2 Prpsal Guidelines General Infrmatin Thank yu fr yur interest in submitting a sessin prpsal fr the Annual Midwest Assciatin fr Latin American Studies (MALAS) Cnference titled, Bridges and Walls: Perspectives n Unity and Diversity frm the U.S.- Mexic Brder and the Americas / Puentes y Murallas: Perspectivas sbre la unidad y diversidad desde la frntera E.E.U.U Méxic y las Américas The 2018 MALAS Cnference will take place n Nvember 15 17, 2018, in El Pas, Texas at the Hiltn Garden Inn n the campus f The University f Texas at El Pas. The prgram will cnsist primarily f presentatins selected thrugh this pen call fr submissins. Depending n the tpic t be discussed, the presentatins may be in English r Spanish. In additin, there will be invited speakers and panel discussins. The 2018 cnference marks the 68 th editin f the cnferences. This cnference prvides an pprtunity fr schlars (faculty, researchers, students) in Latin American matters t cntribute twards better understanding f all things Latin American, frm literature t plitics t human rights, and mre. Bwen ( jbwen5@slu.edu; phne ). Prpsal Deadline The deadline fr submissin is Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. But, we wuld appreciate receiving the papers much earlier than the deadline. Submissin Frmats Individual Papers: Individual papers may be submitted fr cnsideratin. The presenters will be included as part f a cncurrent sessin accrding t tpic. Cncurrent Sessin: Cncurrent sessins may invlve a minimum f tw and up t fur panelists in the presentatin and shuld include discussin f cntent and materials. Cncurrent sessins are 90 minutes and may address a multitude f tpics abut Latin America, as the MALAS cnference is multidisciplinary in nature. Presenters are encuraged t cllabrate with clleagues and prfessinals frm different campus units/ffices and/r with clleagues frm ther institutins fr greater cnsideratin. Ptential presenters may submit their papers individually and nt as part f a panel per se; the cmmittee selecting the papers will determine in what sessin t place the presenter. Wrkshp: A wrkshp prvides an pprtunity fr the presenter(s) t invlve participants in interactin including hands-n activities and discussins. Wrkshps are 90 minutes. These sessins shuld include the presentatin f apprpriate material and allw ample time fr participant engagement, discussin, and actin planning, as apprpriate. Wrkshp submissins are expected t include a chair and have n mre than fur (4) ttal presenters (including the chair).

3 Keep in Mind Abstract wrd limits: The Papers and Sessins Cmmittee may reject a submissin withut review if the abstract r descriptin exceeds the wrd limits specified in the sessin submissin applicatin. Participatin limits: T prmte brad participatin in the annual cnference, an individual may nt appear as primary presenter r chair n mre than tw submissins. An individual may nt appear as a participating presenter n mre than three submissins. Participatin limits n sessin submissins: Sessin submissins fr panel presentatins are limited t fur (4) participants per sessin. The number f participants includes the chair, presenters, and any panelists. If yur sessin is accepted, the fllwing apply: All participants in a sessin (chairs and panelists where applicable) must register fr the annual cnference by the date indicated in the preregistratin frm. The registratin must include full payment f the cnference fee. Participants that fail t register and d nt pay the cnference fee by the indicated date will nt be included in the prgram bklet and will nt be allwed t present, nr t participate at ther cnference events, including attending sessins. It is requested that Chairs/primary presenters submit papers and any supprting materials t the MALAS Annual Cnference Cmmittee by Octber 15, Presenters are expected t be in attendance at the Annual Cnference t present at the scheduled sessin(s). There is High- Definitin Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cables and mnitr cables t use fr laptp cmputers. If yu d nt have an HDMI prt, yu shuld bring the Mac adapter, if using an Apple cmputer. Yu may have yur presentatin n a Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive t use the cmputer in the sessin rm. Regardless, there are available plugs fr laptps r a cmputer t use.

6 Abut MALAS The Midwest Assciatin fr Latin American Studies (MALAS) was rganized t fster an interdisciplinary, cllabrative apprach t educatin and research n Latin America. The Assciatin purpses are: (a) T stimulate public interest in and understanding f the area f Latin America; (b) T prmte the study f the area in institutins f educatin; (c) T encurage research in the area by schlars f all disciplines; (d) T serve as a frum fr the exchanges and disseminatin f infrmatin relative t the area; and (e) T cperate with the Latin American Studies Assciatin and reginal assciatins, the Organizatin f American States, and institutins and individuals within Latin America and elsewhere, fr the achievement f these purpses. T accmplish these bjectives, MALAS rganizes natinal and internatinal cnferences that address the myriad themes reflected in the diverse interests f the membership. MALAS welcmes the participatin f scial and natural scientists, artists, and humanists frm all disciplines at its meetings and in its publicatins.
