Summer is almost past, and members are thinking and planning what they will be doing this fall and winter. Our vice president is doing a great job planning the programs for us this year. Thank you, Debbie, for the great job you are doing. T-SHIRT QUILT CLASS President s Message Quilting Events Nita Stone will be teaching a T-shirt quilt class on Saturday, August 13 th at the 911 Building on Marquette Road. The class will begin at 9:00 AM and continue until around 4:00 PM. The cost is $25 for Brandon Quilters, and $35 for nonmembers. You will need 15 T-shirts for a throw or twin quilt, 20 T-shirts for a full size quilt, 30 T-shirts for a queen size quilt, and 36 T-shirts for a king size quilt. For more information on this class contact Nita Stone. Diantha Stafford will be doing the August program. Believe it or not, Christmas is fast approaching. Debbie is trying to put us in the Christmas sprit with September's program. It will be a working meeting. She will be showing us how to make Christmas ornaments. Let s not forget that November is our Auction Month. 2 Page 2 Tips and Tricks for Paper Piecing-Lucy Large 1. This is a project which definitely requires that you plan ahead. Sometimes finding the pattern is the most difficult process of all. After all, you want a show perfect project. Copy your pattern photo, then write yourself notes as to fabric orientation. 2. Decide your color orientation and make a note, because before you are finished with this project, you will probably be interrupted. 3. Get your machine ready to sew. Put a 90/14 (large) needle in your machine, clean and oil it, wind two bobbins, the set your stitch length on your machine. I always use about 1.5 on my Bernina. This is small but I can still get the tip of my seam ripper under a stitch if that is needed. 4 Cut out your fabrics according to pattern instructions. If your pattern does not have instructions, measure widest part of the piece and add 1", then measure the length and add 1". Lay your fabrics in the order that you will sew them. This really helps if you are going to do chain piecing. 5. Trim any excess paper that may be around your pattern. Save your old rotary blades to use in your cutter, in fact if you have an old cutter, simply label it paper, then you will know its purpose. 6. This is the most important point I want to make. Lay the wrong side of the paper up, then lay the wrong side of the fabric down. You will be sewing on the paper side which has the lines on it. Pin the fabrics together in order to avoid slipping. 7.-S-9 Start sewing 1/8" away from the intersection. If you start at the intersection, you will run the risk of stitches and seams not overlapping. The same thing is true when you finish sewing. Sew beyond the intersection In photo 9, you can see where you have over sewn, and you say to yourself, well, if I go to trim, I might tear the paper. Actually it is easier to remove the paper, if you tear it. I also fold the paper back on itself, to trim. 10. You will have excess fabric to trim to 1/4", so take that yellow ruler which has a lip on it, lay it along the folded paper and trim the fabric. This helps when you get ready to place your next fabric on top. You will have a straight edge to line up. 11. Chain Piecing your blocks. Yes, it can be done. It does require organizing, the use of your fabric map and the willingness to waste thread. After you have connected your first block, simply lift the pressure foot and pull your fabric and pattern to where you can start on your next block Since your pattern has indicated that there is exactly a 1/4" seam allowance around it, you simply need to place your intersection lines from the 1st block to the 2nd block. This is what helps to create the perfect look you are seeking. 14. Always leave the paper on the back of your blocks until you have sewn the borders on. The reason for this is because some of your fabrics are on the bias, and if you remove the paper to soon, you run the risk of seams coming apart etc. 15. Foundation or Paper piecing is messy because you are continually cutting threads, so I heard about this idea. Tear a sheet off of a lint roller, turn under the top and bottom edges and lay it down on the bed of your sewing machine and let all of your threads fall on it while you are trimming. When the paper gets loaded simply peel it off the bed of your machine and lay another one down. It keeps your work area a whole lot cleaner and your vacuum will love you.

6 Page 6 Minutes of Monthly Meeting July 5, 2011 President Virginia McGrane called the meeting to order. Thirty-eight members were present at the July meeting along with visitor, Rhonda Blessingame and new member, Joan Ayers. The September meeting will be Tuesday, September 6 th, following the Labor Day Holiday. The minutes of the June 6, 2011 meeting were approved as written. Lucy Large, treasurer, presented the following financial report: Beginning Balance $4, Expenses Cindy Barnett for printing & postage Cash Withdrawal Deposit dues quilt challenge Month End Balance $5,481,09 Some of the guild members met at Nita Stone s home. The 19 quilts and two pillows made in two days for the tornado victims were shown at the meeting. Members were reminded to bring their President s Challenge Quilts to the Friday, July 15 th Gayle Wallace class for judging. If a member is not going to be at the Friday morning class, she should give her quilt to someone who will be attending the class to bring in for her. Judging will take place Friday night. Gayle Wallace s classes will begin at 9:00 AM both Friday and Saturday, July 15th and 16 th. It was suggested that class participants bring extension cords. Sunshine report revealed that Polly Duggan s husband had hip surgery. Kathleen Greer was not present and no UFO quilts were shown. President Virginia McGrane had previously marked chair 16 and chair eight. The ladies in the chairs won prizes. Sign up for Nita Stone s T-shirt class took place at the July meeting. Lucy Large presented the special feature program on foundation piecing. She passed around a handout and showed a foundation pieced quilt on which she was working. She also gave pointers on how to create perfect points. Three Hoffman Challenge Quilts were shown by Marilyn Rose, Rhonda Blessingame, and Billie Thomas. The three ladies gave out information on how to enter the Hoffman Challenge. Besides the Hoffman Challenge quilts there were eight other show and tell quilts presented. Betty Sutton won the door prize. The fat quarter drawing was won by Melainie Priest who chose purple for the August fat quarter.
