Heidi is the owner of Hen & Chicks Studio, located in Conrad, Iowa After a 25 year professional quilting career and nearly 40 years of crafting Heidi decided to combine her experience and passion for inspiring creativity in others into a business venture. Heidi indulges her creative spirit at Hens & Chicks Studio by helping individuals and groups succeed at quilting, scrap booking and other art forms. Heidi has worn many hats during her career. She is the publisher of American Quilt Retailer and the owner of Hen & Checks Studio. Also, she was the National Sales Manager for APQS, as well as editor at Meredith Corporation. Heidi has a bachelor of Science Degree in Consumer Food Science Food and Nutrition. President s Note With spring retreat just around the corner I was thinking about the last fall retreat that we almost had to cancel due to lack of participation. I want you all to think about retreats and how important (or not) it is to you and the guild. I will be asking your opinion about this issue at the next meeting. 2 Community Sew Day Saturday March 3rd Please join me Saturday, March 3rd, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for our Annual Community Sew Day. Come for the day or just a couple of hours, whatever works for your schedule. Bring your sewing machine, an extension cord, and supplies to sew-sewsew!!! As in the past, I will have quilt kits available. Each kit contains a pattern and fabric for a twin-size quilt top. And of course, you are more than welcome to bring a donation quilt of your own to work on. Either way, you will be responsible for providing the batting, backing and binding to finish the quilt. If you wish, you can work on creating scrappy blocks by sewing various size strips of fabric together. This is a project you can work on Saturday and then walk away from when you leave for the day. Lunch will be provided. Please bring a treat to share. The building has a pop vending machine or you can bring your own beverage. Everyone is welcome to join in the sewing. You do not need to be an EPQG Member to participate. Remember, this is a Community Day. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Community Sew Day, please contact Marsha Horner at Secret Sisters, if you want to be involved in being a secret sister, fill out the form and turn it into Carolyn Larson at the beginning of the February meeting. 3 Aspen and Maple Tree Trunks 3 Hour April Workshop Cathy Geier will be giving a workshop on her landscapes. The work shop will be held on Sunday April 15 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Altoona from 1-4 pm. Cost of the workshop is $25.00 due at the time you sign up. If your guild members want to have fun, this short sweet class is the ticket! I supply all the markers, pastels, paints, crayons, etc. In 3 hours students will construct one very simple landscape on a whole cloth background and learn to shade tree trunks and draw simple saplings. This is a very fun 'freeing' class and introduces an easy technique for students wishing to add something special to their landscape quilts. Kits are required. (Kits are $17) Page 3

I m going to assume that perhaps the January people will take over February since the January meeting was cancelled. Monthly Refreshments Refreshments this month will be provided by the members listed. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each us remains committed to these responsibilities. Thanks!! Page 4

We need a volunteer to take on this responsibility. That person will see that our members and their families in need hear from us and know that they have our loving thoughts and prayers. March 3rd is the next Saturday Sew Saturday Sews are scheduled the first Saturday of the month. Starting at 9 am, it is a day to get together and work on a project of your choice. Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member of the guild to attend. Bring your lunch and join us for a great time.
