2 Overview Gals In this class, students will review simple machines t see hw they are used fr energy transference in mre cmplex machinery. Students will be using the Engineering Design Prcess n their many designs thrughut the class. Mst class activities are hands-n pprtunities t test their newly gained knwledge. Fr example, when learning abut criteria and cnstraints, testing and revisin, and brainstrming, they will wrk tgether in small grups t create fairly cmplex Rube Gldberg machines. Additinally, when learning abut varius frces, they will apply their knwledge t bridge design and cnstructin in rder t determine which bridge design is the mst rbust. During the Spring Semester, students will apply the knwledge gained in class and the Engineering Design Prcess t build smething lasting fr the schl. Students will learn abut the fllwing: Energy transference and simple machines Perspective, rthgraphic, ismetric and CAD drawings Tensin, cmpressin, trque and shear, hw these frces interact with structures, and design basics used when dealing with these frces. Varius materials and fasteners available, the strengths and weaknesses f each, and hw t chse the best material and fasteners fr yur design. Varius tls, including basic and pwer tls, necessary safety instructins, and hw/when t use them. The Engineering Design Prcess Class Evaluatin Because we will be wrking with many different tls, fasteners and materials the pprtunity fr pssible injury increases dramatically. I will expect exceptinal classrm behavir. Students will be asked t leave if they are gfing arund, interrupting r nt fllwing safety directins while in class. Class participatin and cnduct will be 50% f their grade. The final grade will be an average f bth Fall and Spring Semesters. 3 Class Plicies It is in the student s best interest t avid absences. Missing mre than 3 classes may make it difficult fr the student t fllw the material. If the student has multiple absences, and he r she is struggling in class, a parent-teacher cnference may be necessary t determine hw t prceed. If a class wrk is missed, I will wrk with the student and student s parents t arrange a time utside f class t make up the wrk. Please be n time! If a student chses t bring such items ut during class, the device may be taken away and held until the end f class. It will be the student s respnsibility t retrieve it frm me after class. All hmewrk is due by the due dates listed n the syllabus. All make-up wrk shuld be finished and returned the week after receiving it. N wrk will be accepted after the last day f each semester. This is especially imprtant when brainstrming ideas as a grup. Ø IMPORTANT: Abve all else, safety is the first pririty. If a student s cnduct is cntinuusly disruptive r dangerus, perhaps they are nt ready t participate in this class until their maturity catches up with their interest. It is my gal t help the students retain their interest and mtivatin fr learning abut Engineering while keeping them and the ther students ut f harm s way.
