Althugh all scientific ideas are tentative and subject t change and imprvement in principle, fr mst majr ideas in science, there is much experimental and bservatinal cnfirmatin. Thse ideas are nt likely t change greatly in the future. Scientists d and have changed their ideas abut nature when they encunter new experimental evidence that des nt match their existing explanatins. Histry f Science Many individuals have cntributed t the traditins f science. Studying sme f these individuals prvides further understanding f scientific inquiry, science as a human endeavr, the nature f science, and the relatinships between science and sciety. Mathematics is essential in scientific inquiry. Mathematical tls and mdels guide and imprve the psing f questins, gathering data, cnstructing explanatins and cmmunicating results. Technlgy, by its nature, has a mre direct effect n sciety than science because its purpse is t slve human prblems, help humans adapt, and fulfill human aspiratins. Technlgical slutins may create new prblems. Science, by its nature, answers questins that may r may nt directly influence humans. Smetimes scientific advances challenge peple s beliefs and practical explanatins cncerning varius aspects f the wrld. Technlgical knwledge is ften nt made public because f patents and the financial ptential f the idea r inventin. Scientific knwledge is made public thrugh presentatins at prfessinal meetings and publicatins in scientific jurnals. 4

First and fremst, they must be cnsistent with experimental and bservatinal evidence abut nature, and must make accurate predictins, when apprpriate, abut systems being studied. They shuld als be lgical, respect the rules f evidence, be pen t criticism, reprt methds and prcedures, and make knwledge public. Explanatins n hw the natural wrld changes based n myths, persnal beliefs, religius values, mystical inspiratin, superstitin, r authrity may be persnally useful and scially relevant, but they are nt scientific. Because all scientific ideas depend n experimental and bservatinal cnfirmatin, all scientific knwledge is, in principle, subject t change as new evidence becmes available. The cre ideas f science such as the cnservatin f energy r the laws f mtin have been subjected t a wide variety f cnfirmatins and are therefre unlikely t change in the areas in which they have been tested. In areas where data r understanding are incmplete, such as the details f human evlutin r questins surrunding glbal warming, new data may well lead t changes in current ideas r reslve current cnflicts. In situatins where infrmatin is still fragmentary, it is nrmal fr scientific ideas t be incmplete, but this is als where the pprtunity fr making advances may be the greatest. Histrical perspectives Occasinally, there are advances in science and technlgy that have imprtant and lnglasting effects n science and sciety. Examples f such advances include the fllwing: Cpernican revlutin, Newtnian mechanics, Relativity, Gelgic time scale, Plate tectnics, Atmic thery, Nuclear physics, Bilgical evlutin, Germ thery, Industrial revlutin, Mlecular bilgy, Infrmatin and cmmunicatin, Quantum thery, Galactic universe, and Medical and health technlgy. Natinal Gegraphy Standards Addressed: Grades 5-8 Standard 1: The Wrld in Spatial Terms: A. Describe the essential characteristics and functins f maps and gegraphic representatins, tls and technlgies by being able t: Explain map essentials (scale, directinal indicatrs, symbls). C.
