Accepted submissins will be presented at the STS 54th Annual Meeting as ral presentatins. The STS Annual Meeting is the premier educatinal event in cardithracic surgery. Manuscripts crrespnding t accepted ral presentatins are required t be submitted fr publicatin cnsideratin in The Annals f Thracic Surgery, which has a circulatin f mre than 6,700. This makes the STS Annual Meeting the best frum fr disseminating infrmatin related t the field f cardithracic surgery. Ntwithstanding the freging, the STS Bard f Directrs r Executive Cmmittee may waive the requirement that authrs f an abstract accepted fr presentatin at the STS Annual Meeting submit a crrespnding manuscript t The Annals f Thracic Surgery fr publicatin cnsideratin in unusual circumstances. Requests fr such waivers must be submitted in writing t the STS Secretary, and may be granted subject t certain terms and cnditins. In all such circumstances, manuscripts derived frm STS Annual Meeting presentatins may nt be published prir t presentatin f the material at the Annual Meeting. Abstract submissins that were previusly submitted and nt accepted fr presentatin at the STS 54th Annual Meeting will nt be cnsidered as a late-breaking abstract. 3 The presenting authr cannt be an emplyee f a cmpany that develps health care prducts r prvides health care services. Abstracts cannt cntain prduct names; generic terms must be used when describing a single prduct. Abstract develpment and data analysis fr abstracts cannt be perfrmed by industry. The institutin name, state, and address infrmatin f the presenting authr and all cauthrs must be prvided. When percentages are used, the abslute numbers f derivatin must be stated. Each submissin must include ne multiple chice questin that is assciated with the cntent, alng with fur pssible answers ne f which must be the crrect answer, identified in the submissin. Each submissin requires three t fur keywrds relating t the abstract. Each submissin requires a minimum f tw bibligraphic references related t the abstract. All abstracts must be structured using the fllwing sectin headings, r they will nt be accepted: Purpse - Include a brief statement n the intent f the study and the current state f research in the field. Specifically, describe the quality gap (limitatin r prblem) within the practice f cardithracic surgery that this research addresses. Methds - The methds f the study r experimental apprach shuld be clearly and briefly defined. Results - Prvide a summary f the study findings, including sufficient details, t supprt thse cnclusins. These may be presented in a brief table (n mre than five clumns f data). Cnclusins - Include a statement cncerning the significance f the wrk and its implicatins fr further research. In what way might the results f this prject supplement r infrm clinical r research knwledge r strategies? THE SOCIETY OF THORACIC SURGEONS POLICY ON STS ANNUAL MEETING FOR PRESENTERS AND MODERATORS Abstract and Surgical Vide Submissins Each abstract and surgical vide submitted t the Sciety fr pssible presentatin at the STS Annual Meeting must summarize an riginal cntributin and must nt have been presented, published r accepted fr presentatin r publicatin elsewhere. Abstracts and surgical vides chsen fr presentatin are selected at the discretin f the Wrkfrce n Annual Meeting t create a fair and balanced prgram. Only electrnic abstracts submitted using the nline system will be cnsidered fr presentatin. Only authrs (and nt their assistants) may cmplete submissins; authrs will be respnsible fr the infrmatin prvided. The submitting authr must prvide accurate addresses f all c-authrs, and must attest that (a) all c-authrs f the abstract have granted cnsent fr the material t be submitted fr presentatin, and (b) that the submitting authr has been granted the right by all c-authrs t act n their behalf. Fr the submitted abstract r surgical vide, each c-authr must cmplete his r her disclsure infrmatin in the system. The abstract r surgical vide will nt be reviewed r cnsidered fr acceptance unless all authrs have cmpleted their disclsures. STS reserves the right t withdraw any abstract and/r surgical vide at any time. All abstracts and surgical vides must be submitted and presented in English. If an abstract is nt accepted as an ral presentatin, it may be accepted as a scientific pster presentatin instead. The final determinatin n frmat is at the discretin f the Wrkfrce n Annual Meeting. The presenting authr fr each abstract and/r surgical vide must attend the STS Annual Meeting. In the event that a change f presenting authr must be made after the submissin f the abstract, STS must be ntified in writing. NOTE: The replacement presenter must be a c-authr f the abstract. Once an abstract and/r surgical vide has been accepted, additinal authrs may nt be added. 3

Abstract and surgical vide cntent must be based upn the best available evidence and shuld nt prmte any health care device, drug, ther prduct r service. Presenters/mderatrs fund by the Sciety nt t have attempted t utilize the best available evidence, r fund t have prvided cntent that is biased r prmtinal in nature, will nt be allwed t take part in the planning r prvisin f any ther STS educatinal prgram r prduct fr tw years. If the presenter/mderatr has any relatinship psing a cnflict r ptential cnflict relevant t his r her sessin, he r she may nt make any recmmendatins regarding relevant prducts r services as part f that sessin. Any presenter/mderatr fund t have made a recmmendatin based upn relevant prducts r services in the presence f a relatinship that pses an actual r ptential cnflict f interest will nt be allwed t take part in the planning r prvisin f any ther STS educatinal prgram r prduct fr tw years. Each presenter f an ral presentatin during the scientific sessins will be prvided with a time limit fr presentatin and must cmply with this limit. Scientific psters selected fr presentatin/display at the STS Annual Meeting must be displayed at the meeting frm Sunday by 2:00 p.m. until Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the assigned lcatin. Authrs wh d nt display their selected psters during this time f the STS Annual Meeting, will be subject t a tw-year perid f ineligibility fr participatin in the Annual Meeting, prvided that the Sciety may waive this penalty when unusual circumstances are presented. This sanctin applies t all authrs f the pster. N abstract will be cnsidered with deferred utcme data. If data are t be presented, they must appear in the riginal abstract submitted. If there are any questins regarding changes in data after the abstract has been submitted, it is the respnsibility f the presenting authr t ntify STS by at educatin@sts.rg. Fr each abstract that is presented rally r as a scientific pster during the STS Annual Meeting, a crrespnding manuscript must als be submitted t The Annals f Thracic Surgery fr publicatin cnsideratin befre r at the time f the meeting. Authrs must submit manuscripts separately via The Annals nline editrial ffice ( All manuscripts shall becme the prperty f the Sciety. If a manuscript is nt submitted t The Annals prir t r at the time f the STS Annual Meeting, a 2-year perid f ineligibility fr participatin in the STS Annual Meeting will be impsed upn all manuscript authrs, prvided that the Editr f The Annals at his r her sle discretin may prvide the authr(s) with an extensin f time in which t submit the manuscript when unusual circumstances are presented. The same 2-year sanctin rules apply t each abstract returned fr revisin that is nt resubmitted within ne calendar year f the request fr the revisin. The submitting authr must attest that the material has nt been presented r published elsewhere, will nt be presented r published after submissin and prir t ntificatin f acceptance r rejectin, will nt be presented elsewhere if accepted fr the scientific prgram, and subject t any waiver granted pursuant t the terms f this plicy - will nt be published elsewhere if accepted fr publicatin in The Annals f Thracic Surgery. Ntwithstanding the freging, individuals wh previusly submitted an abstract t the Sciety fr cnsideratin as the basis fr a presentatin at the STS Annual Meeting and wish t submit that abstract fr additinal cnsideratin as the basis fr a presentatin at the ASTRO/ASCO/STS Multidisciplinary Thracic Cancers Sympsium may d s, prvided that (a) if selected fr presentatin at bth meetings, the manuscript must be submitted t The Annals fr publicatin cnsideratin, with cpyright assigned t the Sciety, and that (b) the Sciety will then grant a license t the American Sciety fr Radiatin Onclgy fr publicatin f nly the abstract in the Internatinal Jurnal f Radiatin Onclgy. If there is any cnceivable questin regarding similarity t earlier wrk r pssible duplicatin r redundancy (whether cmpared t previusly r prspectively presented r published material), it is the respnsibility f the presenting authr t cnsult directly with the Chair f the Wrkfrce n Annual Meeting. If there is a ptential cnflict with an abstract r surgical vide already presented r published, authrs must ntify STS by 4

5 f the cnflict at the time f submissin. Failure t cmply will result in the abstract being rejected. Onsite Respnsibilities Each presenter is required t check in at the speaker ready rm at least 2 hurs prir t his r her presentatin time t lad and test the presentatin slides and/r ther material. Slide Presentatin Requirements All presentatins must be submitted in English. If slides are used, the first slide (after title slide) must reflect the required disclsure infrmatin. The names f cmmercial prducts cannt be used unless the failure t d s wuld present a patient safety issue. Crprate lgs, clinical trial lgs and lgs f ther meetings cannt be used. Slides, handuts and ther materials utilized as part f an educatinal activity cannt cntain any advertising, trade name, r prduct grup message. N patient identificatin infrmatin can be visible within presentatin materials (e.g., names in ech scans, CT scans, r phts f patients). Additinal Presenter/Mderatr Respnsibilities Presenters/Mderatrs are respnsible fr ensuring that the cntent being presented at the educatinal activity is cnsistent with and des nt vilate anther rganizatin s publicatin guidelines and cnditins. Presenters/Mderatrs are respnsible fr ensuring accurate spelling, punctuatin and grammar prir t submissin. STS reserves the right t withdraw a presentatin at any time and fr any reasn. Required Disclsure Infrmatin Cnflict f Interest and FDA disclsures are required befre any presenter/mderatr will be allwed t present. Each presenter/mderatr must submit t STS his/her individual disclsure. Amended: September 28, 2016 (STS Executive Cmmittee) Abstract Review Prcess T ensure fairness, abstracts are read and graded in a blinded fashin with n references t authrs r institutins. Abstracts are reviewed by the Wrkfrce n Annual Meeting Prgram Task Frce and selected based n scientific merit, riginality, and practice gaps identified. Disclsure Infrmatin Cnflict f interest and FDA disclsure is required befre a late-breaking abstract will be accepted fr cnsideratin. If a ptential cnflict f interest exists, be sure t include the name f the rganizatin/cmpany and the nature f the ptential cnflict. Each authr must submit her/his individual disclsure when cmpleting the abstract submissin. It is the respnsibility f the submitting authr t identify each cauthr n the abstract. Upn submissin f the abstract, an will be sent t each cauthr, wh will then be respnsible fr lgging int the abstract system t cmplete her/his individual disclsure. If cmmercial relatinship and FDA disclsures are nt received frm all cauthrs by the abstract submissin deadline (Friday, December 8, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. Central Daylight Time), the abstract will nt be cnsidered fr review. Fr live presentatins, all relatinships with cmmercial interests and FDA disclsures, as defined in the STS Disclsure Plicy, must be stated rally t the audience at the beginning f each presentatin. In additin, a slide at the beginning f the PwerPint presentatin will be autmatically inserted int yur presentatin t reveal the nature f the disclsure(s). This cmmercial relatinship and FDA disclsure 5

6 infrmatin will be nted in published materials. Speakers are required t cmmunicate that they have nthing t disclse if that is the case. Cnflict f Interest Disclsure As a spnsr f cntinuing medical educatin accredited by the Accreditatin Cuncil fr Cntinuing Medical Educatin (ACCME), The Sciety f Thracic Surgens requires that any individual wh is in a psitin t cntrl the cntent f an educatinal activity must disclse all relatinships with cmmercial interests (including knwn relatinships f his r her immediate family, department, and partners.). The ACCME defines a cmmercial interest as any entity prducing, marketing, reselling, r distributing health care gds r services cnsumed by, r used n, patients. The ACCME des nt cnsider prviders f clinical service directly t patients t be cmmercial interests. The questin f whether a disclsed cnflict situatin culd represent undue influence n the educatinal activity by a cmmercial interest r whether the disclsed infrmatin is sufficient t cnsider an abstract, presentatin, r ther educatinal enduring material t represent ptentially biased infrmatin must be reslved prir t an individual s invlvement in STS educatinal prgramming. Required disclsures include (1) a financial interest f any amunt (e.g., thrugh wnership f stck, stck ptins, r bnds), (2) the receipt f any amunt f cash, gds r services within the current 12-mnth perid (e.g., thrugh research grants, emplyment, cnsulting fees, ryalties, travel, r gifts), r (3) a nnremunerative psitin f influence (e.g., as fficer, directr, trustee r public spkespersn). EXCLUDED frm this disclsure requirement are blind trusts r ther passive investments, such as mutual funds. In the case f a financial r ther relatinship disclsure, the cmpany, prduct/service, and specific nature f the relatinship must be nted. Disclsure is mandatry fr any persn invlved in the planning, management, presentatin, and/r evaluatin f STS educatinal activities. Failure t disclse all relatinships with cmmercial interests disqualifies the individual frm being a planning cmmittee member, a teacher, r an authr f educatinal materials, and this individual cannt have any respnsibility fr the develpment, management, presentatin, r evaluatin f STS educatinal activities. This requirement is intended neither t imply any imprpriety f such relatinships nr t prejudice any individual planner, presenter r authr. It is merely intended t identify such relatinships thrugh full disclsure, and t allw STS t assess and reslve ptential influences n the educatinal activity prir t the planning and implementatin f an educatinal activity. If n relatinships with cmmercial interests exist, the individual must indicate this n the disclsure frm. FDA Disclsure If a device r drug requiring FDA apprval is identified as a cmpnent f yur presentatin, yu must indicate the FDA status fr use f the device r drug as it will be discussed in this presentatin. Additinally, the fact that the presentatin, paper, r ther educatinal prduct describes (a) the use f a device, drug, r ther prduct that is nt FDA apprved r (b) an ff-label use f an apprved device, drug, r ther prduct must als be disclsed. This requirement has been adpted in respnse t FDA plicy and case law invlving medical scieties and is nt intended t prhibit r inhibit independent presentatin r discussin regarding the uses f devices, drugs, and ther prducts as described in (a) r (b) abve. Withdrawal f an Abstract T withdraw an abstract, the presenter must ntify STS in writing. Please STS at educatin@sts.rg and include the title f the abstract and the abstract cntrl number. Abstract Dispsitin Ntificatin At the time f submissin, please ensure all authr and cauthr addresses are accurate, as this is the nly way that yu can be cntacted regarding the status f yur abstract submissin(s). On r after December 18, 2017, STS will send peer-reviewed selectin results t the presenting authr listed n 6
