu. Sme guidelines are as fllws: 1. The units used in calculating the wrk being reprted shall be listed first with the alternate system f units fllwing in parentheses. 2. Always spell ut all units when they are used withut a number. 3. D nt mix symbls and names in the same expressin. 4. D nt express plurals by adding an s measurement. 5. D nt use perids with units f EXCEPTION: in. fr inch 6. Leave a space between the numerical value and the unit f measurement. EXCEPTION: There is n space between number and degree f plane angle r degrees f temperature (45, 62 F, 20 C) r the number and the percent symbl (5%) 7. L is the symbl fr liter, nt lwercase ell r script ell. 8. Centi- is nt an acceptable SI prefi and the use f cm shuld be avided. 9. Fr currency, include the mnetary unit f the cuntry where the research is based fllwed by the U.S. dllar cnversin in parentheses.

8 Frmatting Equatins Each signifi equatin r frmula shuld be displayed n a separate line. Center equatins and place cnsecutive equatin numbers fl right in parentheses. EXAMPLE: a 2 + b 2 = f 2 (1) where a 2 = apples b 2 = bananas f 2 = fruit salad If an equatin requires mre than ne line, break it befre an peratinal sign, and align the peratinal signs n the left. 9 Bk Publicatin Prcess Mst bks are the result f an ASHRAE research prject. A subcmmittee may be designated t handle the review prcess f a cmmittee-spnsred prject, using cmmittee members r ther persns with expertise in the area f cncern. The ASHRAE submittal, review, and publicatin prcess prceeds as fllws: 1. The authr indicates intent t submit a manuscript t Special Publicatins and receives the. 2. The authr prepares the manuscript, including artwrk, accrding t this Authrs Manual and submits the manuscript t Special Publicatins (see Bk Submissin Guidelines). 3. The cgnizant ASHRAE Technical Cmmittee selects qualified reviewers. 4. Reviewers send reviews and cmments t the authr. 5. The authr revises the manuscript and/r rebuts cmments and prvides a revised manuscript r rebuttal t the cgnizant Technical Cmmittee. 6. Reviewers cmplete an additinal review. 7. The review prcess cntinues until the manuscript is accepted r rejected fr publicatin by the cgnizant Technical Cmmittee. 8. After the manuscript is apprved fr publicatin, the authr submits a final Micrsft Wrd file and separate figure files electrnically t Special Publicatins, and the authr is infrmed f a tentative publicatin schedule. 9. Special Publicatins editrs edit the manuscript fr grammar, punctuatin, clarity, and cnsistency with ASHRAE plicies, as well as cmpleteness f parts. It is then put int pages, with the figures and tables incrprated. 10. The editrs send a PDF prf t the authr, ften including queries that require respnses frm the authr. The authr prfreads the manuscript and returns replies t the editrs queries within a mutually agreed upn (hpefully shrt) timeframe. 11. The bk is published and ffered fr sale in the ASHRAE Bkstre as bth the physical, printed bk and a PDF available fr dwnlad. 12. The authr receives a cmplimentary cpy f the published bk.

10 Paper Publicatin Prcess Technical Paper and Cnference Paper submittal, review, and publicatin activity is crdinated by the ASHRAE Cnference Prgram Administratr. The papers publicatin prcess prceeds as fllws: 1. The authr indicates intent t submit a paper t the ASHRAE Cnference Prgram Administratr and receives instructins and the. 2. The authr prepares the paper, including artwrk, accrding t the Authrs Manual and the Authr s Template fr Technical Papers r the Authr s Template Cnference Papers. 3. The authr uplads the paper thrugh the applicable website as indicated in the Technical Papers Submissin Requirements and Cnference Papers Submissin Requirements. 4. The ASHRAE Cnference Prgram Administratr selects qualifi reviewers. 5. The reviewers carefully review the paper and submit reviews nline. 6. The authr receives reviews and cmments. The authr revises the paper and/r rebuts the cmments and uplads a revised paper r rebuttal. 7. The reviewers are ntified that a revised paper requires additinal review. 8. The review prcess cntinues until the paper is accepted r rejected fr publicatin. 9. After the paper is accepted, the authr uplads the fi paper thrugh the applicable website in the apprpriate frmat as indicated in the Technical Papers Submissin Requirements and Cnference Papers Submissin Requirements. 10. The accepted paper is scheduled fr presentatin at an ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference r a Specialty Cnference. 11. ASHRAE staff editrs edit and frmat the Technical Paper and send a PDF t the authr, wh prfreads the paper and returns respnses t the editrs queries by the supplied deadline, r staff editrs scan the Cnference Paper fr adherence t the Authr s Template fr Cnference Papers and the authr addresses any nted errrs and prvides a revised PDF by the supplied deadline. 12. After the cnference editrs may send the authr f a Technical Paper cmments and questins generated at an ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference. The authr returns respnses t the editrs. 13. Cnference Papers are published as final PDFs n the ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference Papers dwnlad, Technical Papers are available as preprint PDFs n the ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference Papers dwnlad and published with the questins and cmments and authrs respnses in ASHRAE Transactins, and papers fr Specialty Cnferences are published as PDFs n flash drives r dwnlads fr the individual cnferences.

11 Bk Submissin Guidelines The fllwing materials are required fr bk manuscript submissin: 1. The cmplete manuscript in Micrsft Wrd and the figures prvided as separate TIF r EPS files saved at high reslutin. Tables shuld be editable and NOT submitted as images. 2. A laser printut f the cmplete manuscript including text, tables, and graphics. 12 Technical Papers Submissin Requirements Technical Papers mst ften reprt n ASHRAE-spnsred research and unslicited research in HVAC&R technical areas. All Technical Papers underg critical, duble-blind peer review by three r mre cmpetent specialists t ensure high quality f cntent. A paper must be accepted by three reviewers t be apprved fr an ASHRAE Winter r Annual Cnference. The Technical Paper review activity is crdinated by the ASHRAE Cnference Prgram Administratr, wh can be cntacted if yu have any questins during the paper submissin and review prcess. File submissin is dne nline via Manuscript Central. Instructins fr uplading files t Manuscript Central are available in the Instructins & Frms sectin f that website. The Technical Paper submissin requirements are as fllws: 1. Uplad an Agreement t Publish frm that is signed by every authr. 2. Dwnlad the Authrs Template fr Technical Papers fr a Micrsft Wrd file t use when writing the paper; als see an example paper. 3. Typed manuscripts fr Technical Papers must nt exceed 30 duble-spaced pages (including references and tables) and can cntain a maximum f 12 figures. Dual units f measurement shuld be included in the text, tables, and figures. See Dcument Frmatting fr additinal requirements. Uplad the paper as a Micrsft Wrd file fr review. Authrs shuld NOT identify themselves in manuscript fi t enable reviewers t maintain a blind review. 4. Cnference Papers presented at Specialty Cnferences reprt n specific technical areas within HVAC&R, depending n the cnference. All Cnference Papers underg single-blind review by tw r mre reviewers t ensure high quality f cntent. A paper must be accepted by tw reviewers t be apprved fr a cnference. The Cnference Paper review activity is crdinated by the ASHRAE Cnference Prgram Administratr, wh can be cntacted if yu have any questins during the paper submissin and review prcess. File submissin is dne nline via Cnference Exchange using the link prvided fr each individual cnference. The Cnference Paper submissin requirements are as fllws: 1. Uplad an abstract fr review. The abstract must be accepted befre the paper can be submitted. When yu uplad yur abstract yu will be assigned an ID# fr yur submissin (ne ID# fr bth the abstract and the paper). 2. Upn acceptance f the abstract, submit the paper based ff f the accepted abstract. Cnference Papers must nt exceed eight single-spaced pages in length (including references, tables, and figures) and must include an authr nte at the bttm f page 1. Uplad the Cnference Paper as a PDF with yur assigned ID# as the file name. 16 Heading Level Samples PERFORMANCE EVALUATION FUNCTION The perfrmance f any air-cnditining system depends n tw factrs: a. thermal cmfrt b. energy cnsumptin Thermal Cmfrt Secnd Level First Level The mst imprtant variables that influence the cnditin f thermal cmfrt are air temperature, water vapr pressure in ambient air, relative air velcity, mean radiant temperature, activity level (heat prductin in the bdy), thermal resistance f the clthing, and purity f the air. Fanger (1970) defined a thermal sensatin index by cnsidering air temperature, water vapr pressure in ambient air, relative air velcity, mean radiant temperature, activity level, and thermal resistance f the clthing. PMV is the thermal sensatin index given by Fanger (1970) and is internatinally standardized. It is easy t use PMV when cntrlling an air-cnditining system because PMV is an index f human thermal sensatin with ne value fr all seasns and is effective fr all temperatures that are neither extremely high nr extremely lw. PMV ranges frm 3 (cld) t +3 (ht). When PMV is zer, then thermal sensatin will be neutral, i.e., neither cld nr ht. Bradly speaking, when PMV appraches zer then thermal cmfrt increases. The first term n the right-hand side f Equatin 14 indicates the mass f misture in the incming air, which cmes in cntact with the evapratr wall, and the mass f misture in the utging air. The humidity f the incming air is calculated frm a psychrmetric chart with the help f the secnd-rder curve-fitting methd. The multiplying factr, (1 b), crrespnds t the bypass factr f the evapratr. The secnd term amunts t mass f misture in the incming air bypassed thrugh the evapratr and the mass f misture in the utging air. The multiplying factr b crrespnds t the bypass factr f the evapratr. Authrs shall nt submit manuscripts that are r will be cnsidered fr publicatin by ther rganizatins r publishers. It is the authr s respnsibility t secure and transmit t ASHRAE written permissins fr use f prprietary infrmatin and/r cpyrighted materials appearing in the manuscript prir t its submissin. (See Obtaining Permissins.) ASHRAE requires previusly unpublished papers in all its publicatins. Prir publicatin f papers in publicatins that are indexed r widely available frm retrievable surces (including ASHRAE Jurnal and Science and Technlgy fr the Built Envirnment) usually precludes cnsideratin fr presentatin at Sciety cnferences r fr publicatin in ASHRAE Transactins.

In Excel, select the chart r graph t be cnverted. In Wrd, select the image t be cnverted. (Please be sure all elements are gruped tgether befre cpying.) If using Excel 2010 r Wrd 2010 r newer: Frm the Hme tab, select Cpy. If using Excel 2007 r Wrd 2007: Frm the menu ptins select Cpy. If using an lder versin f Excel: Hld dwn the Shift key and frm the menu ptins select Edit. Chse Cpy Picture frm the drp-dwn Edit menu. Select As shwn when printed, then OK. If using an lder versin f Wrd: Frm Wrd s menu ptins, chse Edit then Cpy. 2. Minimize Excel r Wrd (dn t clse it). 3. Open Micrsft PwerPint. If using PwerPint 2007 r 2010 r 2013: Delete the tw bxes shwing n the blank page that pens. Frm the PwerPint menu ptins, under the Design tab, fr 2007 select Page Setup and fr 2010 r 2013 select Slide Size then Custm Slide Size. Set the width fr 24 in. and the height fr 24 in. and chse OK. Frm the PwerPint menu ptins (under the Hme tab fr 2010 and 2013), select the drp-dwn arrw belw the Paste buttn and select Paste Special then Picture (Enhanced Metafile). Please make sure all elements were cpied ver int PwerPint. If using an lder versin f PwerPint: Chse Blank Presentatin, then OK. Chse the icn shwing a cmpletely blank slide (r page); chse OK. Under the File menu ptins, chse Page Setup. In Page Setup, set width at 36 in. and height at 24 in. fr landscape layut and set width at 24 in. and height at 36 in. fr prtrait layut. Chse OK. Frm the PwerPint menu ptins, chse Edit, Paste Special. Chse Picture (Enhanced Metafile). 4. Select the image yu pasted int PwerPint. Small squares will appear n all fur crners. These are handles. Use ne f the crner handles t stretch the image t fill the page, but be sure t hld dwn the shift key as yu stretch the handle s that the image prprtins will remain intact. D nt stretch the image ff the page. 5. Under the File menu ptin, chse Save As. If using PwerPint 2013, chse Brwse and navigate t the desired lcatin fr saving the file. 6. In the Save As dialg windw, chse TIFF Tag Image File Frmat (*.tif) frm the Save As Type drp-dwn list. Give the file a name and click Save.
