Patricia Sanabria- Friederich grew up in Costa Rica, where her love for sewing began at an early age, stitching clothes and blankets for her dolls with her sister. Today, she is a quilter and designer, as well as co-owner of her family's quilt and fabric shop in Costa Rica. She is the author of Mosaic Tile Quilts. The quilts in this book were inspired by mosaic tile floors found in Costa Rican churches, schools and homes which date from 1888 to The floors follow the mosaic tile tradition used in Europe which often have designs very similar to what we see in quilts. Around 1900 Costa Rican craftsmen began creating and designing their own tiles. There are many similarities between traditional mosaic tile floors and quilts. The tile artist and the quilter both create using molds or quilt patterns while paying special attention to color combinations and lines. Tile floors and quilts are often constructed using a four-block design. 9 quilt projects including full-size quilts, quilt wallhangings and a table runner represent the beauty of this tradition. President s Message Sure hope everyone is doing okay, now that winter is better than two-thirds over. As far as I am concerned, spring can t come soon enough. I hope a lot of you are planning on going to the retreat. We always have a good time and seem to get a lot done. It seems that I always have a lot of items I want to get done and never enough time to do it. Hopefully I ll put a dent in my list soon. Have a great month. 2 Community Sew Day Please join me Saturday, March 19 th, National Quilt Day, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Lutheran Church of the Cross for our Spring Community Sew Day. Come for the day or just a couple of hours, whatever works for your schedule. Please bring your sewing machine, an extension cord, and supplies to sew-sew-sew!!! Irons, ironing boards and cutting mats will be available for your use. I have a new option this spring some of you might be interested in trying. It is creating scrappy blocks by sewing various size strips of fabric together. This is a project you can work on Saturday and then walk away from when you leave for the day. As in the past, I will have quilt kits available. Each kit contains a pattern and fabric for a twin-size quilt top. And of course, you are more than welcome to bring a donation quilt of your own to work on. Either way, you will be responsible for providing the batting, backing and binding to finish the quilt. Once again, I will have a list of people you can contact to help you out with the quilting. I am planning baked potatoes and the toppings for lunch. If you would like bring to something to share that would be great. The church has a pop vending machine or you can bring your own beverage. Everyone is welcome to join in the sewing. You do not need to be an EPQG Member to participate. Remember, this is a Community Day. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. 5 Members at Large Happy March everyone. Hope everyone is working on donation quilts for the Domestic Violence Center, Mercy Pediatrics and the Veterans home in Pleasant Hill. Remember that for every quilt you donate, your name goes in the box for prize drawings in December. Also remember to wear your name tags to the meetings so you can be eligible for door prizes. We also wear those name tags so our new members and visitors can meet us, know our names, and feel right at home. We've had several new members in the past few months, so lets give them a name to go with our faces. See you at the meeting! 6 President s Challenge This year we are putting a new twist on the challenge. The size of the quilts must be 36 to 40 square. Color is not important - anything you want. However the quilt must include at least one block that starts with the first letter of your first name, for example: Jerry - Jacob s Ladder. Many blocks are known by more than one name, but as long as the block name begins with the first letter of your first name, it is allowed. Please do not put labels on your quilts and present your quilts in a brown paper bag, so they can be judged anonymously. After judging, if you don t have a use for your quilt, you might want to donate it to a nursing home to be used as a dignity quilt. Because they may be going to a nursing home, it might be nice to back the quilt with flannel. As of now we have not decided which nursing home to send them to, but many times President s Challenge entries just get put aside. By donating them to a nursing home, the quilts will be doing some good and not just sitting in your closet. If you have questions, contact Linda Northwick. Strawberry Cheesecake Lush! 1 package Golden Oreos (36 cookies) 6 tablespoons butter, melted 8 ounces softened cream cheese 1 cup powdered sugar 1 (16-ounce) container Cool Whip, divided 2 packages (3.4 ounce each) instant cheesecake pudding mix 3 cups milk 3½ cups sliced strawberries Instructions 1. Crush the entire package of Oreos. A food processor would work great for this - I don't have one, so I just placed my cookies in a gallon sized Ziplock bag and crushed them with a rolling pin. When the cookies are fine crumbs, transfer them to a large bowl and mix in 6 tablespoons of melted butter. Press the cookie mixture into a 9x13 pan and refrigerate while you prepare the remaining layers. 2. Next, beat together 1 cup of powdered sugar, the cream cheese, and 1 cup of Cool Whip. Spread over your cookie layer. 3. For the next layer, mix together the pudding mix, milk, and another 1 cup of Cool Whip. Spread over the cream cheese layer. 4. Layer the sliced strawberries on top, and spread the remaining Cool Whip on top. 5. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve Page 6

7 IOWA QUILT MUSEUM OPENING MAY 21, 2016 WITH THREE CENTURIES OF RED + WHITE QUILTS CALL FOR QUILTS! The Iowa Quilt Museum, on the town square in Winterset, Iowa, is opening in May! We need your help! Our opening exhibit, "Three Centuries of Red + White Quilts," will feature 20 to 30 red and white quilts from the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s, and we are looking for quilts to display to the new museum s first visitors. If you have a red and white quilt from any of these time periods, in any size, and using any technique(s) we'd like to hear from you! Fabrics do not have to be solids, but need to read as red and white. Red and cream quilts will be definitely be considered. Quilts will be insured and displayed in a climate controlled, light controlled environment. We will need your quilts from early in May until late in September.
