4 A Getting started fr teachers Intrductin This Getting Started Guide prvides an verview f the new Pearsn Edexcel Internatinal GCSE in Art and Design specificatin t help yu understand the changes yu might need t make t yur current curse delivery. We will prvide a package f supprt t help yu plan and implement the new specificatin. Planning: In additin t the sectin in this guide, we will prvide an editable curse planner and editable schemes f wrk that yu can adapt t suit yur department. 5 Getting started fr teachers A Key features f the qualificatin Main endrsed titles and areas f study are bradly based n the 2009 specificatin (4FA0, 4GD0, 4PY0, 4TE0) but have been updated t ensure prgressin t Internatinal A Level and GCE A Level, as well as remain cmparable t the Ofqual regulated GCSE. Curse flexibility and chice - teachers can design a curse f study that appeals t their students interests, the centre s resurcing and lcal culture and art influences. Students must wrk in ne f the Endrsed Titles: Fine Art Graphic Cmmunicatin Phtgraphy Textile Design Three-dimensinal Design. The assessment mdel has tw equally weighted cmpnents; bth are externally assessed and must allw all fur Assessment Objectives t be demnstrated. Persnal Prtfli (Cmpnent 1). Students create a persnal prtfli f wrk that demnstrates their knwledge, understanding and skills. Centres may devise any apprpriate theme(s), prject(s) r task(s) in cnsultatin with their students. They may each have a separate fcus r be intercnnected. The prprtin f the 120 guided learning hurs spent n this cmpnent shuld reflect its 50% weighting. Externally-set Assignment (Cmpnent 2). Set by Pearsn and released in January in the year f assessment. It is a brad-based thematic starting pint allwing students t prduce a persnal respnse ver 10 hurs f sustained fcus. Centres are free t devise their wn preparatry perid f study prir t the start f the 10-hur sustained fcus perid. Students will develp a range f skills and knwledge as they gain awareness f the purpses, intentins and functins f art and design. They will use their creativity and imaginatin t develp and refine riginal ideas; experimenting and building their cnfidence t critically reflect bth n their wn wrk and the wrk f thers. We have designed ur Internatinal GCSE qualificatin t be f brad equivalent standard t Pearsn s regulated GCSE qualificatin. This ensures that Internatinal GCSEs are recgnised glbally and prvide students with the same prgressin rutes. 3

Assessment Students must submit: three sheets f supprting studies (maximum size A2 fr each sheet) ne sheet f final utcme/s (maximum size A2).** Student wrk must shw evidence f all fur Assessment Objectives in respnse t the internally-set theme(s), prject(s) r task(s). All wrk is internally set and is externally marked using the assessment grid n pages 42 and 43 f the specificatin. The ttal number f marks available fr the Persnal Prtfli is 72. ** Students wh wish t create wrk that is larger than A2 size r which is three-dimensinal must have their wrk phtgraphed. The phtgraphs will frm evidence fr the assessment f the cmpnent and it is essential that they are f a quality t d justice t the students wrk. The phtgraphs shuld be in clur and f a size sufficient t shw detail f the piece, A4 fr example. It is expected that fur phtgraphs f each riginal piece, taken frm different angles, will be sufficient. The phtgraphs shuld be munted n ne side f an A2 sheet, with n verhanging r flded phts, ntes r ther material. 4

All refrmed GCSE qualificatins have a new grading scale, which means students will be graded frm 9 t 1 (where 9 is the tp grade) rather than frm A* t G. We have therefre redevelped the Internatinal GCSEs s they are in line with these refrms. Cmpnent 1: Persnal Prtfli has been added. All wrk is internally set and externally marked. Cmpnent 2: Externally-set Assignment: all wrk is externally set and externally marked. The weighting fr bth cmpnents is 50%. 9 Getting started fr teachers A Changes t specificatin titles We will cntinue t ffer the fur Internatinal GCSE titles already ffered but have nw included a new fifth title: Fine Art (4FA1) Graphic Cmmunicatin (4GC1) Textile Design (4TE1) Phtgraphy (4PY1) Three-dimensinal Design (4TD1). NEW Within each f the titles, yu will find significantly mre areas f study in respnse t the cntent requirements. The areas f study define the specialist practices within each title. It is expected that students will use techniques and practices frm acrss the areas f study as apprpriate t their creative intentins. Fine Art Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing areas f study: Drawing Installatin Lens-/light-based media Mixed media Land art Printing Painting Sculpture. 11 Getting started fr teachers A The rder and emphasis f the Assessment Objectives has changed cnsiderably and centres must familiarise themselves with the new requirements. AO1 Students need t demnstrate critical understanding f surces, and ne f the best ways is t shw that they have infrmed ideas and investigatins. AO2 Students refine their wrk by explring ideas, rather than refining ideas. They are expected t d this thrugh selecting and experimenting with apprpriate media, materials, techniques and prcesses. AO3 As wrk prgresses the emphasis is n recrding as a cntinual prcess, which shuld take place thrughut the creative jurney. Althugh frms f recrding are nt explicitly mentined in the Assessment Objective, this recrding shuld include visual and ther methds. AO4 There is a requirement fr students t demnstrate their understanding f visual language. By visual language, we mean use f the frmal elements and imagery t cmmunicate visually. Changes t assessment The fur Assessment Objectives are equally weighted and students wrk must shw evidence f all fur Assessment Objectives. We have redesigned the Internatinal GCSE in Art and Design assessment grid s that the: perfrmance descriptrs relate directly t the new Assessment Objectives Internatinal GCSE, AS and A Level assessment grids have a cmmn structure, giving a cnsistent assessment experience acrss the qualificatins. The newly designed Internatinal GCSE assessment grid will be used t assess all wrk prduced fr Cmpnent 1: Persnal Prtfli and Cmpnent 2: Externally-set Assignment in all titles. It has: six levels f perfrmance rather than five: mre levels f perfrmance allws yu t differentiate between students f different abilities mre easily three marks per level f perfrmance rather than fur: fewer marks within each level f perfrmance means that, nce yu have identified the crrect level, yu have fewer marks t chse between yu simply have t judge whether the student is just, mstly r fully in that level 18 marks fr each Assessment Objective a maximum f 72 marks available in ttal fr each cmpnent. Drawing Drawing Drawing can frm part f a student s evidence fr any f the fur Assessment Objectives, as relevant t the student s creative intentins. Therefre, drawing will be assessed thrugh all fur Assessment Objectives. All students will be required t submit evidence f drawing. Drawing Students will be required t demnstrate the ability t use drawing skills fr different needs and purpses, apprpriate t the cntext. Drawing is a new explicit requirement in Internatinal GCSE Art and Design, and students will be expected t use drawing t supprt the develpment prcess within their chsen area(s) f study. Hwever, it is imprtant t understand that students are nt required t demnstrate technical mastery f drawing skills unless this is apprpriate t their chsen area(s) f study. Rather, we want t see all students using mark-making as a way f develping and expressing their ideas. We recmmend that the prprtin f the 120 guided learning hurs spent n Cmpnent 1 shuld reflect its 50% weighting. Fr the 2017 Internatinal GCSE in Art and Design, yu can share the ESA paper with students any time after it is issued in January. Wrk n preparatry studies must cnclude nce the perid f sustained fcus begins. The 10 hurs f sustained fcus may take place ver multiple sessins (a maximum f fur within three cnsecutive weeks). We say explicit requirements because we already see evidence f drawing and written anntatin in lts f Internatinal GCSE Art and Design submissins. Feedback During the perid f sustained fcus, teachers can help students t understand the instructins and assessment criteria. Teachers will als be able t supprt students with matters such as wrking space, materials and equipment, hwever they will nt be able t give creative feedback and critique. Resurces During the 10-hur perid f sustained fcus under examinatin cnditins: in situatins where cmputer wrkstatins are situated near ne anther, invigilatrs must ensure that students are wrking independently internet access is prhibited and must be disabled n schl wrkstatins used mbile devices with internet access are nt permitted. Ensuring that Internatinal GCSE qualificatins will help imprve student utcmes thrugh the acquisitin f transferable skills, as well as subject cntent and skills, is a key aim fr Pearsn. In recent years, higher educatin institutins and emplyers have cnsistently flagged the need fr students t develp a range f transferable skills t enable them t respnd with cnfidence t the demands f undergraduate study and the wrld f wrk. Thrugh ur teaching materials and supprt ffered we want t: 1. increase awareness f transferable skills that are already being assessed (fr bth students and teachers) 2. indicate where, fr teachers, there are pprtunities t teach additinal skills that wn t be frmally assessed, but that wuld be f benefit t students.
