1 After Earth Saving Our Future Lessn Plan Fr Teachers: This lessn is designed fr use with several parts f this site: 1. Hme page and After Earth Saving the Future (link) 2. Take Actin Page (link) Objectives: 1. Students will be able t define science and explain the difference between science fictin and science. 2. Students will be able t list and discuss at least three pssible cnsequences f glbal change t ecsystems. Backgrund fr teachers: In this lessn, students explre the difference between science and fictin. In an era f instant and unregulated infrmatin dispersal, sme news stries (and many web sites) are mre fictin than fact. Fr students, distinguishing between fact and fictin is ften very difficult. Belw are three useful pages n the UC Berkeley Understanding Science website, which ffers many excellent additinal teaching resurces The Understanding Science site facilitates reviewing the nature and prcess f science as an aid t recgnizing misinfrmatin, disinfrmatin, and pseudscience. Have students pay particular attentin t the interactive flw chart Hw Science Wrks. Stating the prblem, reviewing the research f thers (including peer review) and the validity f cmputer mdeling as experimental methdlgy are all part f the scientific methd. Help students understand hw each f these elements fits int the mdel.
2 Overview: Directins are cntained in the bdy f the student activity sheets. First student are asked t lk up sme terms. Yu may prvide these r have students lk them up n the web and agree n them. Secnd, students explre current discveries f new species. Next students (in grups r individually) will research the ancestrs f the three species that present challenges fr the characters in After Earth. This culd be a hmewrk assignment r a research based class assignment. Alternatively, three students culd d this research as extra credit and present their research. This wuld enable yu t skip the research cmpnent fr the class. When grups have finished researching their creatures, have them either present t the entire class r have them frm super grups that have all three animals represented, t share infrmatin. (Skip this if the whle class has seen presentatins n real animals.) After that, students view the vide After Earth Saving Our Future n the hmepage f the After Earth Science website. Nw students shuld cmpare and cntrast real adaptatins with imaginary adaptatins and imagine pssible drivers f thse changes. Last, students will cnsider sme science and predictins relating t different categries f glbal change, (Mass Extinctin, Bidiversity, Invasive Species, Increasing CO2), and present thse t each ther. They will als access the Take Actin webpage, and explre the actins that we as citizens might take. If yur class is larger than 4 grups f 3-5 students, yu can duble-assign categries, OR assign additinal sectins f the Glbal Change web pages: Nitrgen Depletin, Climate Averages and Weather Extremes, Greenhuse Effect r Glbal Climate System.

6 In the film After Earth, several creatures seem recgnizable, but are quite different frm thse we knw tday. This is ne f the delights f science fictin thinking abut what life might be like in the future, r if cnditins were just a bit different and making up a stry. Let s see hw sme f the stry and science g tgether. Write dwn three similarities and three differences between being Charles Darwin explring the wrld in 1832 AD and Kitai in the Film After Earth explring the Earth in 3072 AD. 7 As we humans struggle t make rder ut f chas, we make bservatins abut rganisms we see. We lk at individual characteristics f rganisms, ntice their use, and call these adaptatins. Cnsidering the adaptatins f plants and animals may be a useful way f rganizing life. T lk mre clsely at hw this might wrk, we ll start with yu. Humans have many adaptatins that make us gd at surviving. Fr example, we have what is called an ppsable thumb, which means that we can make a fist, r pick a piece f fruit frm a tree. We can als HOLD that same piece f fruit easily while we eat it. This adaptatin, therefre, is ne f the things that enables us t be successful in harvesting fruit (and ther fds) and feeding urselves. Let s lk mre clsely at three creatures that appear in the film but have realwrld cunterparts n earth right nw the Leech, the Califrnia Cndr and the Flying Snake. Yu will wrk with a grup f 2 r 3 classmates, and yur teacher will direct grup assignments. (Alternatively, yur teacher may have sme students present this material t the entire class.) Yu can assume the rles f scientists, reprters, natural resurce managers and gvernment fficials as needed. With yur grup, cnsider the utline belw: What is the name f this phenmenn (It might be the title f the website yu visited)? Wh is causing this and wh (r what) is affected? Where is it happening? When is it happening? Why is it happening? Hw might it interfere with eclgical services? Nw visit the After Earth Take Actin web page and answer these questins: Read the first tw paragraphs.
