1 Napanee Pht Club 2017 Cmpetitin Rules Cmpetitins are intended t be cnsistent with the purpse f the club, which is t educate and develp its members as phtgraphers, and t prmte the art f phtgraphy 1. The participatin f all club members is encuraged. These rules are designed with bth beginning and advanced phtgraphers in mind. The February cmpetitin is a Digital Images Cmpetitin set fr Feb. 14, The June 13, 2017 cmpetitin is a Printed Images Cmpetitin and the September 12, 2017 cmpetitin is a Digital Images Cmpetitin. Nte: These are the rules fr cmpetitins. There is a separate dcument utlining the rules fr the annual print exhibitin. Key pints t remember fr cmpetitins Cmpetitins are pen t all members f the Napanee Pht Club, prvided their annual dues have been paid. Members may enter a maximum f three phts in each cmpetitin. Keep in mind that nly ne pht may be entered in any particular categry, i.e. if yu are entering mre than ne pht yu must select distinct categries fr each entry. The fur categries available are Nature, Altered Reality, Mnchrme and Clur Pictrial. See their descriptins n page 4. Images must have been captured within 36 mnths f the cmpetitin date. Images that have wn a prize r award in any external cmpetitin are nt eligible t be entered in a Napanee Pht Club cmpetitin. Digital manipulatin f a phtgraph is acceptable. Fr mre details, see page 3. Each image entered in a cmpetitin must have been made using a camera (e.g. n scanning) The intentin is t encurage members t find fresh ideas, t create images f high quality, t imprve their phtgraphy skills thrugh cntinuus practice, and t submit new wrk in ur cmpetitins. The Cmpetitin Chair has the right t reject any image deemed inapprpriate fr display. If an image is rejected, the phtgrapher will have the ptin t replace the rejected image. Befre each cmpetitin, yu ll find a link t the cmpetitin entry frm n the club s website 2 under the Cmpetitins heading. June 13, 2017 Printed Images Cmpetitin deadline fr entry May 30, 2017 Fr each print entry, please use the frm n the website t submit the details (i.e. phtgrapher, title, categry). 2 Feb. 14, 2017 and September 12, 2017 Digital Images Cmpetitin deadline fr entry Jan. 31, 2017 and August 29, 2017 respectively. Fr each digital entry, please use the frm n the website t submit the details (i.e. phtgrapher, title, categry) and use the same frm t send the crrespnding digital image files. Judging Judges are asked t use the full range f scres frm 1 t 10 and this guideline t award scres: 1, 2 Unacceptable, having majr faults in all areas. 3, 4 Sub-standard, having serius faults that significantly detract frm the phtgraph, e.g. subject is ut f fcus, image has incrrect expsure, r lacks cmpsitin. 5, 6 Standard quality phtgraph with sme tlerance fr minr prblems, withut either serius faults r significant strengths; bviusly nthing special abut the phtgraph. Fr example, the image quality is reduced because it has mergers, distracting ht areas, r prblems with crpping, r clur and tne. 7, 8 Superir, being better than the standard phtgraph with nly minr defects r phtgraphs with strengths that utweigh any minr defects. 9, 10 Excellent, being withut defect; clearly special and unique. A rarity. Fr the printed images cmpetitin, three judges will scre cmpetitin entries during the regular meeting in the presence f the members. Each judge will scre individual images ut f a pssible ten pints. The scres f the three judges will be tallied t give a ttal scre ut f a pssible 30 pints. The audience and judges are asked t keep a quiet atmsphere while the images are presented fr scring. There will be n discussin amng judges during scring. Judges shuld cnsider the presentatin f the image in their evaluatin. Judges may apprach an image fr clser bservatin. Fr the digital images cmpetitin, three judges will scre cmpetitin entries nline. The results will be recrded and presented alng with the prjected cmpetitin images t members at the club meeting. The Napanee Pht Club very much appreciates the time and experience that each judge shares with the club. Cmpetitins are significant in the grwth f its members. Club members are reminded that scres are the result f ne set f judges n ne ccasin. While bjective elements such as pr expsure r slanted hrizns are measurable, the subjective cmpnent is based mre upn a reactin: a human reactin, ne that will vary frm persn t persn. But verall, scres indicate where phts stand in the pinin f a particular set f judges with phtgraphic and artistic experience. Club members are encuraged t act as a judge at cmpetitins. If a member wh is acting as a judge enters the cmpetitin they will nt scre their wn wrk and, fr thse entries, the scres f the ther judges will be multiplied by 1.5 t give a scre ut f 30. As much as pssible, everyne invlved, including phtgraphers, the cmmittee members and any judging members, will try t keep all images annymus until judging is cmpleted. 3 Just as the judges d nt knw the phtgrapher whse image is being scred, there is n reasn fr members t knw wh the judges are prir t the cmpetitin night, s their names will be withheld until then. Cmpetitin Prcedure and Awards As images are displayed fr a cmpetitin, the title, phtgrapher and scre fr each image displayed will be annunced befre the next entry is presented in each categry. (This includes the nature categry: i.e. titles will nt be annunced until judging has been cmpleted.) The image is the fcus f judging. The name adds interest as a descriptive captin but is nt intended t be part f the evaluatin f entries. Only the ttal scre fr an entry will be annunced and available t phtgraphers, nt the scre given by individual judges. Cmpleting the judging f images in a timely manner is the pririty, thugh cnstructive cmments r criticism f the images that might help educate club members is welcme. A discussin f the cmpetitin images will be initiated if time is available and there is interest frm the audience. At the next mnth s meeting, phtgraphers in first, secnd and third place in each categry will be presented an award card. Just the phtgraphers in these tp three places are als eligible t receive ribbns based n the fllwing ratings: Gld: pints Silver: pints Hnurable Mentin: pints In additin, the phtgrapher with the highest sum f scres fr that cmpetitin will be annunced. The Cmpetitin Chair will ensure that a recrd f all cmpetitin results is kept and that a summary is available t club members listing the phtgrapher, title, categry and ttal scre fr each entry. Scres fr up t 9 images frm all entries f individual phtgraphers in the three cmpetitins will be used t determine the winner f the Award fr Phtgrapher f the Year. This award will be presented at the club s Annual General Meeting at the end f the year. Categries, Number f Entries, Image Titles, Digital Manipulatin Members may submit a ttal f three entries in a cmpetitin. If yu are entering mre than ne pht yu must select distinct categries fr each entry. A categry must have at least fur entries in it in rder t be judged. Befre the cmpetitin each entry will be reviewed t cnfirm that it is in the apprpriate categry. On ccasin this may result in a change in the categry assigned t the entry. Any change in categry will be discussed with the phtgrapher f the entry. The phtgrapher, title and categry fr each image t be submitted t a cmpetitin must be prvided by the deadline. (Fr print entries this means members have the time between the deadline and the cmpetitin night t ready their wrk, if needed. This is nt the case with digital file entries, which must be received by the deadline.) Each entry must have a title. 4 Digital manipulatin (see als Allwable Prcessing, n page 5) f a phtgraph t enhance its appearance is acceptable in any entry, thugh sme restrictins apply t the nature categry.** Images that present an bvius departure frm the nrmal perceptin f reality shuld be entered in the Altered Reality categry.* There are fur categries 3 f entry fr each cmpetitin: Clur Pictrial Altered Reality* Mnchrme Nature** -a general categry -digitally manipulated -generally black and -restricted t all things -indr & utdr r abstract images white but sepia and that are wild and nt settings, peple, that represent an ther tnes may be shwing human prtraits; scenery, innvative technique. used in an image f a influence. Titles architecture, flwers, etc. -Original image must have been taken by the phtgrapher using a camera. single hue. **Requirements fr Phts in the Nature Categry shuld use scientific names if pssible but cmmn names are acceptable. In satisfying the requirements set ut here, the highest level f artistic skill shuld be engaged in making phtgraphs fr the nature categry. The phtgrapher must have taken the riginal image. Eligible Subjects and Techniques Phtgraphs in the nature categry illustrate living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, and they may shw gelgy and the wide diversity f natural phenmena, frm insects t icebergs, frm waves t wlves. Phtgraphs f animals that are dmesticated, caged r under any frm f direct r tethered restraint in rder t permit public viewing, are ineligible fr the nature categry. Phtgraphs f cultivated and btanical garden plants are ineligible. Phtgraphs f wild animals in a setting such as a prvincial, natinal r state park r wildlife refuge, where wildlife rams freely, are eligible subjects fr the nature categry. Phtgraphs f animals free t ram, thugh cnfined within large enclsures r similar restraining envirnments such as a wlf park, are eligible fr the nature categry prvided they d nt shw signs f the stress these animals may be experiencing frm their situatin. The structure f the enclsure such as fences, barriers etc. shuld nt be evident in phtgraphy frm these sites. If an animal is nt raming freely r shws signs f stress r unnatural behaviur, then the phtgraph wuld nt be eligible in the nature categry. Minimal evidence f humans is acceptable in nature phtgraphy, such as barn wls r strks, adapting t envirnments mdified by humans. 5 Specific types f cmpsite phts are allwed, such as fcus stacking 4, High Dynamic Range (HDR) 5 and changing a backgrund, within the limits described here and in the Allwable Prcessing sectin belw. Fcus stacking is allwed in phtgraphy fr the nature categry as lng as the subject is part f the natural wrld, i.e. nt staged. The use f High Dynamic Range 5 techniques is acceptable prvided the resulting image represents what the eye naturally sees. The use f slw shutter speeds is allwed e.g. phtgraphy invlving mving water. Allwable Prcessing As in the ther categries (altered reality, clur pictrial, and mnchrme) pht manipulatin is permitted. Manipulatin includes: use f high dynamic range; fcus stacking; remving distracting elements; altering clur, saturatin, brightness; changing r remving backgrunds; and the use f Phtshp r similar sftware. In the nature categry the intent f any manipulatin is t enhance the natural appearance f the riginal phtgraphic scene withut substantially altering its cntent. Fr example, the remval f a distracting element such as a pwer line is permitted. Hwever, swapping a blue sky backgrund with a slid black ne in a pht f a flwer r bird is nt allwed since it mves away frm the prtrayal f natural habitat as described abve. Black and white phtgraphs are nt allwed in the nature categry. The mnchrme categry prvides the pprtunity fr these phts. Specificatins fr Digital Images Images must be sized t be n mre than 1400 pixels in width fr hrizntal images and n mre than 1050 pixels in height fr vertical images. 6 width varies: typically 787 pixels height maximum: 1050 pixels width maximum: 1400 pixels height maximum: 1050 pixels 4 Fcus stacking cmbines multiple expsures f a single scene, taken at different fcal distances, t give an image a greater depth f field than any f the individual expsures. 5 Cameras take phtgraphs within a limited expsure range, resulting in the lss f detail in bright r dark areas. HDR cmpensates fr this lss f detail, using multiple phtgraphs at different expsure levels, and cmbining them t prduce a phtgraph with a brader range f tnes. 6 Pht resizing is pssible using many applicatins. 6 Save the image as a high quality JPEG file using a quality setting f 90% r better. Aim fr a file size f abut 500 kb t 800 kb. Use a reslutin (pixels per inch) f 72 ppi t 120 ppi. Digital images will be shwn as received. They will nt be resized, crpped r rtated. Thugh it s nt mandatry, yu are encuraged t give the digital pht a filename that includes the phtgrapher s name, the title f the image and its categry. Specificatins fr Printed Images Print entries must have been taken by the phtgrapher but the phtgrapher des nt necessarily have t make the print. Prints must be presented munted, matted r ver-matted. Prints that are munted must have the munting bard extend beynd the print at least ne inch n all sides f the print fr handling purpses. An ver-mat is a reusable, hinged mat and backing bard cmbinatin. It s ne pssible methd. N restrictins are placed n clur chice fr ver-mats but it is recmmended that white r muted neutral tnes be selected. Remember: please keep yur prints ut f sight f the judges when yu deliver them t the meeting. There is n minimum print size. Hwever, it is strngly recmmended that the verall size f the print nt be less than 60 square inches (e.g. 5" x12", 6" x 10", r 7" x 9", 7.75" x 7.75"). Maximum verall size f the entry, including munting bard r mat, must nt exceed 16" x 20". Prints must be identified n the back with the phtgrapher's name, a title fr the image and the categry f the entry. Ntes: Any infractin f the rules may result in disqualificatin f the entry. While every effrt will be made t handle prints and digital files with the utmst care, the Napanee Pht Club and the Cmpetitin Cmmittee will nt be held respnsible fr any lss r damage.
