She taught interior design at Arizona State Univ. and at Washington State. Her artwork has been accepted in regional, national and international shows. President s Message "Spring is coming", although who knows when with the way the weather has been lately. Have you been getting seed catalogs? I really like looking at the flowers but since I don't have any room for more plants, I use the pictures for ideas for inspiration for the color in my quilts. Look for inspiration everywhere. See you at guild! Winter weather policy. If the South East Polk schools do not have school or release early, there will be no guild meeting. If there is no school that day, the decision to have the meeting or not will be made by the board after evaluating weather conditions. Remember that membership dues are due this month if you want to be included in the membership booklet. 2 Community Sew Day Please join me Saturday, March 18, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Cross Creek for our Spring Community Sew Day. Come for the day or just a couple of hours, whatever works for your schedule. Please bring your sewing machine, an extension cord, and supplies to sew-sew-sew!!! If you wish, you can work on creating scrappy blocks by sewing various size strips of fabric together. This is a project you can work on Saturday and then walk away from when you leave for the day. As in the past, I will have quilt kits available. Each kit contains a pattern and fabric for a twin-size quilt top. And of course, you are more than welcome to bring a donation quilt of your own to work on. Either way, you will be responsible for providing the batting, backing and binding to finish the quilt. I am planning soups for lunch. If you would like bring side dishes or desserts to share that would be great. The building has a pop vending machine or you can bring your own beverage. Everyone is welcome to join in the sewing. You do not need to be an EPQG Member to participate. Remember, this is a Community Day. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Community Sew Day, please contact Marsha Horner at Tip of the Month Your VP Cindy Alcorn would like to do a tip of the month. She d like members to submit their tips to her. If she uses your tip, you will receive a prize. They work as well as the more expensive wonder clips and will keep the binding flat. You can buy them at the dollar store for $1. Can t beat that price! Page 2

3 HEY SECRET SISTERS We asked and you told us, so Secret Sisters will continue. Based upon the strong yes vote at the December meeting, I assume we are going to have a record sign-up at the next meeting. Pat Meuler will come prepared with at least 30 forms for you to pick-up and sign-up for Secret Sisters. We ll start trading that night so fill them out during the meeting and turn them into Pat as quickly as possible. We are going to be 3 months behind so we will need to do some catch-up on surprising your Secret Sister. See Pat Meuler if you wish to be a secret sister for Note from Pat Meuler Please note that Mar and Apr refreshments are short by 1 person on the committee. Since our attendance at the meetings is between people, 4 people are just not enough to supply you with yummy snacks. Please consider signing up for one of those months. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. 4 Pictures for Membership Booklet Many of the pictures in the membership booklet are very outdated. We want to update them and make them current. If your picture is more than a few years old, you need a new one. Cindy Gordon has volunteered to take pictures for the membership booklet. (Thanks, Cindy!!) Please see her at the February Saturday Sew or before the guild meeting (6:30) in order to get a new picture taken. To be included in the membership booklet, you must renew your membership by the February meeting. 6 March 30 - April 1, 2017 Spring Retreat Christian Conference Center Newton, Ia It is time for the spring retreat signup. The Newton Spring Retreat runs from 8:00 am Thursday, March 30 - Saturday April 1st, 2017 at 3:00 pm. All costs are on the registration form. One major change this year: We will need to fill 9 rooms in order to have the sewing room free of charge. IF we don t fill the 9 rooms, I will let everyone know that the retreat is cancelled. Because of this new requirement, and because we haven t fulfilled the room requirement in the past 2 years, I will be implementing the following changes: 1. This retreat will be open to non guild members staying overnight. 2. I will be filling the retreat spots with persons who are staying overnight first. If there are any spots left open, then I will open it up to persons who don t stay overnight. If you won t be at the February guild meeting, send me an and I ll reserve your spot. I will also collect money and registration forms at the February Guild meeting. I ll also have a sewing room layout with me for you to mark your seating preferences and will try to honor your wishes as much as possible. The retreat provides hotel type rooms with bed linens and bath towels, wifi, and satellite tv. Again, You will not be guaranteed an upstairs room, so please keep this in mind as you consider your ability to attend. I ll do the best that I can.
