Expected Outcmes: COURSE EXPECTATIONS Mathematical cncepts such as gemetry, prprtin, and symmetry ften arise in analyses f artwrk, and many prminent artists explicitly incrprate mathematical ideas int their designs. This curse explres the relatinships between math and art, frm ancient times thrugh the present. We will discuss hw mathematics has been used as a tl by artists thrughut histry. This curse will fcus n visual arts in the area f: Fractins and Prprtins Equatins in Calder Mbiles Symmetry The Fibnacci Sequence Tessellatins and Transfrmatins 1

2 Scale Gemetry Perspective Grading Plicy: Students at Vista Charter Middle Schl are graded based n hw well they are able t demnstrate mastery f simple and cmplex cncepts/ideas as identified in cntent standards taught in the curse. Grading Criteria Students earn an A if they demnstrate advanced understanding f the cncepts and ideas taught in class. This means that students are able t master simple and cmplex cncepts and ideas f the standards assessed. Students must demnstrate the ability t make inferences and draw cnclusins t supprt an pinin using textual evidence. At this level, students are able t clearly reach the level f rigr f the standard. In math, students shuld clearly be able t prblem slve and explain the prcess f arriving at specific slutins while accurately using frmulas t accurately slve mathematical prblems. Students earn a B if they demnstrate prficient understanding f the cncepts and ideas taught in class. This means students are able t master simple cncepts and ideas and majrity f cmplex cncepts and ideas f the standards assessed. Students are able t meet the level f level f rigr required by the standard. In math, students shw evidence f accurate cmputatin and use f varius frmulas t slve mathematical prblems. Students earn a C if they demnstrate develping understanding f the cncepts and ideas taught in class. This means that students are able t master the simple cncepts f the standards assessed but nt the cmplex cncepts assessed. In math, students make sme errrs in arriving at accurate cmputatins and make sme errrs crrectly using varius frmulas t slve mathematical prblems. Students earn a D if they demnstrate sme understanding f simple cncepts and ideas f the standards assessed. Generally, students have nt demnstrated independent mastery f simple cncepts and ideas and need substantial help frm the teacher t reach the level f rigr required by the standard. Students earn an F if they d nt demnstrate any understanding f the simple cncepts and ideas f the standards taught in class and measured n the assessment. Even with help, students still have difficulty understanding simple cncepts and are nt able t reach the level f rigr required by the standard. All classwrk and hmewrk must be cmpleted each night, and is intended t supprt what students learn in class. Class assessments will take place apprximately every 3 weeks. 2

3 The grade f I (Incmplete) may nly be given when extended illness r ther unusual circumstances warrant giving the student additinal time t fulfill the curse wrk. A grade f I (Incmplete) must be changed within six weeks f the next semester, r the grade becmes an F. Final grades will be determined n yur: Classwrk Hmewrk Quarterly Assessment (4 per year) Class Assessments (apprximately every 3 weeks) Wrk Habits: Excellent (80%-100%) Satisfactry (65-79%) Unsatisfactry (64% and belw) Texts: n/a Materials: Students are required t bring the fllwing materials t class daily: 1 Cmpsitin ntebk (nn-spiral) Sketchbk (prvided) Sctch tape Glue sticks Ruler Scissrs 6 #2 pencils (if using mechanical, yu MUST supply yur wn lead) Erasers Clred Pencils (minimum 12 cunt) Hmewrk: Hmewrk, when given, is intended t build fluency, applicatin, review cncepts and knwledge taught in class r extend what was studied and taught in class. Students wh d nt cnsistently cmplete their hmewrk will nt be prepared fr weekly frmative assessments and may nt be eligible t participate in extra-curricular activities: sprts, field trips, dances, clubs, lunchtime activities, etc. N late wrk will be accepted. Participatin: All students will be expected t verbally participate in class in many different ways- individually, in pairs, small grup and whle grup. Plagiarism: Any student fund taking the wrk r ideas f thers and claiming it as their wn is cnsidered plagiarism. Any student fund respnsible fr plagiarism is subject t an autmatic F n the assignment r exam. Attendance: All students are expected t attend class daily. Shuld an absence ccur, students must prvide the main ffice with a nte frm a parent explaining the absence. Only absences due t medical appintments with a medical nte will be marked as an excused absence. All ther absences will be marked as an unexcused absence, unless authrized by the Principal. Once absences are marked E fr Excused n Pwer Schl, a student will be allwed t submit hmewrk r classwrk missed due t the absence. 3
