1 Eastern Polk Quilters Guild August 2016 Issue 188 Web Site: The next guild meeting is on August 15, 2016 Speaker Shelly Burge Traditional to Heavy Metal Shelly Burge has been quilting for over 40 years and teaching since She has traveled all across the USA and has made several trips to Europe. She is a national quilting association certified judge and has been interviewed by Alex Anderson on The Quilt Show FROM TRADITIONAL TO HEAVY METAL: Shelly will bring a large selection of her quilts and share their humorous stories while she tells how she went from making traditional handquilted pieces to art quilts made with her own hand dyed fabrics and embellished with found objects. For more information go to her website. President s Message Hope all is well with everyone. I am really looking forward to our next few speakers. I think we have really had a lot of interesting speakers with more to come. I don t know if anyone has looked at the calendar lately, but we only have a couple of months to get ready for the craft fair in October. Don t forget to use your talents to make something to sell. Also don t forget the Newton retreat next month, a good time to get a start on all those Christmas gifts we are planning to get done in the next couple of months. Take care and hope to see you all soon. Linda Northwick at or lnorthwick@hotmail.com Board Meetings EASTERN POLK QUILTERS GUILD BOARD The EPQG Board Meetings are held on the 4th Monday, 6:00 pm, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in classroom LC # 17. 2 Workshop for August STARS, STARS AND MORE STARS This class is a favorite of Shelly s students. It is a great project that can be pieced by hand or machine. The technique of using freezer paper for templates will make it a snap to sew the unusual angles and odd shaped pieces smoothly and accurately. Patterns are provided for a variety of star blocks and students will also draft their own star designs using Shelly s No Math drafting technique. The workshop will be held at Cross Creek at 1 p.m. on August 14. $25. Please see Paulette Roche to sign up for this workshop. Refreshment Volunteers August Laura Belle Proehl Andrea Clapp Sue Grant Deb Dawson Pam Nelson September Donna Archer Pam Vander Kamp Paulette Wheatley Pat Felderman Bert Warrick October Glenda Loving Kathy Neuroth Bonnie Martin Muffin Kinney Lois Kern Monthly Refreshments Refreshments this month will be provided by the members listed. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each us remains committed to these responsibilities. Thanks!! Page 2

3 Members at Large We had 5 quilts donated last month. Keep up the good work, ladies! If anyone would like to donate fat quarters for our birthday basket, please see Bert or Diana. Your Directors at Large Diana Weirich and Bert Warrick Quilters Needed for Donation Quilts Our ladies have done such a good job in piecing quilts for donations, more quilters are needed to quilt those quilts in order to get them to the people who need them. If you can provide quilting for donation quilts, please let Bert Warrick or Janet Rice know. If you are on the list for quilting donation quilts and you are no longer able to provide that service, please let us know as well. Janet would like to get the list updated so that it is accurate and people can get their quilts completed. Thanks so much! Ideas for future donations Is there an interest in making items other than quilts for donation? There has been some suggestion that we might do placemats, stockings, bibs, or other items. Please consider that question and come prepared to discuss at the next meeting. If you can t be at the next meeting, please send your ideas to any board member. We look forward to hearing your creative ideas. Page 3

6 Craft Sale The Guild has secured a spot at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church craft sale. It will be held on October 8th from 8:30 am to 3 pm. Volunteers are needed to help set up, tear down, work at the table, and especially, make lots of crafts to sell. On the following page, there is a list of possible items that you might wish to make to sell, but you are certainly not limited to that list. Please see Gundel Basart to volunteer or provide items. We cannot succeed without lots of support! Note: NO Halloween items allowed. This church does not allow Halloween items to be sold at their location. Think Fall, rather than Halloween. Pumpkins are okay, Jack O Lanterns are not. Garage Sale Mary Burns The 2016 guild garage sale will be held at my (Mary Burn s) house, 303 Walnut Dr NW, Bondurant The date is Saturday, September 24 from 8 to 4 pm. I have a 3 car width driveway and 2 car garage that we can use, so pray for NO rain that day. I will need a lot of help that day and the week before. Most important, we need donations! So start sorting out fabric, patterns, books, notions, machines, etc that you no longer need or want. I will also need lots of tables to stage merchandise. Could use help setting up Friday night and early Saturday morning. And help with taking everything down and taking leftover items to a thrift store (or wherever is the best place to donate). Someone might like to bring a few goodies that we can snack on. Lee and I will provide some cold soda or lemonade, and water. Remember that all money made from selling your donations goes directly to the guild, so be generous! Because the event is being held at a residence this year, we can advertise and hopefully have a lot of customers. The more we sell, the more $$$$$ for the guild. I plan on donating a few vintage items (including a treadle machine), plus fabric, notions and books. Please call me ( ) or (marylynneburns@yahoo.com) and let me know what you can do to help. Drop off of items will be during the week before the sale. Page 6
