1 Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal Authr Guidelines The Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal is the fficial publicatin f the American Nephrlgy Nurses' Assciatin (ANNA). The Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal is a refereed clinical and scientific publicatin that prvides current infrmatin n a wide variety f subjects t facilitate the practice f prfessinal nephrlgy nursing. Its purpse is t disseminate infrmatin n the latest advances in research, practice, and educatin t nephrlgy nurses and t psitively influence the quality f care prvided. The Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal welcmes bth slicited and unslicited manuscripts and suggestins fr articles. Manuscript queries shuld be submitted t BethTUlrich@gmail.cm. All materials must be riginal and submitted fr the exclusive use f the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal. Manuscript Preparatin Manuscript frmat shuld fllw the guidelines established by the Publicatin Manual f the American Psychlgical Assciatin (APA), 6th editin (2010). In additin, NNJ adheres t APA guidelines regarding the use f nn-biased language. Authrs shuld refer t that text fr all details f their manuscript. Technical Frmat Manuscripts shuld be submitted using MS Wrd. The manuscript shuld be submitted in a 12 pint fnt, be duble spaced, and have at least ne inch (1 ) margins. The preferred fnt is Times New Rman. The text in the bdy f the manuscript shuld be indented at the beginning f each paragraph. A running header (shrtened title) and page number shuld be included at the tp f each page f the manuscript except fr the title page. Reference sftware prgrams (including the prgram that cmes with MSWrd) shuld NOT be used. Headings NNJ uses three levels f headings in the bdy f the manuscript: First Level (bld, left justified, underlined, Arial fnt) Secnd Level (bld, left justified, Times New Rman fnt) Third level. (bld, at the start f the paragraph, Times New Rman fnt) Punctuatin Guidelines (APA, Chapter 4) Spacing - Insert ne space after cmmas, clns, and semiclns; perids that separate parts f a reference citatin; and perids f the initials f persnal names. Cmmas - Within a sentence, use cmmas t separate three r mre elements that d nt have internal cmmas (fr example apples, ranges, and bananas); use semiclns t separate three r mre elements that have internal cmmas. Qutatin marks - Use duble qutatin marks when quting material directly frm the surce, the first time a wrd r phrase is used fr an invented r cined expressin, and t set ff the title f an article r chapter when the title is mentined in the text. D nt use duble qutatin marks t identify the anchrs f a scale r t intrduce a technical term - italicize them instead. D nt use duble qutatin marks t enclse blck qutatins f 40 r mre wrds. Bullet pints - If each bullet pint is a cmplete sentence, start each with a capital letter and end each with a perid. If the bullet pints are a list, then end each bullet pint with a cmma r semicln as nted abve. End the last bullet pint with a perid.

Disclsure statement. Include a statement signed by all authrs that the cntents, in whle r in part, have nt been previusly reprted, and are nt under cnsideratin fr publicatin elsewhere, nr will be, until a decisin is made by the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal Editr. Acknwledgement f funding r ther cntributins (include nly if applicable) Abstract ( wrds) Key wrds Learning utcme Manuscript text References Tables (each n a separate page) Figures (each n a separate page) Tables, Figures, and Phtgraphs (APA, Chapter 5) Each table and figure (including phtgraphs, which are cnsidered t be figures) shuld appear n a separate page after the reference sectin. Each table and figure shuld have a title at the tp and any surces r permissins fr the use f the table listed under the table/figure. Fr figures, make sure t submit the figure in a frmat that can be recreated fr publicatin. If the figure is a graph, fr example, submit the graph in a frmat that includes access t the data used t create the graph. The data in the tables and figures shuld be carefully checked fr accuracy - make sure all the numbers that shuld add up actually d add up. Phtgraphs must be f high reslutin. If the table r figure is taken frm anther surce, include a full reference citatin. Obtaining permissin t reprint anther's wrk is the respnsibility f the authr. In additin, phtgraphs that cntain the image f an individual r individuals must be accmpanied by signed releases frm thse individuals stating that they give permissin fr the phtgraph t be used in NNJ. Citatins and References The purpse f citatins and references is fr readers t be able t find the surces cited. Citatins and references must fllw the guidelines in the APA Publicatin Manual, 6th editin, Examples are prvide belw. Fr ther types f citatins r references, refer t the APA Publicatin Manual, Chapter 6: Crediting Surces. Citatins Citatins shuld be frm primary surces and shuld be as current as pssible. Citatins frm references with ne r tw authrs shuld list all authrs in each citatin. (Kear, 2014; Ulrich & Rbbins, 2015). Citatins frm references with three, fur, r five authrs shuld list all authrs the first time the reference is cited. (Headley, Brks, Szrmba, & Dutka, 2011)

(Headley et al., 2011) Citatins frm references with six r mre authrs shuld list the first authr fllwed by et al. n all citatins. (Claneri et al., 2014) When multiple citatins are listed fr the same infrmatin, they shuld be listed in alphabetical rder, with each citatin - except the last - fllwed by a semi-cln. (Claneri et al., 2014; Headley, Brks, Szrmba, & Dutka, 2011; Kear, 2014; Ulrich & Rbbins, 2015) References Reference infrmatin shuld be btained frm the riginal (primary) surce. There shuld be a reference fr each surce cited in the manuscript. References shuld be listed in alphabetical rder at the end f the manuscript and shuld begin n a new page. Authrs are encuraged t prvide digital bject identifier (DOI) numbers, when available, at the end f the reference. Fr references with ne, tw, three, fur, five, r six authrs, all authr names shuld be listed. Fr references seven r mre authrs, the names f the first six authrs shuld be listed fllwed by an ellipses ( ) and the name f the last authr. Nte that in the reference titles, nly the first wrd, prper names, and the first wrd after a cln are capitalized. When there is mre than ne reference by the same authr, the references by that authr shuld be listed in rder f the publicatin years with the earliest article listed first. When there is mre than ne reference by the same authr in the same year, thse references shuld be rdered alphabetically by the first wrd f the title and a lwercase suffix shuld be added t the year beginning with the letter a (i.e., 2015a, 2015b). References fr an entire bk must cntain the name(s) f the authr(s), year f publicatin, title f bk, editin f bk (if multiple additins have been printed), lcatin f the publisher, and the name f the publisher. References fr articles must include the name(s) f the authr(s), year f publicatin, title f the article, name f the jurnal, vlume number, issue number, page numbers, and DOI number, if available. Manuscripts must NOT cntain reference sftware cdes, and the use f reference sftware is highly discuraged. Manuscripts must be submitted in bth electrnic and hard cpy

The submissin must als include cpyright and disclsure statements as well as any permissins required fr use f infrmatin, tables, figures, and phtgraphs. Authrs must retain a cpy f the submitted manuscript, including illustratins, graphs, and/r charts. Authrs will receive an acknwledgment within 14 days f the receipt f the hard cpies Cpyright and Disclsure Statements All material published in the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal is prtected by cpyright. The Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal des nt accept respnsibility fr statements r claims made by cntributrs. All authrs are required t submit a signed cpyright release frm and a disclsure f cnflict f interest statement. Manuscript Review Prcess The Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal is a refereed publicatin. Manuscripts are sent t members f the Manuscript Review Panel and/r Editrial Bard fr review and recmmendatins, with the Editr having the final decisin abut the dispsitin f manuscripts. Decisins are made based n the reviewers' recmmendatins n relevance t the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal readership, riginality, educatinal value, strength f cnclusins (where applicable), clarity, and cnciseness f literary expressin. NNJ adheres t the authrship requirements as specified in the Unifrm Requirements fr Manuscripts Submitted t Bimedical Jurnals (URMSBJ) develped by the Internatinal Cmmittee f Medical Jurnal Editrs ( As nted in the URMSBJ, All persns designated as authrs shuld qualify fr authrship, and all thse wh qualify shuld be listed. Each authr shuld have participated sufficiently in the wrk t take public respnsibility fr apprpriate prtins f the cntent. The rder f authrship is a decisin f the authrs. The primary authr shuld be indicated n the Authr and General Infrmatin page. All crrespndence cncerning the article will be sent t the primary authr. It is the primary authr s respnsibility t cmmunicate this infrmatin t ther authrs and t cmmunicate infrmatin frm ther authrs t the NNJ.

Acknwledgements are used t recgnize funding surces and are als ften used t recgnize the cntributins and supprt f clleagues r grups in the perfrmance f the research reprted in the manuscript r the develpment f the manuscript. The acknwledgement shuld be cncise and prfessinally wrded. When readers may infer that thse acknwledged endrse the data, cnclusins, and/r the cntent in general, authrs must btain written permissin frm peple included in the acknwledgement and must submit that permissin t NNJ. What is included in an abstract and hw lng shuld it be? An abstract is a brief, cncise, cmprehensive summary f the article. It shuld be wrds in length. In general, abbreviatins shuld be avided in abstracts. The abstract shuld be n a separate page at the beginning f the manuscript. When an article is indexed, nly the title, the abstract, and reference infrmatin will appear in article searches. What is nn-biased language? NNJ adheres t APA guidelines regarding the use f nn-biased language. The verall principle f nn-biased language is that the integrity f all human beings shuld be maintained and that they shuld nt be described by language that bjectifies them. This requires, fr example, replacing terms like "hemdialysis patients" with "patients n hemdialysis" and using peple with diabetes instead f diabetics. What are primary surces fr citatins and references and why shuld they be used? Primary surces are the riginal surces f infrmatin, such as the riginal reprt f a research study. Yu shuld nt rely n ther peple's interpretatin(s) f what was reprted in anther publicatin. If Authr A cites Authr B's publicatin as the surce fr infrmatin in Authr A's article, then yu shuld read Authr B's publicatin and cnfirm Authr A's interpretatin r, better yet, create yur wn interpretatin. Yu als shuld nt cpy reference infrmatin frm Authr A's article, but shuld cnfirm the crrect reference infrmatin befre including it in yur article. Why d yu discurage the use f reference management sftware? Reference management sftware can be very useful, but many reference management sftware prducts d nt create cmplete and accurate citatins and references. Editing citatins and references in a manuscript in which reference management sftware has been used is ften very difficult. What abbreviatins can be used? NNJ allws the use f cmmn abbreviatins. In any case in which an abbreviatin is nt in cmmn use r may be cnfused with a similar abbreviatin, an abbreviatin shuld NOT be used. NNJ als des nt use any abbreviatins in the manuscript that are n the Jint Cmmissin d nt use list. What units f measure shuld be used? In general, NNJ uses the metric system and adheres t the Internatinal System f Units (SI) and its abbreviatins. Metric units are preferred fr measurements f vlume, weight, height, and length. Refer t the APA Publicatin Manual fr mre details. Cnversin infrmatin may be included in parentheses as apprpriate. What names f pharmaceuticals, devices, etc. shuld be used? Nnprprietary names f pharmaceutical prducts, devices, etc. shuld be used at all times unless the brand/trade name is relevant t the cntent. What are the guidelines fr numbers? (APA, Chapter 4) In general, use numerals fr numbers 10 and abve and wrds t express numbers belw 10. There are exceptins t this such as numbers that immediately precede a unit f measure; numbers that represent statistical r mathematic functins, percentages, ratis, and the like; numbers that represent time, dates, ages, scres, and pints n a scale, exact sums f mney, and numerals as numerals; numbers that dente a specific place in a numbered series, parts f bks and tables, and each number in a list f fur r mre numbers. Use wrds fr numbers and fr cmmn fractins that begin a sentence, title, r heading. Use a zer befre the decimal pint with numbers that are less than ne when the statistic can exceed ne.

6 NNJ Authr Guidelines Page 6 What is a cpyright transfer? In rder t cmply with present U.S. cpyright law, each authr f a submitted manuscript must cmplete and sign a transfer f cpyright frm. Yur signature n this frm expressly transfers cpyright f the manuscript and its cntents (tables, figures, phts, etc.) t the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal in the event that it is published in media nw and hereafter invented. The cpyright transfer signature als cnfirms that the material is riginal and nt previusly published r under cnsideratin fr publicatin elsewhere nr will be, either in whle r partially, except in abstract frm until a decisin is made by the Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal. The authr als certifies that any affiliatins with r invlvement in any rganizatin r entity with a direct financial interest in the subject matter r materials discussed in the manuscript (e.g., emplyment, cnsultancies, stck wnership, hnraria, expert testimny) are disclsed. What d I need t knw abut prtecting peple s privacy? Peple have a right t their privacy. N identifying details shuld be included unless they are essential fr scientific purpses. If initials are used as identifiers, they must be pseudnym initials. If any identifying infrmatin is included in phtgraphs, written descriptins, r pedigrees the persn r the persn s legal guardian must give written cnsent fr publicatin. The identified persn r the persn s legal guardian, if apprpriate, shuld see the manuscript befre granting permissin. The bligatin t prtect peple s privacy applies t staff members, clleagues, and thers as well as t patients. Sme peple like being identified in articles, but sme d nt, and their wishes shuld be hnred. What is cnsidered plagiarism? Plagiarism is nt brrwing r cpying. It is an act f fraud and is illegal. "The expressin f riginal ideas is cnsidered intellectual prperty and is prtected by cpyright laws, just like riginal inventins. Almst all frms f expressin fall under cpyright prtectin as lng as they are recrded in sme way (such as a bk r a cmputer file). Cnflict f interest exists when an authr (r the authr s institutin), reviewer, r editr has financial r persnal relatinships that inapprpriately influence (bias) his r her actins (such relatinships are als knwn as dual cmmitments,

These relatinships vary frm thse with negligible ptential t thse with great ptential t influence judgment, and nt all relatinships represent true cnflict f interest. The ptential fr cnflict f interest can exist whether r nt an individual believes that the relatinship affects his r her scientific judgment. Financial relatinships (such as emplyment, cnsultancies, stck wnership, hnraria, paid expert testimny) are the mst easily identifiable cnflicts f interest and the mst likely t undermine the credibility f the jurnal, the authrs, and f science itself. Hwever, cnflicts can ccur fr ther reasns, such as persnal relatinships, academic cmpetitin, and intellectual passin. Authrs shuld identify individuals wh prvide writing assistance and disclse the funding surce fr this assistance. Infrmed Cnsent Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal requires authrs t assure patients and subjects privacy, if applicable, related t their research and manuscript. Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal endrses and subscribes t the definitin f Human and Animal Rights by the Internatinal Cmmittee f Medical Jurnal Editrs (2006), Unifrm Requirements fr Manuscripts Submitted t Bimedical Jurnals, which states: Patients have a right t privacy that shuld nt be infringed withut infrmed cnsent. Identifying infrmatin, including patients names, initials, r hspital numbers, shuld nt be published in written descriptins, phtgraphs, and pedigrees unless the infrmatin is essential fr scientific purpses and the patient (r parent r guardian) gives written infrmed cnsent fr publicatin. Infrmed cnsent fr this purpse requires that a patient wh is identifiable be shwn the manuscript t be published. Identifying details shuld be mitted if they are nt essential. Cmplete annymity is difficult t achieve, hwever, and infrmed cnsent shuld be btained if there is any dubt. Fr example, masking the eye regin in phtgraphs f patients is inadequate prtectin f annymity. If identifying characteristics are altered t prtect annymity, such as in genetic pedigrees, authrs shuld prvide assurance that alteratins d nt distrt scientific meaning and editrs shuld s nte. When infrmed cnsent has been btained it shuld be indicated in the published article. Human and Animal Rights Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal requires authrs t disclse Institutinal Review Bard cnsent, if applicable, related t their research and manuscript. Nephrlgy Nursing Jurnal endrses and subscribes t the definitin f Human and Animal Rights by the Internatinal Cmmittee f Medical Jurnal Editrs (2006), Unifrm Requirements fr Manuscripts Submitted t Bimedical Jurnals, which states: When reprting experiments n human subjects, authrs shuld indicate whether the prcedures fllwed were in accrdance with the ethical standards f the respnsible cmmittee n human experimentatin (institutinal and natinal) and with the Helsinki Declaratin f 1975, as revised in If dubt exists whether the research was cnducted in accrdance with the Helsinki Declaratin, the authrs must explain the ratinale fr their apprach, and demnstrate that the institutinal review bdy explicitly apprved the dubtful aspects f the study.
