Eastern Polk Quilters Guild October 2016 Issue 190 Web Site: The next guild meeting is on October 17, 2016 Speaker Cathy Busch Cathy Busch learned her first sewing-related skills after school in a small town in Ohio. She would spend time with a neighbor, Mrs. Miller, who was a seamstress. She didn t teach her to sew. Her job was to string buttons. She has degrees in education and mathematics. When she almost accidentally decided to put some counted cross-stitch blocks together, she asked the local church ladies to help, and before she knew it, she was a first-generation quilter. Like many of us, Cathy was soon quilting in addiction mode, finding ways to combine her love of mathematics with this creative outlet. As her knowledge incrased her natural teaching instinct took over. Her workshops are designed with a technical component but she strongly encourages participants to explore their creativity. She s drawn to adapting traditional pieced blocks to create unique quilt designs. Cathy has written several articles, and she recently published her first book, Newfangled Piecing. Board Meetings EASTERN POLK QUILTERS GUILD BOARD The EPQG Board Meetings are held on the 4th Monday, 6:00 pm, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in classroom LC # 17. October Glenda Loving Kathy Neuroth Bonnie Martin Muffin Kinney Lois Kern November Irene Weber Cheryl Weber Michele Larsen Marilyn Veik Refreshment Volunteers December Board Members Monthly Refreshments Refreshments this month will be provided by the members listed. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each us remains committed to these responsibilities. Thanks!! Page 2
Members at Large Happy Fall everyone. Time to get back in the swing of quilting and finish up those donation quilts. You have until our December meeting to turn them in to be eligible for 4 $50 gift cards. Next year, the charities will change, so if you want to contribute to the Women's Domestic Violence Center, Mercy Pediatrics, or the Pleasant Hill Veterans home, please turn your quilts in as soon as possible. Remember to enter your name in the drawing box for those gift cards for every quilt you help create. The next Saturday sew will be November 5 at the LCC Cafe. We had about 20 women show up in October and Linda McGee provided egg salad for everyone to make sandwiches. If you haven't been before, come and join the fun from 9am to 3 pm. Bring a sack lunch or join your friends with ordering in or going out for lunch. It's great fun! Diana Weirich and Bert Warrick Directors at Large Craft Sale Items Gundel Basart will bring all unsold items to the October meeting. If you wish to keep the items you donated, you need to pick them up. Otherwise, they will be sold to the members at 50% of the marked price. Please pick up your items so that Gundel doesn t have to haul them back and forth. Contact Gundel if you won t be at the meeting and want to keep your items. Thank you to all of the ladies who donated items, helped set up or tear down, or worked at the craft sale booth. You are appreciated! Gundel reports that the craft sale raised approximately $400 after expenses. Way to go, everyone! Page 3
Veteran s Home Christmas Project The Veterans Home would very much like us to do Christmas stockings for the 34 veterans. These men have served our country and deserve to be recognized for that service. The Veteran s Home can use the following items: Seasonal Pillowcases 300 piece puzzles 2 in 1 body wash for men Chocolate candy Ink pens and small writing tablets (Bert already has these) Toothpaste Deodorant Gift cards - McDonald's, Dairy Queen, movie passes to Copper Creek Travel mugs Plastic coffee cups Bert Warrick will have a box at the October and November guild meetings, as well as the Saturday sews for the rest of the year, for you to donate items. Stockings need to be made to put the items in and we could do that at Saturday sew days. Please come and help make stockings for the Veteran s home. Questions? Contact Bert Warrick at Garage Sale Big, big thank you to Mary Burns for all of her hard work hosting the garage sale and offering her home as a place to have it, making signs, setting up, furnishing water, and many other tasks. Thank you, also, to all the ladies who supported her, worked at the sale, donated items, or bought items. The garage sale was a huge success and raised more than $1800 for the guild. Great job, everyone! Page 4

2016 Raffle Quilt This is the raffle quilt for 2016, made by Colleen Anderson. Many thanks for all of her hard work. Raffle quilt tickets will be available at the September guild meeting. Each packet has 30 raffle tickets and a picture of the raffle quilt. Each year we ask our members to sell tickets or you may want to purchase them for yourself. You will be able to turn in money and pick up additional tickets at our meetings. There will be someone available at the meetings to collect money, make additional tickets available, and collect any tickets you do not sell. Ticket prices are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 Thank you for all you can do to help support the Eastern Polk Quilters Guild. Page 6
Quilters Needed for Donation Quilts Our ladies have done such a good job in piecing quilts for donations, more quilters are needed to quilt those quilts in order to get them to the people who need them. If you can provide quilting for donation quilts, please let Bert Warrick or Janet Rice know. If you are on the list for quilting donation quilts and you are no longer able to provide that service, please let us know as well. Janet would like to get the list updated so that it is accurate and people can get their quilts completed. Thanks so much! Ideas for future donations Is there an interest in making items other than quilts for donation? There has been some suggestion that we might do placemats, stockings, bibs, or other items. Please consider that question and come prepared to discuss at the next meeting. If you can t be at the next meeting, please send your ideas to any board member. We look forward to hearing your creative ideas. Page 7
