Phtgraphy as Art (3) Nt available fr Art Majr credit. Students must prvide their wn digital camera (cmpact digital r DSLR). Intrductin fr nn-art majrs t the subject matter and aesthetics f phtgraphy. Review f artists wrks that have been a majr influence in the field and which reflect brader issues in visual culture. Prjects include learning basic camera anatmy, functins, and digital applicatins. Students need basic wrking knwledge f cmputer peratin. (Available fr General Educatin, Lifelng Learning) Art 151: Phtgraphy as Art satisfies the Lifelng Learning sectin f the General Educatin prgram. Lifelng Learning cursewrk encurages students t develp an appreciatin fr the imprtance f the cntinued acquisitin f new and diverse knwledge and skills, and ffers pprtunities t integrate persnal, prfessinal, and scial aspects f life. 2 Acquire visual literacy thrugh viewing, discussing and evaluating the wrk f bth histrical and cntemprary phtgraphers. Utilize histrical knwledge as a means f cmmunicatin thrugh self-expressin thrugh Prjects, discussin, lectures and reading. Analyze phtgraphs, bth verbally and written, thrugh critique and self-reflectin. Apprach image making frm a cnceptual perspective by using the camera s frame t create cntent. Curse requirements: **Students are expected t bring their bks t each class meeting, and their cameras fr the in class demnstratins.** A Shrt Curse in Digital Phtgraphy, ed. 2, ISBN by Lndn/Stne is required. Please bring text t each class meeting. Yu will need t refer t diagrams frm the text during the discussins. Final semester GRADES will be based n: - Student Participatin, Cnduct & Attendance: 15 pints - 5 Prjects: 50 pints - Midterm exam: 15 pints - Final exam: 20 pints Curse grades f A, B, C and D are based n a minimum f 90%, 80%, 70% and 60%, respectively f the ttal number f 100 pints available. FINAL EXAM is scheduled fr: December 12, 2015 frm 8:00 am t 10:00 am If yu miss the final yu will receive zer pints fr yur final exam grade. Because departmental phtcpying is extremely limited, yu will be required t print all Prjects sheets frm the class Mdle website and bring t class as needed. 3 Equipment and Supplies Digital camera (cmpact digital r SLR): Please bring t each class meeting. It s recmmended t get a camera that has manual fcus, ISO settings, F-stp and shutter speed settings and an internal light meter. The camera must have wrking batteries. Memry Card (apprpriate fr camera) Card Reader that wrks with yur memry card r USB cable t dwnlad images frm yur camera t the cmputer Tripd: try t brrw ne frm a family member r friend. If nt, yu can purchase a tripd fr as little as $15.00 t Try Radi Shack, Target, Best Buy, Walmart, Ebay r Freestyle in Hllywd. (see belw). Disinfectant twelettes and band aids Paper and a pen Curse Handuts: Mst handuts fr this curse will be available thrugh Mdle, and cassinally via the CSUN . If yu wish yu may frward yur CSUN accunt t yur persnal accunt. Students shuld check their fr class handuts, prjects and ntes prir t each class meeting. Student Participatin, Cnduct & Attendance (15 pints): Since this curse meets fr a shrt time twice a week, regular attendance is imperative. One excused absence fr medical r a family emergency is allwed. Additinal absences, excused r unexcused will result in a significantly lwer final grade. Each student s participatin, cnduct and attendance grade will be drpped ne cmplete grade fr every 3 unexcused absences. Arriving late, leaving early r cming t class unprepared (withut materials, textbk, image files, etc.) will be recrded as ne-half absence. A tardy student must ntify the instructr at the end f class the same day r will be cnsidered absent. All students are expected t participate in and cntribute t grup discussins, lab and ther classrm activities and critiques. During critiques students are required t discuss bth their wn wrk and their peers wrk using the given critique structure and vcabulary. Students must cmplete all assigned readings. Please be certain that yu are able t cmmit t bth the time and financial requirements f this curse. Late Prjects: Late prjects will be accepted up t TWO weeks after the riginal due date f the prject. After that time they will nt be accepted. All late Prjects are subject t a reductin f a full letter grade. Late prjects WILL NOT be accepted fr the final prject. Prject Red: Yu may red ONE prject, as lng as yu handed it in n time, attended the critique and the prject was cmplete. In rder t red a prject, yu must re-take all the phtgraphs that yu hand in and yu must hand them in t me n a flash drive. 4 Missing the midterm/final exams: Yu are required t take the midterm and final exams at the scheduled date and time. The nly exceptin wuld be in the case f a University-apprved absence with dcumentatin, eg. A dated mechanic s receipt fr car truble r a dctr s nte fr a medical emergency. Any such dcumentatin must be presented in a timely manner, within tw weeks after the scheduled midterm and immediately after the scheduled final exam. N exceptins!
