1 Eastern Polk Quilters Guild May 2017 Issue 197 Web Site: The next guild meeting is on May15, 2017 Speaker Angela Lawrence Artist Angela Lawrence has created a wide ranging number of appliqué designs that take quilting from ordinary into the extraordinary. Her hand-crafted art has an inspiring beauty that draws from a variety of influences, including floral and natural elements. Angela has taught needleturn appliqué in Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota since With a degree in education, it was only natural that her love of teaching and passion for quilting would draw her back to the classroom teaching beginning through advanced appliqué workshops. Angela enjoys all aspects of quilting but her passion is needleturn appliqué. 2 President s Note President's challenge for this year is walker and/or wheelchair bags. You can use any pattern for the bags that you want or use the instructions that will be available at the May meeting. Any one who makes a bag will have their name entered into a drawing for one of three prizes. If you want to donate your bag they will be going to the organizations we are working with and a possible third place if there is a large number donated. The small unscientific survey we did about the garage/craft sale indicated slightly more interest in another garage sale over the craft sale, so we are looking for someone to be in charge of the sale. There is already an offer for the use of a garage. If you are interested let one of the board members know. I guess that's all I have. Stay dry! Visit kcrqf.com for more details about the show. In 2015 there were 700 quilts viewed. * Departure: South side of Des Moines 6:30 a.m. or Indianola Walmart 7:00 a.m. *Return Trip 7:00 p.m. approximately in Indianola *Cost $45 includes bus and advance admission (until May 16.) 3 President s Challenge Colleen Anderson Due at the June meeting This year I thought we'd do something a little different for the President's challenge. I would like to challenge all of you to make walker or wheelchair bags that would be donated to the veteran's home in Pleasant Hill and Prairie Vista and possibly a third organization if there is a lot of participation. Any pattern for the bags can be used and there will be instructions at the meeting for a simple walker bag. Any who wants to make a bag and donate will be entered into a drawing for a prize. She d like members to submit their tips to her. If she uses your tip, you will receive a prize. Limit one prize per year. ccmtm@msn.com or call Tip from Cindy Alcorn: When I asked my eldest son and his wife what they wanted for a quilt, they picked a pattern and for the colors they went to a paint store and picked out paint cards. It made it easier for a non quilter to see what went well together and it made it easier for me to get fabrics later I just carried the cards with me. Page 3

The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out.
