2 Curse descriptin: Phtgraphy I is an intrductin t phtgraphic cncepts, materials, and Phtshp/Bridge, within a creative cntext. It is the first pht sequence curse fr art & design department majrs, and phtgraphy and art minrs. In this curse, yu can expect: visual presentatins, lectures, demnstratins, viewing f phtgraphy vides, cllabrative hands n n lcatin experiences and grup discussins f yur creative wrk prduced in the curse. It is required, f students, t have a digital camera with adjustable shutter speeds and apertures, and a laptp with Phtshp and Bridge available fr the whle semester. Instructin will be presented nly n the Macintsh platfrm, it is pssible t use a pc; hwever, the demnstratins and infrmatin will be given frm a Mac perspective. Curse bjectives: Phtgraphic images are central t tday s image-saturated culture. Thrugh this curse, yu'll becme increasingly familiar with hw phtgraphic imagery speaks, and learn hw digital images are sht, refined, altered and printed. Students will be intrduced t current wrk by internatinal cntemprary phtgraphers, deliver a presentatin f ne f these artists and develp a prtfli f beginning phtgraphic wrk. Curse utcmes: Students can expect a grwing understanding f digital camera equipment. Students will learn the basic wrkings f the digital camera and printers t effectively meter, sht, edit and print phtgraphic imagery within a creative cntest. Students will learn t make imagery frm thematic ideas. Curse Cmpnents and Percentages: There are tw cmpnents t the curse: yur creative wrk, and research. Each is wrth a percentage f the final curse grade. Yur final grade is based n the quality f all cmpnents averaged with the belw percentages. As an art class, emphasis is placed n yur verall creative visin and thus yur final creative wrk is the larger percentage f the grade. Wrking a little each week, bth with yur camera and in the digital printing studi (DPS), will teach yu abut the patience that is needed in the phtgraphic prcess. Avid waiting till the day befre a critique t start printing yur images. The DPS is ften full, with a lng line f peple waiting t print n the night befre a critique. Nt getting DPS access the night befre a critique is nt an acceptable excuse t handing in wrk late withut penalty. Engage with the curse cntent and yur prject each and every day and use the printers during pen lab times in the evening t gain practice printing. Keep a jurnal t allw yu t jt dwn ideas as yu g, brainstrm, sketch ut ideas, take ntatin n artists yu may want t research. It is yur respnsibility t ask questins in class and remain up t date n all class activities and prjects. It is yur respnsibility t be present fr the annuncements f each class. Digital Printing Studi (DPS): Students will receive a passwrd that will allw them t print n the printers fr their expertise level in the digital printing studi. The DPS (Digital Printing Studi) will nt be pen ver breaks. It is expected that students using the digital printing studi will be respnsible citizens in the studi, t include the fllwing: keeping the area clean, d nt eat in the digital lab, d nt put any unusual material in the printers, lcate any lst items in the lst & fund cntainer in the studi, and reprt any misuse f materials r equipment t the lab technician n duty and yur instructr-wpearcy@d.umn.edu. This assignment s purpse is t facilitate a pr-active curisity in anther artist s wrk t develp student s prcesses, skills, ideas and a beginning understanding f their wn expressins. Students will present their artist s wrk, inspiratins and bigraphy t the class via an artist s website and/r PwerPint presentatin. This assignment will be discussed in class. 5 Phtgraphic Prjects Overview Spring 2017 Handing in Wrk: Hand in all prjects, in the black bx in yur pht I kit, after the critique, the day they are due. Bring yur bx t class, we will label them there fr ease and accuracy. It will prtect and separate yur wrk frm yur classmates. Late assignments are accepted at the *next assignment critique and will be graded with the next assignment; with a frfeit f 1 full grade. Each assignment shuld include the number f print(s) due, a flash drive with all images sht fr the assignment rganized in Bridge per classrm instructin, avid subflders. The paper will always be the Epsn paper in the kit. Strive fr quality and meaning and d it again if yu dn t get it right the first r secnd time. Reding wrk is the nature f hw artists perfect their persnal standard and my aim is t guide yu twards becming creative prfessinals. Creative Tips: While shting and/r designing each prject keep in mind the fllwing ways f varying the cmpsitin. By varying yur psitin (standing, sitting, laying, upside dwn, frm a ladder, thrugh a windw, n yur side, etc ) yu are mre likely t discver new ways f viewing subjects and thus, new ways f understanding r experiencing. By cmbining techniques r ideas talked abut in class (hmemade tls, multiple expsures, texture screens, filter use, lens use, symblism, quality print making, burning and ddging prints, lw light shting, etc ) yu have mre pssibilities f cming up with smething riginal r creative. Tw ld ideas merged tgether will create a cmpletely new idea. Prject #1 ~ The backgrund is the subject / PLACE & TOOLS :Theme Phtgraphic Tls & Cmpsitin :Technique In the viewfinder the artist has a small amunt f space in which t cmpse meaning and draw the viewer int their wrld. The phtgrapher learns hw t manipulate that space t frm meaning with the use f these tls: aperture-t maneuver depth f field, shutter speed -t manipulate blur, fcus ring-t manipulate fcus r blur, and the view finder-t frame the cmpsitin. Explre the cncept f place as an idea. Hw can the aperture create a fcus n a place, physical r emtinal; hw can yu manipulate the psitin f the camera and use the f-stp t create an image that suggests a place? Hw yu psitin yurself while shting can give the viewer a different lk at a familiar place. A tl yu create can help develp a very unique way f seeing and dcumenting. Think abut creating a tl unique t hw yu see the wrld. Phtgraphy can be seen as a dcumentatin f time via the shutter speed; it can be a mment, r multiple mments seen as a blur.
