Kathleen taught her she s a fireball of energy promoting quilting. She picked up the Modern Quilt bug about 5 years ago and has expanded her expertise in that area. Not only is she going to dazzle us with her Modern Quilt ideas and quilts, she is doing a workshop on Wednesday, May 24, a delightful Modern Quilt with Applique. Check out her website, for more information and great pictures. Look forward to a great presentation as Kathleen has an infectious personality which comes through in her quilting. 2 May 2017 Sew It Goes 2 A Note from the President... While straightening up the vanity the other day, I realized how much repurposing has been integrated into my life. Most of the containers on the vanity are re-purposed crystal or cut-glass candy dishes. (Hey, they re sparkly in the sunlight! oooh, sparkly, shiny, pretties. okay, back on track!) This made me start to think about how re-purposing could fit into my quilting world. It s already in so many craft and decorating areas, but what about quilting? My first thoughts were storage containers, but then I starting thinking of old garments. OH WAIT! We already do that! T-shirt quilts, tie quilts, remembrance quilts, art quilts, crazy quilts, embellishments, so many ways if we just think about them. As I continue on this months long journey of organizing and simplifying my studio, I do hope these thoughts don t lead to more hoarding of potential supplies. But if they do, it will only allow me to make more quilts in the future! And repurpose more containers for storage! As you can tell, I m once again in a pondering state of mind as I spend hot afternoon in the studio sewing and organizing. Let s hope it doesn t lead me too far off the path of good intentions! ;) Happy Sewing! Judy

3 May 2017 Sew It Goes 3 Minutes from April s Meeting Deb Waldron, First Vice President, called the meeting to order at 7:00. Deb also introduced our guest speaker, Lisa Alley. Lisa s program was on Calming Our Chaos and Organizing Your Quilt Space. If you have chaos in your quilt space: 1. Admit it and accept help 2. Sort it 3. Trash it 4. Donate it 5. Sell it 6. Keep it or fine it a new home 7. Clean it 8. Organize it 9. Maintain it or Don t buy it The members-at-large representatives have recommended that Show and Tell be held earlier in the meeting. Several blocks were collected for a patriotic charity quilt from last month s workshop. Dolores reported a balance of $9, in our bank account. Donna Holcolm, Chairman of the gift shop for the quilt show, asked for donations. Donations for the Fabric Frenzy (playpen) at the quilt show are also welcome. If anyone needs a scholarship to a workshop please talk to Barbara Barrier. Barbara Barrier also reminded us of the quilt show challenge. A quilt or quilted item made from green, blue and yellow only. Mary Jo Belk has tickets to the donation quilt if you need anymore. Deb Waldron asked for sign-ups for Kathleen Baden s May workshop. Pineapple Fabrics will be coming to enlighten us on their path from mainly industrial textiles into retail with a huge focus on quilting and home décor. I m sure there will be lots of samples, choice fabric lines and ideas galore presented. GUILD LIBRARY Enjoy our Guild library! Please follow our 5 simple rules: 1. Please sign out any books you borrow. 2. Limit 2 books a month. 3. Return books by next month. 5 May 2017 Sew It Goes 5 Lake Norman Quilt Guild Workshop Modern with Applique Kathleen Baden is coming to LNQG on Wed, May 24 th to teach a workshop on Modern Quilts with Applique. We are going to make the quilt shown below. In the workshop she will discuss prepping the background for the fishy quilt and then she will teach freezer paper method of applique as well as other forms of applique. Near the end of the workshop, Kathleen will discuss and demonstrate big stitch hand quilting. Check out her website, to see a marvelous example of her work on the modern improve quilt. This is a unique opportunity to stretch your quilting boundaries into modern as well as hand stitching with a darling quilt that measures approx. 35 X 40. However, this sweet fishy quilt can be machine appliqued/quilted or hand done as Kathleen has samples of both. Supply list for the workshop The Modern Baby: Easy, Fresh and Fun Quilt Designs book. Get on Amazon or she can bring copies to sell. One yard of background fabric she will bring her background, Caribbean blue, for $7 a yard or bring your own. Scraps of fabric for the bubbles (15), no need to worry about the fish yet. Paper scissors, fabric scissors and a portable light, if needed. Also if you have a small travel iron or Clover iron, that would be great. Kathleen will supply the freezer paper templates, applique needles, hand quilting needles and silk thread. 6 May 2017 Sew It Goes 6 Quilt Show News It s getting closer! Please submit your entries. Remember, even if your quilts aren t finished, you may submit the entry form as long as you have a picture that enables us to identify the finished product. Story cards need to be created for each entry please don t make Colleen do 200 at once! Time to Step-up! Sign up sheets for various posts for the quilt show will be at the May meeting. Please visit the sign-up table. There will be many opportunities for before and during the show Intake, Judging, Welcome Table, Vendors, Playpen Frenzy, Gift Shoppe, Donation Quilt, and of course setup and takedown. Blue-Yellow-Green Challenge Have yours ready to bring to the July meeting. We are doing an in-house judging ribbons will be awarded by your fellow guild members for their favorite quilts. And then you can enter your quilt in the show in its correct category, and if you should so choose, it will be judged by the official quilt judges. Ads Have you handed a business person one of our advertising forms? Keep one or two forms in your purse and give them to any local business person you have contact with. We could surely use a few more to help with expenses this year. Businesses really do want to be supportive! In the past we have made over $900 selling ads let s see if we can top that number. Gift Shoppe Items keep them coming ladies! Your work is amazing and will proudly be sold in the gift shoppe at our show. Vendors We still have a couple of open spots for Vendors. Please give Snow any ideas you may have for additional names of people who may be able to fill these spots.

7 May 2017 Sew It Goes 7 A Call for Quilts! Marian Lytle, Director of the Mooresville Library has graciously and enthusiastically agreed to display an assortment of our quilts in the Library to help pique interest in our August Lake Norman Quilters Quilt Show. What an opportunity to show off our handiwork! We are hoping to get (ON LOAN OF COURSE) 8 to 12 small or medium size quilts from our guild members representing a range of quilting and styles and techniques. Surely, you would love to have your favorite quilt in this display. Quilts need not be new. Five, ten years old? Fine! The quilts will be displayed (secured to the railing) between the Main and Ground floors of the Library from Thursday, July 20 thru Monday August 7 along with Show information. SIZE MATTERS---48 W x 60 L or smaller. If you would like to help make this a great promotion please or mail me a picture of your quilt or at least a description and dimensions. We will select a variety for the display and make arrangements to get the quilts in July. 8 May 2017 Sew It Goes UFO Challenge Rules The challenge will run from January 2016 through June When you finish a quilt please let Rene know the following information in an Your Name, Number of the quilt on your list, Name of the quilt I will respond back to you that I have updated your list with the finish within a couple of days. If you don t hear back in 3 or 4 days, please call me because I didn t get the . For each UFO that you finish your name will go into the Grand Prize Drawing. Also, you will receive a prize for each UFO you finish each month. However, if you do not finish a UFO each quarter (January-March 2016, April-June 2016, July-September 2016, January-March 2017, and April-June 2017), you must pay me one fat quarter as a penalty for not finishing a UFO that quarter. If you have completed your list before the end of the challenge you will not be charged the penalty. Along with the Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the challenge we will have prizes for: Quilters that finish half or more of their list Quilters that complete all of the UFOs on their list Most UFOs on a list Most UFOs completed I hope that you will have fun with this. 9 May 2017 Sew It Goes 9 Learn More about Quilt Judging Hand Quilting: Evaluating Quilting Stitches should be even and a consistent length. Stitches should fully penetrate all three layers and be the same length front and back. Tension is snug but not distorting. No visible knots or tail ends. Machine Quilting: All points as for hand quilting, plus: Starts and stops are consistent and not obtrusive. Tension is balanced on the front and the back, with good stitch definition. Stitch length is uniform, even thru curves and at point. No stitch build-up at points or intersections. Quilting Design: Design should complement or contrast well with the top. Amount of quilting is balanced across the top. Quilting design fills the space for both visual and durability reason. Parallel lines of stitching are consistently spaced. Ditch quilting remains in the ditch. All markings have been removed. Two questions to consider: Does the quilting make the quilt better? 10 May 2017 Sew It Goes 10 CHARITY QUILT NEWS On May 17 several of us got together to work hard and make items that the guild can sell this summer at our Quilt Show. You can tell from the attached photos that it was "tough duty." There's nothing quite like sewing lakeside. We finished quite a lot but still have items cut and ready to sew for members who would like to work on things at home. Colleen will have them available at our May meeting.
