These cmpetitins are designed fr the purpse f allwing students t gain valuable experiences thrugh the prcess f cmpetitin and evaluatin. Registratin & Fees FACCS cmpetitins are nly pen t students wh are enrlled in a FACCS r IACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup and individual hmeschlers. Fr Member Schls/Hmeschl Grups, it is the schl s/grup s respnsibility t register students fr cmpetitin. Any registratin received frm a participant separate frm the schl registratin will be declined. Fr individual hmeschlers, it is a parent s respnsibility t register hmeschlers fr cmpetitin. Any registratin received frm a hmeschler separate frm a parent registratin will be declined. Please fllw all registratin and entry deadlines. Due t scheduling and judging cnstraints, late registratin entries may nt be accepted. Fee structure will be determined by cmpetitin and membership status. Infrmatin regarding fees will be available at the time f registratin. ALL fees must be paid befre participants will be permitted t cmpete. Cmpetitin Manuals Participants are t fllw all f the guidelines as stated in this manual. There will be revisins frm time t time in prcedures and expectatins. All schls, parent educatrs, crdinatrs, fficials, and judges will be made aware f the manual versin (see tp f page) that will be used fr each cmpetitin. Manuals fr all FACCS cmpetitins are available separately at Cmpetitin Rulings All FACCS cmpetitin crdinatrs, fficials, and judges are aware f cmpetitin rules and regulatins and are empwered t make decisins as needed. Any/all rulings r decisins made by crdinatrs, fficials, r judges are final. Descriptin f Event Writing guidelines: The tpic/theme f each entry in all categries may be decided n between the student and a teacher at schl r parent educatr (fr hmeschlers). Sme acceptable tpics include, but are nt limited t: biblical themes (Gd, the Bible, Jesus, church, etc.), Creatin and nature, America and patritism, schl-life, hlidays, scial and civic respnsibility, character traits, psitive emtins, persnal challenges, athletics, etc.(except Haiku that is required t be a tpic frm the realm f nature). The fllwing tpics/themes are nt permitted in any categry: immrality r sinfulness, drugs r alchl, physical / sexual / emtinal abuse, mental illness r depressin, hmicide r suicide, anti/nn-biblical scial trends, r secular media references (music, mvies, televisin, etc.). Inclusin f any f these tpics/themes will result in disqualificatin frm judging. Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. Participants may nly use a dictinary, a thesaurus, and a King James Versin r New King James Versin f the Bible when writing their pieces. All entries must be typed n plain, white paper by a schl fficial, teacher, r parent educatr EXACTLY as written by the participant with n crrectins f misspellings r grammatical errrs. (See Typing Prcedures fr mre infrmatin) Any entry that des nt fllw all f the abve writing guidelines and individual categry guidelines listed in this manual will have a 5 pint deductin assessed fr each infractin fr nt fllwing the stated guidelines. Schls are asked t judge each entry and submit their best tw (2) entries frm each grade and categry t the Reginal Creative Writing Festival. Each schl/hmeschl grup is permitted t enter up t tw (2) pieces per grade/divisin, per categry. Each individual schl/hmeschl grup, r hmeschled participant may submit up t tw (2) ttal pieces f writing, but they must be in different categries. 2

3 Tw (2) judging sheets and ne (1) statement f riginality must be submitted with each entry. The student prtin f the judging sheets must be cmpleted. The statement f riginality must be cmpleted entirely and signed by the student. Students d nt attend this cntest. Their pieces are sent t a designated Reginal Event Crdinatr t be evaluated by judges. Participants are nt cmpeting against each ther but will receive a numerical evaluatin f their wrk based n the standards utlined n the scre sheet. Eligibility f Cntestants This cmpetitin is designed fr students in grades 1 8 wh are enrlled in a FACCS r IACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup and fr individual pre-registered hmeschlers. Member Schl / Hmeschl Grups Each Member Schl/Hmeschl grup is permitted t enter up t tw (2) pieces per grade/divisin, per categry in the Reginal Festival. Participants must cmpete n the grade level in which they are enrlled in schl. Hmeschlers Fr the purpse f FACCS cmpetitins, a hmeschler is ne: wh is nt enrlled full-time in any type f schl (Christian, private, charter, public, nline, r distance learning) fr academic purpses, whse parent r guardian has registered with the lcal schl district hme schl educatin ffice, and wh is nt enrlled in a FACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup. Hmeschlers are required t enrll at least 8 weeks prir t the event, fllw the registratin and payment prcedures, cnduct cde, dress cde, supervisin requirements, and eligibility fr multiple-entry guidelines fr each cmpetitin. The fllwing age-based chart will be used t determine int which grade/level a hmeschler may enter in the Creative Writing Festival. An active schl year runs frm September 1st July 1st. 1st grade: student is six (6) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 2nd grade: student is seven (7) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 3rd grade: student is eight (8) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 4th grade: student is nine (9) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 5th grade: student is ten (10) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 6th grade: student is eleven (11) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 7th grade: student is twelve (12) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. 8th grade: student is thirteen (13) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. Each individual hmeschler participant is permitted t enter ne (1) piece per grade/divisin, with a maximum f tw (2) ttal entries. Entries will be accepted n a first cme, first served basis. A maximum f tw (2) TOTAL individual hmeschl entries per grade/divisin will be permitted t enter in each Reginal Festival (2 per grade, per regin) and are registered n a first cme, first served basis. 3

4 Awards Each participant whse piece is entered int the Reginal Festival will receive a participatin certificate that may be printed by the schl. The fllwing ribbns will be awarded t students based n the judges evaluatin scre: Blue Ribbn Superir rating (90-100% f ttal pssible pints) Red Ribbn Excellent rating (75-89% f ttal pssible pints) White Ribbn Gd rating (60-74% f ttal pssible pints) The entry with the highest rating scre in each grade level and categry which receives at least an Excellent rating at the Reginal Festival will be sent autmatically t the FACCS Creative Writing State Cmpetitin fr judging. Categry Descriptins Tw Wrd Pem (Grades 1, 2, & 3) Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. The simplicity f tw-wrd pem helps children t be descriptive in their petic writing. Each line cntains nly tw wrds; the first tw wrds are actually the title. The pem is nt ne lng sentence divided int tw-wrd units. A drawn, pasted, r printed illustratin may be included but is nt required. Entry may be munted but is nt required. 5 Sense Pem (Grades 1, 2, & 3) Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. Chse a human emtin r anther abstract idea. Think abut it and experience it with all five senses. Write a line that tells what clr it is (nly ne clr may appear in the first line). Then write ther lines t describe it using just ne f the senses. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. The stry may be true t life r purely fictinal. It may deal with a spiritual r histrical tpic and may als include persnal experience, fantasy, mystery, cmedy, r any f the recmmended tpics listed n page 2. Hwever it must als fllw the restrictins listed n page 2 f this manual t be accepted fr judging. 5

6 Fr 1st and 2nd grade students, length must be between 100 and 1000 wrds. Fr 3rd and 4th grade students, length must be between 300 and 2000 wrds. Fr 5th-8th grade students, length must be between 500 and 3000 wrds. Shrt stry entries must include a wrd cunt at the end f the piece. A drawn, pasted, r printed illustratin may be included but is nt required. Shrt Stry entry may nt be munted r framed. Fr specific typing requirements, see Typing Prcedures Haiku (Grades 3, 4, & 5) Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. The Japanese have written Haiku petry fr many hundreds f years. A Haiku is very delicate, like a single vilet blssm in yur hand r a baby chick just brn. Many times, Haiku are written with a particular seasn f the year in mind -- spring, summer, autumn, r winter. Haiku must be written abut smething in the realm f nature, primarily a natural phenmenn. Haiku are nly three lines lng. Each line has a specified number f syllables, which ttal seventeen syllables. Line syllables Line syllables Line syllables Nne f the lines rhyme in Japanese r English. N punctuatin is used. Sample: Snwy ice fingers (5 syllables) Reaching t the winter sky (7 syllables) In search f springtime (5 syllables) D nt include the italicized wrds in parentheses in the final prduct. An illustratin pertaining t nature always accmpanies the Haiku. This picture may be drawn by the student, cut and pasted frm a bk r magazine, r printed n the page frm an electrnic file and neatly presented nt the final piece. Entry may be munted, but is nt required. (see Munting Prcedures) Fr specific typing requirements, see Typing Prcedures. Elementary Petry (Grades 4 & 5) Entries may be written at schl r at hme. 7 Entries must be between 75 and 200 wrds in length. The main judging criteria will be the cntent, riginality and cmmunicatin f the piece. Mechanics, such as spelling, punctuatin, paragraph structure, petic frm, neatness, etc., are secndary criteria. Elementary Petry entries must include a wrd cunt at the end f the piece. Illustratins may nt be included with this pem. Entry may be munted but is nt required. (see Munting Prcedures) Fr specific typing requirements, see Typing Prcedures. Tw-Wrd Pem, Sense Pem, and Haiku are nt a part f the Elementary Petry categry. Elementary Essay (Grades 4 & 5) Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. The essay must be written in first r third persn (nt secnd persn). The participant shuld first write a "rugh draft" cpy and make crrectins himself. Then he may prceed t write a final cpy. Research may be dne utside f class, but n ntes may be used during the writing perid. The time limit fr writing the essay is 90 minutes. Additinal time may be given nly t recpy the manuscript neatly. A Scripture Pem is written abut the truth presented in ne particular verse f Scripture, nt a passage. The beginning letter f each line f the pem must be the same as that f the crrespnding letters frm the name f the bk f the Bible that is listed vertically. In the number sectin f the reference, syllables must match. If the reference begins with a I, II, r III ( ex. I Timthy r III Jhn), that line may be left empty r the student may use the crrespnding number f syllables. Entry may nt be munted r framed. Munting Prcedures All petry entries may be munted, but munting is nt required. Munting is securely attaching the piece t a backing. The backing can be any type f attractive munting material such as cnstructin paper, card stck, pster bard, mat bard r ther suitable backing materials. The maximum size f the cmplete piece (including munting) may nt exceed 10 x 13 While elabrate munting will nt psitively affect the scre, slppiness will negatively affect the scre. Framing is nt acceptable munting and may nt be used in ANY categry. Typing Prcedures - applicable t ALL entries in ALL categries and grades Entries may be written at schl r at hme. All entries must be the student s wn wrk. Therefre, each writing piece must have a signed Originality Statement attached t it. See the cnclusin f this manual fr a cpy f this frm. Entries may be judged n the schl level withut being typed. Pieces selected t be submitted t FACCS MUST be typed by a schl fficial, teacher, r parent educatr and presented fr judging. N grammatical r spelling errrs may be crrected by the typist. If a wrd prcessing prgram is being used, autmatic grammar and spelling crrectin shuld be turned ff befre re-typing the participant s entry. Elementary and Middle Schl Essay, Elementary and Middle Schl Petry, and Shrt Stry entries must als include a wrd cunt at the end f the piece. If time permits, entries that d nt fllw ALL f the guidelines stated in this manual will be returned t the schl r parent educatr fr crrectin. If time des nt permit entries t be mailed fr crrectin, the entry will be judged and rated; hwever, there will be a 5 pint deductin assessed fr each infractin fr nt fllwing the stated guidelines. FACCS Creative Writing State Cmpetitin Descriptin f Event The FACCS Creative Writing State Cmpetitin is fr participants wh were rated the highest in the their grade and categry in the FACCS Reginal Creative Writing Festival. The highest rated entry that fllwed all guidelines prperly will be sent autmatically t the State cmpetitin by the Reginal Event Crdinatr. All rules, guidelines, and prcedures frm the Reginal Festival will be fllwed in the FACCS Creative Writing State Cmpetitin. Eligibility f Cntestants The entry with the highest rating scre in each grade level and categry which receives at least a Excellent rating at the Reginal Creative Writing Festival and cntains n disqualifying infractins will autmatically be sent t the FACCS Creative Writing State Cmpetitin fr judging. Awards All participants will receive a participatin certificate that may be printed by the schl. Ribbns will be awarded t thse wh place first, secnd, and third in each grade and categry.
