1 March 2017 Sew It Goes 1 M ic rosoft sew it goes March 2017 Reminders Remember to wear your name tags. Quilt Show Chairs will meet at 6pm. To Bring: Donation for Soup Kitchen Gift for Secret Pal Items for Quilt Show Store Our Facebook group is Lake Norman Quilters. Rene with finished UFOs and bring your fat quarter payment!! LNQ blog address: lknquilters.wordpress.com/ Membership dues are due. $20 to Dolores on Tuesday if you did not pay in Feb. Last chance to get in the Directory! March s Program Our program for March is Square in a Square technique originally developed by Jodi Barrows. Gloria Stickney is our speaker and she is a designated instructor of Jodi s technique. In addition to elaborating on what quilts can be made quickly, precisely and easily with this technique, I m sure she ll show some of her custom Wake Forest quilts as she works in the Physics dept. on campus. She plans to be set up early for those wishing to come early and browse her books, fabric and rulers as well as ask questions. Our first workshop will be Saturday, April 1st, 9am and it will be taught by Gloria. She is providing the fabric for the Prairie Claw block we are all going to make to demonstrate the Square in a Square technique. For anyone that needs a ruler, she will have these for sale along with the technique book. We still have spots available for anyone wishing to take the workshop - just me, dwaldron17@gmail.com to sign up. And just a quick reminder: Gloria is bringing her Guild s raffle quilt so let s buy some tickets to support another guild since we know how important our guilds are to our members!

2 March 2017 Sew It Goes 2 Minutes from February s Meeting The February 28, 2017 meeting was called to order by President, Judy Whitehead. There were 35 members and 5 visitors attending the meeting. Judy Whitehead showed a sample of the March Monthly Mini Quilt Block the four-leaf clover. She also showed the apple potholders accessory. Deb Waldron introduced the February program Scraps and How To Use Them by Rene Crowder. The program by Rene included many samples of different quilts using different techniques for scrappy quilts. During the program, Rene described how she sorts and organizes her fabric scraps. She also shared her approach on using scraps in different quilt designs. She emphasized that value (dark or light) is more important than color. She also noted that scrappy quilts are generally better in more simple block designs. Rene will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, July 29 using one of the quilt designs she showed us. Members will vote on which quilt pattern to use in the workshop. The quilts Rene showed us were Mile-A-Minute, Triple Four Patch, Scrappy Stars, Christmas Stars, Trail Mix, Fall Blooms, Blackford s Beauty, Log Cabin, Rail Fence and Hopscotch. Dolores Forbare reported the treasury has a balance of $9, The collection for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen was $ Dolores emphasized that if members submit their 2017 dues by the end of the March meeting, their information will be included in an update of the Guild Directory. Continued on page 4...

Members are reminded the scholarship fund covers the cost of workshops only. Rene Crowder reminded members they have four more months to finish UFOs. Laurie Jasany reminded members to bring books back the month after taking books from the library cart. Julie Murphy reported that work on the Quilt Show is progressing. She said next month sign-up sheets will be available for members to sell ads for the event. She also said there will be a contest for selling ads. Barbara Barrier said the Challenge for the Quilt Show will be blue, yellow and green. MaryJo Belk reminded members that she has Quilt Show tickets for members. Deb Waldron described the upcoming March program, Square in a Square, by Gloria Stickney of Sew Fabulous Quilts in Winston-Salem. Gloria will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, April 1. The workshop fee is $25. A book and ruler are need for the workshop, and the cost is $29.95 (for the book and the ruler). The instructor, Gloria, will supply fabric for the workshop. 8 March 2017 Sew It Goes 8 Learn More about Quilt Judging From Judy: A few weeks ago, I took an Introduction to Quilt Judging class, and boy did I learn a lot. With the instructor s permission, over the next several months, I ll be sharing with you some of what was shared with me regarding what criteria judges use in evaluating quilts. Binding and Other Edge Finishes Outer edges may be finished with binding (back to front, front to back); facing; knife-edge finish; or pillowcase style. Of course, especially for art quits, the outside edges may be raw, burned, farayed, painted or multiple other techniques. These only work for pieces that are not to be laundered. Outside Edges: Outside edges of quilt are straight and corners square. Rounded corners or scallops are consistent in shape. Binding: Batting should fill the edge finish and go clear to the outer fold. Binding whip thread should match the binding fabric. Binding whip stitches should be nearly invisible. Mitered Binding corners are correctly aligned and stitched closed. Flange: Flanges are consistent in width. Flanges are a consistent distance from the edge of the quilt or an inner seam line. 2-Fabric Binding: Top Fabric does not show on the back. Back fabric does not show on the front.
