1 3: Cmmunity Gathering Space What: 2 part spatial sequence with gathering area fr varius sized grups Entry Zne Prvide an intrductin t the area by establishing a md and character and as well as separating the space frm the surrunding envirnment Gathering Space Create a flexible space fr students and faculty t assemble. The area must accmmdate an individual, a grup f 2-3, and a grup f 5-6. It needs t be cmfrtable during daylight hurs frm April thrugh Octber and n warm days thrugh the winter. Path This will link the tw spaces. It will create a sense f anticipatin and arrival. As yu mve alng the path yu will be given glimpses f the gathering space but yu will nt be able t see it fully until the jurney is cmpleted. The path shuld help t reinfrce the sense f separatin between the Gathering Space and the surrundings. Why: Architecture is mst successful when it creates an envirnment t enrich human experiences. This assignment creates a space t help develp and reinfrce the cmmunity f students and faculty by prviding an infrmal space fr chance and casual encunters. The design will incrprate a three-phase sequence t shape the ccupants experiences. Hw: 3 phase prcess 1. Site Analysis and Diagrams 2. Cncept Develpment with Parti and Preliminary Design 3. Final Design Yu will use a simple palette f light and frm t create yur space. The frms will be a single, neutral, undefined, generic material. The sizes and shapes f the architectural elements will be limited t simplify the decisin prcess. Yu will begin by wrking in teams t analyze the site. Then each student will develp their wn design based n their cncept and parti diagram. Yu will use varius drawings t develp and cmmunicate yur design. Parti diagram: a graphic representatin f the primary cncepts and frmal rganizatin f the design. They are typically shwn in plan view.

Prblem: Yu are t design a three-dimensinal spatial experience based n yur cncept, site analysis and the assignment requirements using the fllwing architectural elements. All vertical dimensins must be in 1 ft increments. Negative vlumes may nt extend mre than 4 feet belw grade. The tps and bttms f all elements must be flat, hrizntal surfaces, the sides must be vertical surfaces. Assume the structure is cnstructed f ne hmgeneus material. There are n ther materials available t yu, d nt cnsider surfaces t be landscaped. All surfaces are hard and finished. The site is flat and the apprach, entry, path, and mst f the gathering space must be n grade. Negative vlumes may be incrprated int the raised elements but d nt meet the requirement f ne negative vlume
4 Design Gals: The first gal is t create a unique and memrable experience that cnfrms t yur design cncept. In additin t that yu must meet the requirements described belw. The gathering space, which is yur destinatin, shuld be partially r cmpletely hidden frm yur view as yu apprach and enter the structure. Yur understanding f the space shuld grw ver time as yu mve thrugh the transitin space and alng the path. The gathering space shuld allw peple t ccupy it in grups f different sizes. Are there places t sit r lean? Hw d tw peple sit tgether? Make sure the space allws fr maximum usability. D nt allw ne persn t restrict the use f the entire space. The space shuld have a single entrance/exit and be the dead end destinatin. T leave yu will retrace the same path that yu used t enter. There shuld be an entry/transitin experience between the surrunding envirnment and the gathering space that invlves bth time and space. There shuld be a well develped path between the entry space and the gathering space that cntrls and enhances ur experience f the space. The path serves fr bth entrance and exit, evaluate it frm bth directins There shuld nt be any secndary gathering areas in the transitin space r path. Design these elements s that the user mves thugh them but des nt stay in them. The gathering space shuld have an easily identifiable shape as its basic plan shape (e.g. rectangle, circle, triangle) The gathering space shuld be apprximately 600 square feet in area. All mvement thrugh the space must be n a flat, grade level surface. N ramps r stairs may be used.
5 Prcess: 1. Prepare a detailed, careful site evaluatin and analysis. The site analysis must include all f the fllwing aspects: Site plan with prject bundaries Existing architectural features, buildings, and paved areas adjacent t yur site Existing landscape elements adjacent t yur site Patterns f light and shade bth at different times f day and different times f the year Existing circulatin patterns, bth frmal and infrmal. Als include a representatin f the intensity f use. Nise patterns Views frm the site and int the site Any ther features that yu identify as significant t the design prcess 2. Based n yur analysis and persnal gals develp a cncept fr yur design and a parti diagram that graphically describes yur design rganizatin. 3. Hw is yur experience enriched by disclsure develp elements t articulate and cntrl that sequence What can yu see that draws yu frward Hw is yur experience enriched by disclsure and surprise Hw d yu ccupy the space 4. Place the plan f yur design at a 60º/30º rientatin with the suth side n the 30 side. 5. Cnstruct a plan blique f the three-dimensinal space yu imagined. Cnstruct each element s ftprint. Extrude, depress r elevate each element 6. Overlay the designs and sketch alternative ideas. It is imprtant that yu generate a rich set f alternatives. 7. Overlay the design with a sheet f vellum, r draft n drawing paper fr the final versin fr the preliminary review. 8. Overlay the plan blique with vellum t cnstruct the shadws 9. Draw a final image with shadws Steps ne thrugh eight are fr the preliminary review after revising yur design based n feedback frm the review yu will prduce the fllwing drawings. 10. Cnstruct rthgraphic drawings f final design in pencil n drawing paper 11. Ink the lines using nly freehand techniques.
6 Requirements: Phase 1. Site Analysis Diagrams Diagrams are abstract representatin f general cnditins they are nt specific and are nt design slutins. Prepare diagrams f all site features, characteristics and cnsideratins Pedestrian patterns Vehicle patterns Sun path and angles, winter and summer Lines f sight frm site View f site frm paths and walkways Seasnal wind directins and strength Nise surces and magnitude Diagrams shuld typically use the plan view but sectins elevatins and ther views may be used as necessary. Use as many drawings as yu need. Infrmatin may be cmbined n a single drawing r each aspect may be shwn n a separate diagram. Wrk in any media r cmbinatin f media that yu chse including cllage. All text shuld be incrprated int the design Clr, if used, shuld cntribute t the cmmunicatin f the diagrams. Panel r panels as necessary, 24 x36 x1/2 maximum Presentatin must be unified and appear t be the wrk f a single individual Inventry yur skills t determine the mst efficient and effective delegatin f tasks. 7 Phase 2. Preliminary Presentatin These are prcess drawings. They shuld be accurate and cmplete t allw evaluatin f yur idea. D nt munt these drawings, yu will need t include them in yur final presentatin Cncept Descriptin: Include a verbal descriptin f yur cncept. The verbal descriptin shuld be n mre than 3 sentences. Parti Diagram: A simplified graphic f the basic idea f the frmal rganizatin f yur design. It shuld clearly identify the entry, path, and gathering space.
