Have a great summer and we lk frward t wrking with yu next year! Assignment specifics: 1. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is yur summer reading assignment. It is a highly acclaimed and cntrversial classic that deals with cmplex issues f identity, belnging, cnnectin, and alienatin. 2. Yu may either check ut the nvel frm ur textbk rm prir t the end f the schl year, r purchase a cpy frm a bk stre r buy a used ne nline. 3. Respnd t all questins in an insightful manner and make sure that yur wrk reflects yur wn vice. D nt frget: We are interested nly in yur unique perspective and interpretatins; n ne else s! In shrt, plagiarism will nt be tlerated. 4. Type all parts that require yu t use a separate sheet f paper. The remaining questins with answer spaces can be written in the packet. 3 ASSIGNMENT # 2: The Catcher in the Rye Character Pems (40 pts) Cmpse a series f fur pems and/r sngs in the vices f characters frm The Catcher in the Rye (listed belw). (Yu may want t imagine that yu have been hired t turn the nvel int a musical r even a mdern pera). Picture the character at a specific mment in the nvel. Imagine what he/she is thinking and feeling at that mment abut Hlden, abut that present time and place, abut his/her life. What is the character hping r fearing r regretting? What is the character lking at r hearing, and what des it cause him/her t think abut? The title fr each pem/sng shuld cntain the character s name and at least ne prepsitinal phrase indicating where r when that character is speaking (e.g. Hlden Caulfield in his rm at the Edmnt ). Be creative. The scene can extend beynd the literal settings f the nvel (e.g. D.B. in his jaguar n the way t visit Hlden ). The scene can ccur befre r after an actual mment in the nvel (e.g. Hrwitz in his cab after Hlden leaves ). 4 ASSIGNMENT # 3 Teaching Pster Prjects (100 pts) POSTER PROJECT FORMAT. Yur prject must satisfy ALL f the fllwing criteria: Prject is drawn r munted n psterbard. Rule lines (base, mid, and tp) have been drawn lightly in pencil with a ruler. Rule lines have been neatly and carefully erased after drawing materials have dried thrughly. Any material that has been cut ut is trimmed neatly and precisely. Straight edges are straight. Irrelevant backgrund is trimmed ut. Prjects are decrated clrfully with paint, clred pencils, felt-tip pens, crayn, pastels, r anther medium specifically apprved by the teacher. Prjects are illustrated with riginal artwrk, traced r cpied artwrk, graphic designs, r apprpriate phtgraphs cut frm magazines. Yur name must appear n the frnt f the prject, discreetly, but legibly, in small print. N wrds are misspelled. N punctuatin errrs are made. N capitalizatin errrs are made. N usage errrs are made. Watch ut fr prnun and verb errrs. A wise student wuld sketch all lettering r drawings lightly in pencil and prfread several times. A very wise student wuld enlist the aid f several prfreaders. POSTER PROJECT TOPICS. The purpse f these psters is t visually illustrate majr cncepts frm the wrk studied. In rder t receive a gd grade, yur pster prject must TEACH smething abut the wrk. Lking at yur pster shuld enlighten the viewer. CHOOSE ONE: 1. PLOT: Diagram the main plt and any subplts. Find a visual way t demnstrate and illustrate the varius cnflicts, turning pints, cnnectins between plt and subplt, and s n. Yu might als cnsider examining parallel r recurring events. 2. TIMELINE: Prepare an illustrated timeline f events in the wrk. Althugh the actual events may nt be revealed chrnlgically (by recllectin and flashback perhaps), remember t prprtin the length f the line t the ttal number f years the wrk cvers. Include illustratins r qutes at majr pints n the line. 3. MAJOR CHARACTER: Prepare a pster prtrait f ne f the majr characters. Include an illustratin f the character as described by the authr and include significant qutes frm the wrk which demnstrate the varius methds f characterizatin -- name, physical descriptin, what the character says, what the character des, hw ther characters react t yur character, etc. 4. CHARACTER COMPARISON: Prepare a pster cmparing and cntrasting tw f the majr characters wh can be analyzed as dubles and/r ppsites. Include an illustratin f each character as the authr describes them and include significant qutes frm the wrk which demnstrate the varius methds f characterizatin -- names, physical descriptins, what the characters say, what the characters d, hw ther characters react t yur characters, etc.

5 5. CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS: Make a cluster diagram shwing the relatinships f the characters t each ther. Include a sketch f each character r perhaps a specific bject assciated with each ne. Als include a characteristic saying r a significant qute abut each. Start with the main character(s) at the center. 6. CHARACTER SYMBOLS: Frequently, characters in a wrk are assciated with particular bjects which take n a symblic value. Prepare a chart shwing characters and apprpriate bjects, explaining hw the bject represents the character. If n bject is actually assciated with the character in the wrk, yu may chse an bject which yu think wuld be apprpriately symblic fr yur characters and explain yur chices. 7. SYMBOLIC RECIPES: Write and illustrate symblic recipes fr majr characters, events, and/r themes in the wrk. Remember t fllw recipe frmat fr ingredients and methd f preparatin, but think symblically. A cup f evil, nt a pund f flesh. 8. SETTINGS: Illustrate the majr settings, including descriptive qutes frm the wrk and indicating majr events that ccurred at each setting. If apprpriate, cnsider using a map frmat. 9. IMAGE STRANDS: Prepare a chart shwing specific examples f the majr image strands in the wrk, including qutes as apprpriate. Write a brief statement analyzing the effect f each image strand. (Hint: clrs, animals, nature, darkness and light, etc.) 10. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: Find several examples f varius figures f speech: hyperble, metaphr, simile, persnificatin, etc. Prepare a chart listing and illustrating yur examples. 11. SIGNIFICANT LINES: Select what yu cnsider t be the mst imprtant qute, qutes, r lnger passage in the wrk. Prepare a cllage which truly illustrates the meaning f the lines frm the wrk. Include the lines themselves and cite the page numbers.
