1 MISSOURI S&T SPORTS MEDICINE CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (Updated May 2017) The S&T Sprts Medicine Prgram recgnizes the imprtance f prper diagnsis, treatment, and management f cncussins. NCAA Guidelines and current medical standards f practice have been used t develp the Missuri S&T Sprts Medicine Cncussin Management Prgram. This prgram will be updated annually. This prgram is a partnership between the medical staff, trainers, caches, and student-athletes. Reference is made t: NCAA Sprts Medicine Handbk Guideline 21 SPORTS-RELATED CONCUSSION Revised July 2013 pages Cncussin (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury) and the Team Physician: A Cnsensus Update Sprts Medicine Update January/February 2012) Natinal Athletic Trainers Assciatin Psitin Statement: Management f Sprt Cncussin Jurnal f Athletic Training April 2014 EDUCATION: Training will ccur annually and with rientatin fr new athletes, caches, and medical staff. 1) All S&T athletes: a. Will read the NCAA Cncussin Fact Sheet fr Student-Athletes and. b. Sign the attached Student-Athlete Cncussin Statement attesting they understand the NCAA Cncussin Fact Sheet c. Accept the respnsibility fr reprting their injuries and illnesses t the institutinal medical staff, including signs and symptms f cncussins by signing the S&T Cncussin Agreement

2 2) All S&T caches (head caches and assistant caches): a. Will read the NCAA Cncussin Fact Sheet fr caches b. They will sign the Caches Cncussin Statement that they understand the NCAA Cncussin Fact Sheet c. Will encurage their athletes t reprt any suspected injuries and illness t the institutinal medical staff, including signs and symptms f cncussins; and that they accept the respnsibility fr the referring any athlete t the medical staff suspected f sustaining a cncussin. d. Will read and understand the S&T Sprts Medicine Cncussin Management Prgram 3) All S&T team physicians, physician extenders, athletic trainers, graduate assistant athletic trainers, and undergraduate athletic trainers: a. Will prvide athletes with the NCAA Cncussin Fact Sheet and encurage their athletes t reprt any suspected injuries and illnesses t the institutinal medical staff, including signs and symptms f cncussins b. Have read, understand, and will fllw the S&T Sprts Medicine Cncussin Management Prgram c. Will read and sign the Prvider Cncussin Statement 4) The Student Health Educatr: a. Will prmte campus awareness f cncussin reprting and management thrugh prgrams and marketing. This will include current infrmatin that is available thrugh the Center fr Disease Cntrl and ther authritative surces. b. Ensure the updated S&T Sprts Medicine Cncussin Management Prgram dcument will be accessible thrugh the S&T Sprts Medicine website. PREPARTICIPATION All student athletes will receive base line testing regardless f sprt. Tested individuals include: first year athletes, transfers athletes, athletes with previus seasn cncussins, and ther selected athletes. Testing dcumentatin will be part f the athletic medical recrd. Testing includes: ImPACT cgnitive sftware, symptm review, balance testing, vestibular cular, and King-Devick testing. Testing will ccur befre an athlete is cleared t participate in their first practice.

3 DIAGNOSIS Because recgnitin f a cncussin is difficult and the assciated symptms may be vague, S&T medical staff will take an active apprach t early head injury recgnitin. If there is any dubt, the athlete will be taken ut f cmpetitin. Diagnsis starts with recgnitin r reprts f wide variety f ptential symptms. Pssible Signs and Symptms f Cncussin include: Physical Headache Nausea r vmiting Blurred Visin Balance prblems Fatigue r lw energy Feeling mentally fggy Feeling slwed dwn Difficulty cncentrating Difficulty remembering Frgetful f recent infrmatin and cnversatins Sensitivity t light Cnfused abut recent event Sensitivity t nise Answers questins slwly Numbness/tingling Mre emtinal Dizziness / dazed Drwsiness Lss f cnsciusness seizure r cnvulsin Amnesia Irritability sadness Nervus r anxius pressure t the head Neck pain Cgnitive Whenever a cncussin is suspected: Missuri S&T medical staff shall be ntified immediately f any signs and symptms f a cncussin that is witnessed, reprted r suspected. The athlete will be immediately taken ut f participatin (practice r cmpetitin). A sideline evaluatin will be prmptly administered by an athletic trainer. SCAT3 examinatin and the medical staff s neurlgical evaluatin are perfrmed. Student-Athlete may nly return t play the same day if all f the fllwing are present: He/she passes examinatin frm the SCAT3 exam. He/she des nt present any cncussin like symptms at rest r with exertin tests. A minimum f 15 minute bservatin with mnitring. Student-Athlete is remved frm play if he/she fails any part f the SCAT3. If remved frm play, the student-athlete is nt t return fr the remainder f the cmpetitin. The student-athlete will be diagnsed with a cncussin.

4 If Student-Athlete sustains lss f cnsciusness r displays a prgressin r deteriratin f mental r physical cnditin, they will be sent immediately t the lcal emergency rm via ambulance with additinal emphasis n cervical spine and airway stabilizatin. When a cncussin is cnfirmed: During Cmpetitin If the student-athlete des nt display emergent symptms he/she will remain n the sidelines and will be rechecked peridically fr changing symptms by the medical staff. If at any time during the cmpetitin the medical staff feels that the student-athlete s symptms deterirate beynd his/her scpe f practice he/she will be sent immediately t the lcal emergency rm. Pst cmpetitin If determined t be stable the student-athlete will receive a cpy f the apprved Missuri S&T Athletic Training Pst Cncussin Take Hme Instructins. A reliable persn will be assigned t assist and mnitr the invlved student-athlete and will als review the take hme instructins. The assigned persn will be respnsible fr ntifying the assigned athletic trainer if signs and symptms deterirate. A cpy f this dcumentatin will be part f the athletic medical treatment recrd. Fllw up evaluatins: A standardized pst-cncussin symptm checklist, ImPACT and balance testing will be administered within 24hrs which will be cmpared t his/ her baseline scre. Results f examinatin will be dcumented. A Physician evaluatin is recmmended within hurs pst injury. Student-Athletes will have cntinued repeat evaluatins at a frequency determined by the athletic trainer and the team physician. With any deteriratin f symptms r decline in examinatin the student athlete will have cnsideratin fr additinal imaging r specialty referral as necessary. The student-athlete will be educated n Secnd Impact Syndrme. Prlnged symptms will be assessed fr Pst-Cncussin Syndrme.

5 When the student-athlete becmes asymptmatic: The student-athlete will be retested using the symptm checklist, ImPACT and balance testing alng with any additinal neurlgic testing. The team physician will reexamine the student-athlete and clear fr a graduated return t play prtcl. Refer t return t play stages and supplemental dcumentatin frm. The student-athletes must be cleared fr play by the team physician after cmpleting Stage 5 f the return t play. Final clearance and all intermediate clearances will be dcumented in the student-athlete s medical treatment recrd. The S&T Sprts Medicine Prgram: Des nt allw caches frm serving as the primary supervisr fr athletics health care prviders (e.g., sprts medicine staff, trainer, team physician, utside physician). Gives qualified health care prviders with experience in the evaluatin and management f TBIs and cncussins the final authrity t remve any such athlete with pssible TBI r cncussin frm athletic activity (such as cmpetitin, practice, r cnditining sessins). Gives qualified health care prviders with experience in the evaluatin and management f TBIs and cncussins final authrity t prevent the return t athletic activity (such as cmpetitin, practice, r cnditining sessins) f any such athlete with pssible TBI r cncussin. Give qualified health care prviders with experience in the evaluatin and management f TBIs and cncussins final authrity t immediately refer any such athlete with pssible TBI r cncussin t an apprpriately-qualified physician r emergency service prvider.
