1 Eastern Polk Quilters Guild July 2017 Issue 199 Web Site: The next guild meeting is on July 17, 2017 Speaker: Linda Everhart Most of us have had the experience of becoming hooked on a new hobby or activity only to start something else once the new has worn off. That was Linda s story until 24 years ago when she made her first quilt and found herself living a life driven by infinite possibilities of quilted art inspired by the color, texture and designs in fabric. After making a complex reverse appliqué stain glass quilt, Linda developed a streamlined technique to make the same beautiful quilt in half the time. She has never cooled or looked back. Linda trademarked her technique, FUSIQUE', which is a fused reverse appliqué process. In 2000 Linda successfully launched her pattern design company Among Friends using her innovative technique. Linda's trunk show of quilts with a blast of color will amaze and inspire you to create new quilts. President s Note Thank you to all that participated in the president's challenge. there were 48 walker bags donated. Rita Prock, Pam VanDerKamp, and Loretta Greiner were the winners of the $20 gift cards to Off The Rails quilt shop. If you were not able to make a bag and still want to, please do. We will make sure they are donated. I will be having a clothesline basket workshop during the August Saturday sew starting at 10 am. If you are interested and did not pick up a supply list at the last meeting, me and I will get one to you. There is a little bit of homework to do before the workshop. 2 GARAGE SALE IS A GO Paulette Wheatly has stepped up and said she would chair and hold the Garage Sale at her large garage. THANK YOU PAULETTE! Mark your calendars for September 22 and 23, 2017 To make it a success we will need the following: 1. VOLUNTEERS: Set-up Work the 2-day sale Close down the sale 2. QUILTING SUPPLIES Fabric (Measured and priced) Patterns Supplies Kits UFO s Tools Machines Thread Etc Tables for merchandise Please price everything before you bring it to the sale. NO HOUSEHOLD ITEMS PLEASE. They did not sell last year and we had to haul away a full sized vanload of household stuff. So, start going through your stash now. The kit you bought 5 years ago and never opened, the fabric that caught your eye and you still don t know what to do with it. Do you have a running sewing machine that you don t use? The top you pieced and never finished. You get the idea. Call Pat if you have so much to contribute and no place to store it. If you have questions call either , (cell) or Pat (home) , (cell) It will take all of us to make this a success. Please help by donating your quilting items and your time. 3 Volunteer Opportunity If anyone is looking for an opportunity to help the community, there is a group of women that meet at a church in Pella. They make weighted blankets for 'Sharing the weight'. They meet at Third Reform Church at 708 E 13th St in Pella from 9-3 on the 2nd Thursday and last Monday of the month. This summer they are doing salad potluck lunch and all you need to bring is a salad and your machine. They have a huge demand for their blankets for autistic kids and would love any extra help they can get. If this is an area that interests you, please give them your time and talent. Tip of the Month Your VP Cindy Alcorn would like to do a tip of the month. She d like members to submit their tips to her. If she uses your tip, you will receive a prize. Limit one prize per year. ccmtm@msn.com or call Cindy Alcorn says: When I asked my eldest son and his wife what they wanted for a quilt, they picked a pattern and for the colors they went to a paint store and picked out paint cards. It made it easier for a non quilter to see what went well together and it Made it easier for me to get fabrics later I just carried the cards with me. Another tip and good advice comes from Kathy Neuroth Always shake your "best press" before using. The color can settle to the bottom and stain your fabric. Page 3

4 Supply List for July Workshop With Linda Everhart Basic Equipment Includes: Iron & shared ironing board; padded ironing mat or large bath towel for ironing surface Sharp small scissors for cutting fabric Rotary cutting mat, ruler & pins Freezer Paper & pencil to trace pattern unless pattern is printed on freezer paper Pattern and fabric requirement for pattern Choice of either Bear Thread Applique Sheet, Parchment Paper, or use release paper on back of fusible Havel's Seam Ripper - teacher has samples to try, and Havel's Seam Rippers for sale. (Please do not bring Heat and Bond fusible for a workshop.) Suggested Pattern: Enchanted Emerald Aisle Pattern includes 3 freezer paper patterns. Fabric for Enchanted Emerald Aisle 1 yd navy batik 1 yd green batik 1 5/8 yd fusible (12" width) 44" X 15" Backing 44" X 15" Batting The title of the workshop is Fusique, a new method of applique. Many of you have not yet had the opportunity to serve on this committee, now is your chance to show support for our Guild. Please see Pat Meuler to sign up. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Her home number is or her cell is Saturday Sews are scheduled the first Saturday of the month. Starting at 9 am, it is a day to get together and work on a project of your choice. Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member of the guild to attend. Bring your lunch and join us for a great time.
