1 Instructins fr authrs interested in sending articles fr publicatin in Mnetaria CEMLA is the assciatin f central banks f Latin America and the Caribbean. Its activities include publishing scientific and academic jurnals and wrking paper series in bth English and Spanish. In particular, CEMLA receives cntributins fr its ecnmic jurnals Mnetaria and Bletín; as well as fr its Research Paper series. Mnetaria has an external Editrial Cmmittee, which is supprted in its wrk by an Editrial Bard and a Technical Cmmittee, fr papers reviewing and selecting the cntent f each issue. In general, CEMLA s publicatins are aimed at central bank staff and fficials at similar institutins, as well as researchers and prfessrs interested in tpics related t mnetary thery and plicy, financial stability, macrecnmics, applied ecnmetrics, payments systems, the internatinal ecnmy, capital flws and ther such subjects. All papers t be cnsidered fr publicatin by CEMLA in Mnetaria must cmply with the characteristics and cnditins listed belw. 1. Length Papers submitted fr Mnetaria: frm 25,000 t 50,000 characters, including ntes and bibligraphy. 2. General editrial rules The title and subheadings must be n mre than 10 wrds lng. Fllwing the title must be include the name f the authr r authrs in the frmat and rder expected t be published. In a ftnte, please include yur psitin, department r area f wrk and yur affiliated institutin at the mment f writing the article. If yu are n lnger in the same institutin, please include a nte. In the ftnte include an ; if there is mre than ne authr, please include at least ne (wh will be cnsidered as the f the crrespndent authr). If all s are included, please indicate wh the crrespndent authr is. Then, yu can add the acknwledgements r credits t the peple r institutins that help r supprt yu in the elabratin f the article. Finally, yu can mentin any legal disclaimer related t the article. Yu can review if yur institutin has a usual disclaimer fr cases like this. It is better t write the abstract nce the article has been finished, but it des nt mean that d it is less imprtant. In fact, a gd abstract is the best card f presentatin fr an article; it wuld mtivate the dwnlading and reading f it, r nt. It is recmmended t avid the use f abbreviatins and acrnyms. Abstract must be cncise and related t the facts described in the article. In general, a gd abstract must describe briefly: Instructins fr the authrs 1

2 the cntent f the article; the aim f the research (what yu want t slve, explain..., sme backgrund can be included); the used methds (techniques, mdels ); the main findings r results; a relevant bservatin (fr example, an exceptin); and the cnclusin, and if pssible, sme recmmendatin abut plicy r additinal research. The paper s subheadings must use the fllwing ntatin in rder t enable quick reference t each sectin. 1. Intrductin 2. Prir research 2.1. Data Articles submitted in Spanish must be written in internatinal Spanish. Given that these are internatinal publicatins, it is recmmended that authrs use a neutral tne when writing, i.e., avid reginalisms that may hinder the understanding f readers frm ther regins. Articles submitted in English shuld be written in American English. Only limited use f abbreviatins and acrnyms is recmmended. The first time a cncept, name f an institutin r a law, etc., that is later ging t be abbreviated r referred t by its acrnym is mentined, it shuld be accmpanied by said abbreviatin r acrnym in parenthesis alngside it. This cmbinatin shuld nt be repeated mre than nce in the text. Fr instance, the Center fr Latin American Studies (CEMLA) If the abbreviatin is included less than three times in the article, please cnsider t mit it, unless it is used in the same paragraph. 3. Supprt elements Tables and figures are supprt elements and shuld therefre nt be verused. It is nt recmmendable t include a table r graph and then fully explain it in the text, r include a table and a graph with the same data. In rder t nt verlad the article with such elements, they shuld be included in the rati f ne table r graph per 5,000 characters. Thus, a 30 page lng paper shuld have a maximum f 10 tables r graphs. The title shuld be a descriptive summary f the table s cntents, and the headings and names shuld ffer sufficient infrmatin fr it t be fully understd. The title shuld mentin all the units emplyed in the table and each clumn shuld use the same unit. Avid abbreviatins. If a table is very large, it is better t attach it at the end as an annex. As fr the frmat, it is requested that n mre than ne piece f infrmatin r paragraph be included per cell (in rder t facilitate the article s elabratin). The graphs shuld be simple, withut any effects r shading that make them difficult t understand. Instructins fr the authrs 2

3 Tables, graphs and diagrams shuld be numbered with this nmenclature. References within the text (it is recmmended that references be used fr all illustratins in the text, this makes reading and preparing the article easier) must be numbered with a cap case initial. Fr instance, the results f the regressin are summarized in Table 5. and nt in the fllwing/previus Table. Equatins shuld appear in italics, with their cnsecutive number in parenthesis n the left. It is imprtant t ensure all the variables are either defined in the text r in an annex. If yur mathematical apprach is very extensive, it is recmmended it be placed at the end as an annex. Ftntes are used t explain the text and shuld be brief. They shuld be numbered cnsecutively in superscript, withut punctuatin r parenthesis, after the punctuatin mark. 4. Bibligraphy It is recmmended that bibligraphic references be restricted t cases where riginal cncepts, cntributins r data f relevance t the pint are used. This will avid such references multiplying thrughut the text, interrupting its reading. When it is necessary t qute a wrk the fllwing ntatin shuld be used: Authr (year). If the reference is in parenthesis, the year shuld be written between cmmas, r between a cmma and semicln when including varius references. In such case, we strng recmmend rdering the varius references in chrnlgical rder. If the authr has several wrks frm the same year, a lwer-case letter shuld be added starting with the letter a immediately after the year. If there are mre than tw authrs in the reference, the abbreviatin et al. shuld be used after the first authr. The bibligraphy must mentin all the authrs hwever. Examples: Accrding t St and Salas (2005) mst variables Sme authrs have fund a direct relatin between bth factrs (Velarde, 1998a). The cmmn cnclusins f the latest research cnverge in relatin t (see, Smith, 1998; St and Salas, 2005; Vega et al., 2007c) Be sure t include the bibligraphical references f all the wrks referred t in the text and statistical bases. All bibligraphical references shuld appear in alphabetical rder at the end f the article. The surname f the first authr shuld cme first, fllwed by their name r initials between cmmas, then the next authr in nrmal rder and all the ther authrs until the last ne, which is fllwed by the year f publishing in parenthesis. If an authr has several wrks frm the same year, a lwer case letter shuld be placed immediately after the year, starting with the letter a. It is imprtant t mentin that, in English, the wrds in headings shuld begin with capital letters, except in the case f articles, prepsitins and cnjunctins. Bibligraphic references shuld be cmpleted as fllws, accrding t the type f publicatin: Bk: The title f the wrk shuld be written in italics withut cmmas after the name f the authr. Preparing the submissin Papers shuld be sent attached t an in a Wrd r RTF file in letter size frmat (21.5 cm x 28 cm), duble spaced and in ne clumn with margins f at least 2.5 cm. Tables and graphs shuld be sent in Excel r Wrd files (nt as images) alng with the data fr elabrating them. If the wrk cntains equatins r symbls, a PDF file previusly checked by the authrs shuld als be attached t ensure the article is published crrectly. Each f the authrs shuld als attach the crrespnding frm fr sending articles available n each publicatin s web page. 6. Cnditins Authrship. The individuals presenting themselves as authrs shuld have the authrs rights fr their wrk and therefre the pwer t authrize its translatin (int Spanish, English r bth if necessary) and any changes t the wrk, as well as t make decisins regarding its publicatin. Data availability. Authrs make a cmmitment t having the data they used fr elabrating the wrk available at all times. License. Althugh authrs keep their authrs rights, they agree t grant CEMLA an exclusive license fr publishing their wrk in Spanish and English, in bth printed and electrnic frmats. They als agree t allw it t be added t any knwledge databases and indexes the Center has agreements with. Instructins fr the authrs 4

5 Sending the wrk fr peer-review refereeing. When authrs send their wrk t CEMLA they acknwledge that it has nt been submitted t cnsideratin r refereeing t any anther publicatin, be it a jurnal r fr inclusin in a bk r series. The authrs must nt send the wrk t any ther publicatin until they receive an answer frm CEMLA. If a wrk is accepted, after it has been published the authrs must submit a written request asking CEMLA fr permissin t publish it elsewhere. Editing agreement. CEMLA reserves the right t make the editrial changes it deems necessary (in particular, style, grammar, spelling, typgraphy and frmat) in accrdance with generally accepted standards and thse defined specifically fr the Center s publicatins. 7. Refereeing prcess fr Mnetaria The authr may receive suggestins frm the referees abut their article. The authr r authrs are free t accept r nt accept these suggestins, and, where applicable, make any changes prpsed by the referees. All cmmunicatin will be made thrugh CEMLA s Infrmatin Services Manager in rder t maintain the annymity f bth the referees and the authrs. The authrs are free t withdraw their article frm the refereeing prcess at any time, except after it has been accepted fr publishing. 9. Publicatin f the article Once the Editrial Cmmittee f Mnetaria has made its decisin n whether t publish an article, the authr will be ntified f the result. If the article has been accepted, the cmmunicatin will indicate the prbable publicatin date. Selectin f the cntent fr each jurnal issue is the prergative f the Editrial Cmmittee. Hwever, the criteria that the first t be accepted will als be the first t be published is applied as far as pssible. Instructins fr the authrs 5

6 After a wrk has been accepted and has passed thrugh the editrial prcess, cpies f the final versin will be sent fr review by the authrs. The nly crrectins that will be accepted are thse due t mistakes, errrs r missins resulting frm the jurnal s editrial prcess. Changes t the text such as deletins, substitutins r additins that alter the frmat f the article will nt be accepted under any circumstances.
