Doris is a Midwest fiber artist and former elementary art educator working in the arts for over 35 years. She is best known for her fused applique fabric landscapes and mini foundation pieced quilt blocks which are matted and framed. Doris exhibits her fiber art work at Quilt/Sewing Expos, Fine Art/Craft shows, and local art exhibits. Doris began designing original fused applique landscape and foundations pieced mini quilt patterns in Stash Buster patterns for fun and easy fabric gift bags, totes, and home decor is her most recent series. Always loving to share her enthusiasm for fabric and art you will find Doris teaching her techniques in quilt shops and giving workshops to quilt guilds in a relaxed and helpful style. 2 Community Service Quilts and Sew Day We are in the process of gathering and cutting fabric to assemble donation quilt top kits. Each kit will contain enough fabric to make one twin-size quilt top using the jelly roll race quilt pattern. We are cutting the fabric into 5" strips. We chose 5" strips just in case someone would rather use a kit to make a different pattern. The 5" strips can be cut into charm squares. They can also be cut into 2 1/2" strips as needed. If you have fabric you would like to donate for these kits, please bring the fabric to the guild meeting and place it in the designated box marked DONATION QUILT FABRIC. If you would like to cut the fabric into 5" strips prior to donating it, that would be great. If not, no worries, we'll get it cut! We will begin handing out these kits at the June 22nd Community Sew Day. Bring your sewing machine, beige and/or gray thread, and tools to start sewing. If you are not able to attend the June 22nd Community Sew Day and would like a kit, you can pick one up at the next guild meeting. If you decide to utilize one of the kits, we ask you to provide the batting and backing to finish the quilt. We do not expect you to have the batting and backing that day. If you would rather bring your own fabric to make donation quilts, that works just as well. If you have any questions regarding the quilt kits or the Community Sew Day, please contact Pat Felderman or Marsha Horner Please be patient with us, this is the first time we've attempted this type of project. 3 Coming up in June: June 17th Guild meeting at 6:30(note early time) President s Challenge Dorothy Stewart Award (Please remember to turn in your nomination forms at the May meeting) Salad Potluck President s Challenge The President s Challenge for 2013 is Slash Your Stash. The latest craze on the quilting blogs right now is Bonnie Hunter s Scrappy Trip Around the World, so let s see how creative we can be with this pattern. The pattern can be found on the following website The rules are as follows: Fabrics are to be pulled from your stash for the top (Backing and Batting can be a new purchase). You can have it totally scrappy or have a color plan in mind. Also, you don t have to use the size listed in the pattern for your strips or block size. Your choice! Quilt must be completely done. There will be three categories with the following circumferences: Large 181 or larger Medium 101 to 180 Small 100 or less Bring your finished entry in a paper sack with an entry form pinned to it. That is it for the rules. The judging will be done at the June meeting. Please bring your finished quilt in a paper sack with your name on the inside. I will have a few copies of the pattern at the meeting for those who do not have access to the internet. Good luck to all. Just a warning this is addictive! Page 3

Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each one of us remains committed to these small responsibilities each month. Thanks!!!! We had a great time at Spring Retreat and would like to say a big THANK YOU to Marlee Jennings. You did such a wonderful job and everyone had a great time!! 6 ANNUAL DOROTHY STEWART AWARD Following the passing of our dear quilting friend Dorothy Stewart in July 2005, Dorothy's small group, The Free Motion Quilters, came up with the idea to create a quilting award in her name. Dorothy's husband Walt was very touched and delighted by this idea and generously funded the award by donating $500. What a wonderful way to honor the memory of a wonderful quilter and friend. To be eligible for the award, the person must have been a member of the EPQG for at least one year. Nominations will come from the membership. The nomination form is on page 9. This form will also be available at future meetings. The nomination committee will be taking the nominations of guild members for the award. The information received by them will be kept in strict con idence. Quali ications for the award are: Thinks outside the box Challenges herself to do new and innovative projects Uses various quilting techniques and executes them well Willing to share ideas with other quilters Represents EPQG and quilting well in the community by participating in projects like raf les, donation quilts, and special events The winner will be honored at the June guild meeting. There will also be a monetary gift of $ In addition, there will be an award document suitable for framing and a copy of the CD of Dorothy's guild presentation. A write up will be sent to the local newspapers. The winner may also be featured in the next month's EPQG newsletter with possibly an interview, and some of the comments from their peers which motivated the committee to choose them for the award. Previous winners of this award are 2006 Ruth Chitwood ( irst winner), 2007 Reni Nalevanko, 2008 Amy Leonard, 2009 Phyllis Knox, 2010 Sharon Meadowcroft, 2011 Marilyn Leonard and 2012 Paulette Roche.
