1 Eastern Polk Quilters Guild May 2015 Issue 173 WebSite: Facebook: Eastern Polk Quilter s Guild The next guild meeting is on May 18 at 7 p.m. Our speaker is JoAnn Belling. JoAnn has enjoyed the sewing machine since she began producing her own clothes at age 12. Her quilting endeavors began in 1965 and since then she has taught a variety of classes in the United States and Japan. The Belling household has hosted a number of quilt groups for lectures and tours. Best of Show and other ribbons have been received at the Iowa State Fair and other competitions. A total of 8 quilts have hung at Paducah as well as other national quilt shows. The Quilt Room at Hotel Pattee, Perry, Iowa, is the site for My Jacobean Garden. Concepts of color and composition which JoAnn uses in her photographic art are applied to the designing of quilts, borders and quilt backart for her art pieces and for her own quilt patterns. The workshop scheduled for JoAnn Belling did not have enough participants, so it has been canceled. If you want workshops to be offered, please consider signing up for them. The next workshop offered will be with Becky Goldsmith in August. It may be an all day workshop on Saturday or a half day workshop on Sunday. All of the details have not been finalized at this time, but check your calendar for August 15 or 16 and pencil it in. President's Note I love summer! The heat, the humidity, the bugs, everything! I don't do anything special in the summer, but everything just seems easier. May isn't officially summer, but it's close enough for me!. Another thing that is fun for summer is the ritual of the garage sale. It's fun to go to them and it's fun to pick up some extra cash if you are selling things. So..how about it? Would you like to have a garage sale for the guild? Maybe in early September? I am looking for some folks to help organize the sale, donate sewing items, fabrics, and notions, help arrange a venue, stuff like that. Just drop me an . We are almost six months into the year and we are still looking for a vice president. Since it doesn't look like we will have one this year, I want to know what the members would like to do in absence of a President in 2016? It may be time to put a contingency plan into place. Just me your thoughts and I will bring them to the board for consideration. Enjoy the weather! Julie Brotherson brothersonjulie@gmail.com Page 1
2 ***** Bring Entries Next Month ***** President s Challenge 2015 What was I thinking? It s time to start thinking about the President s Challenge Project. This year s rules are pretty simple. You can make anything that you want to make a quilt, placemat, stuffed toy, car cover, rug, napkin, trash bag liner, slippers, anything. Easy, right? Here s the catch. You must use at least one fat quarter of your most regrettable fabric. You know the what was I thinking fabric that is tucked way in the back of the closet or hidden in shame under the bed. How about that embarrassing purchase you made because the fabric spoke to you (and yet, you can t throw it out)? Maybe you have fabric that is too ugly to use as a back on that beautiful quilt or in the dog s bed (because people can still see it). There will be three prizes. The Most Courageous will be given to the person who used the most of their what was I thinking fabric. The Most Inventive will be given to the person who came up with the most creative way to use up their fabric. The Best Fabric will be given to the person who s fabric is the perfect example of the what was I thinking challenge. Your entries will be displayed at the June Guild meeting for everyone to admire. Have fun with this challenge...and yes, I did think this up while I was looking at some of my regrettable fabric. Please bring your entries next month to be judged for the President s Challenge. We re all looking forward to seeing them. Board Meetings The EPQG Board Meetings are held on the 4th Monday, 6:00 pm, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in classroom LC # 17. All members are welcome to attend. 4 2015 ANNUAL DOROTHY STEWART AWARD ***** last chance to submit ***** Following the passing of our dear quilting friend Dorothy Stewart in July 2005, Dorothy's small group, The Free Motion Quilters, came up with the idea to create a quilting award in her name. Dorothy's husband Walt was very touched and delighted by this idea and generously funded the award by donating $500. What a wonderful way to honor the memory of a wonderful quilter and friend. To be eligible for the award, the person must have been a member of the EPQG for at least one year. Nominations/Votes will come from the membership. The nomination form is your vote you are voting for the person you want to receive the award. The nomination committee will be taking the nomination forms for the award. The information received by them will be kept in strict confidence. Qualifications for the award are: Thinks outside the box Challenges herself to do new and innovative projects Uses various quilting techniques and executes them well Willing to share ideas with other quilters Represents EPQG and quilting well in the community by participating in projects like raffles, donation quilts, and special events The winner will be honored at the June guild meeting. There will also be a monetary gift of $ In addition, there will be an award document suitable for framing and a copy of the CD of Dorothy's guild presentation. A write up will be sent to the local newspapers. The winner may also be featured in the next month's EPQG newsletter with possibly an interview, and some of the comments from their peers which motivated the committee to choose them for the award. Previous winners of this award are 2006 Ruth Chitwood (first winner), 2007 Reni Nalevanko, 2008 Amy Leonard, 2009 Phyllis Knox, 2010 Sharon Meadowcroft, 2011 Marilyn Leonard, 2012 Paulette Roche, 2013 Dorothy Cowlen, and 2014 Marsha Horner.
