6 FAQ There were sme questins that have cme up regarding the Shw since last mnth s we are creating an FAQ. Keep the questins cming. New questins are in this clr. Q: Hw are the Shw C-Chairs and the ther leadership psitins chsen? A: The Executive Cmmittee Bard members with input f current Shw C- Chairs vet and recruit vlunteers t be Shw C-Chairs. These Chairs then recruit vlunteers t fill the ther leadership psitins. The Chair f the Vlunteer Cmmittee rganizes members t help Chairs, especially day f set up and Shw. This is a massive undertaking and VITAL t the ability t remain viable as a Guild, have meetings and fulfill ur missin. As ur largest fundraiser this Shw brings in the necessary funds t perate the Guild fr three (3) years and seed the next Shw that will refill ur cffers. The C-Chairs f this Shw, Cyndee Brwn and Rzlyn Warren are eager t wrk with anyne wh thinks they might be willing t take n this jb fr the 2023 Shw. We encurage yu t shadw us and be part f the planning and executin f the 2020 Shw s there is strng leadership ging frward. Please, let us knw if this is YOU!! Q: I understand the need t limit the number f quilts entered, hwever, ne per categry is nt a gd way t attain the gal. Limiting each quilter t 5 r 6 quilts wuld slve the prblem in my pinin. A: This idea was seriusly cnsidered by the Shw C-Chairs and the Judging Chair, as well as ur prspective judges (we ran the prpsed categries and limits by them). The nly way t use this methd is t intrduce jurying. The space will nly accmmdate a certain number f each size quilt, nce that # is exceeded smene will have t decide which f the entered quilts will be judged and hung. By limiting the number entered by each quilter, the quilter is the ne wh decides which is their finest piece nt smene else. We strngly feel this decisin shuld be left in the hands f the persn wh made the quilt.

7 FAQ Page 2 Q: I persnally have 3 ptential quilts fr the shw (wrks in prgress), but they wuld all fall int the mid-sized categry. I am nt the nly ne with this prblem. A: Hpefully, these quilts can be entered int different categries. If nt, yu will need t select the best f the best t enter. Q: If there is a space issue, all award winning quilts shuld be hung; thers can be flded fr display. All exhibitrs shuld have at least ne f their quilts hung. A: I appreciate yur thinking f slutins. Hwever, this is exactly what we did at the last Shw and there was a firestrm f cmplaint and hurt feelings. Unfrtunately, with an event this large and cmplex, we will never find a slutin that cmpletely pleases everyne. Q: I have cncerns with limiting the size in the Art Quilt Categry. Artists have a certain aesthetic and directin and I am strngly against requiring us t adhere t a size restrictin. A: Thank yu fr yur input. We checked the entries frm past Shws and with the exceptin f ne quilt artist, wh is n lnger a member f the guild, all entries in this categry were way under 180" (ttal f all sides) s we were cmfrtable allwing n limits n the number f quilts entered with this size limitatin. If the size limitatin is increased, t be fair t all quilt artists, we will have t add entry limits that match all the ther categries. This is nt the directin we wish t g in fr this Shw. Q: There seems t be a lt f discussin arund the categries. Hw else culd this be handled? A: One suggestin has been made that adpt the AQS Categry Guidelines ging frward. These guidelines feel very restrictive fr ur guild with nly 7 categries and ne quilt per categry limit. Yur Shw leadership feels we have the best slutin fr the 2020 Shw with ur space limitatins.

8 FAQ Page 3 Q: I have always disagreed with having tw ribbns in the Duet categry. I think it was started t reward ur lcal talent, but nw many are quilted by thers far and wide. Since it is a cmmercial transactin, I believe there shuld nt be a ribbn awarded t the quilter. Of curse, there is always an acknwledgment n the label and n any signage. There are n ther shws lcally r natinally that I am aware f that give the cmmercial quilter a ribbn. Als in yur scenari, it allws a cmmercial quilter t enter ptentially an unlimited amunt f times, but restricts the actual piecer and wner f the quilt nly ne entry. A: Thank yu fr addressing this issue. Interestingly, this was nt brught t the attentin f the Shw Chairs last year, nr was it mentined in any f the ntes frm previus shws. This has been taken int serius cnsideratin as there are many wh feel this way, and ur strng recmmendatin will be that the descriptin fr Duet Categry be amended t mean tw (2) piecers and des nt include the quilter unless they als wrked n the creatin f the quilt tp. Q: Obviusly the best slutin is a bigger venue, s I think the guild shuld be practive with the new building/hangar that will be built ut at the airprt t see if it culd meet ur requirements. They are just in the planning stage nw. A: We have visited the under cnstructin buildings yu mentin. The terminal itself is way t small t huse a Shw and is pen t the public. The cst is prhibitive t even hld a wrkshp in their small cnference rm. Althugh large, the hanger will nt be climate cntrlled and this was a n fr us. Plus, if the pricing structure is same as terminal it wuldn't be feasible. Seriusly, we have cnsidered each and every space with even the hpe f being large enugh, in ur budget and easy fr the public t lcate n the Island and even ff island. At this pint the Rec Center, even with its limitatins, is ur best ptin.

9 FAQ Page 4 Q: Why are their limits t the number f quilts that can be entered? A: There were tw cnsistent issues with the 2017 Shw. First, the rws were spaced t clsely tgether making the quilts hard t view, especially when it became crwded. Secnd, every entered quilt was nt hung. Sme quilts were displayed n the stage either flded n racks r laid n the stage. T address bth issues we are limiting the number f quilts that are entered. When yu ntice the limits, the very large quilts are 1 per quilter and 3 fr the ther sizes. Q: Hw des this affect the Cllabrative and Duet Categries? A: It depends n size: If 3 r mre f yu wrked tgether n three greater than 180 quilts all three quilts can be entered as lng as each is entered by a different member f the cllabrative. If 3 r mre quilters wrk n nine less than 180 quilts all nine can be entered, three per member. Fr duets, each persn in the duet may enter a quilt. If yu and smene else wrked n fur quilts tgether, tw in bth the Large and Mid Duet Categry, all fur quilts can be entered, ne per member in Large and ne per member in Mid Duet. If tw quilters wrk n six less than 180 quilts tgether all six can be entered in Small Duet; three quilts per member. Q: If I am a quilter fr thers hw d the limits affect me? A: The limits are based n the member wh enters the quilt. As the persn quilting a quilt pieced by smene else the number f quilts entered is unlimited, as lng as the member wh pieced the quilt is the ne entering the quilt.
