Dear Guild Members, President Letter Can you believe we are already one month into 2019? I just can t believe how fast time is going. Our last meeting was so informational with our 2019 Guild Calendar being passed out, the tip that Bobbi shared was great, the introduction to our BOM program, and I saved the best for last, our main Theme for the evening, Beginnings! Alice, thank you so much for sharing your quilts and getting us started. The quilts and stories on how we all started to sew/quilt was so wonderful to see and hear. Thank you everyone for sharing! We also had a visitor named Leah who joined us for the evening. And, let s not forget the wonderful snacks that were provided. Wow were they perfect, thank you. There were multiple Retreat sign-up sheets available for members to participate, if you have any questions, please contact Diane M. I can go on and on with how much I personally enjoyed the meeting, but let s look at February s agenda. We have a special speaker coming to go over ergonomics and exercises for when we are sewing. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring questions that you might have for when you re doing your craft. I m wondering how often we should get up and move, what s the proper height for the cutting table, etc. We will also have a drawing for members who bring in their completed BOM from January. Sign-ups for Retreat will be available as well. This is just a glimpse of what s to come at our next meeting. I m hoping that you all have a wonderful February and I look forward to seeing you at the February 25 th meeting. Becky Page 1

The bonus to this raffle is - Members get to highlight other items that they like to make Multiple winners Page 3

4 WHAT DO I DO WITH THESE? Empty thread spools - Save your empties and bring them to Susan or Dawn. An acquaintance of ours takes these to the children s museum for the children to build with. What a great way to repurpose these. Those pretty selvages - Please save for Dawn. She s trying to collect enough to make a quilt top or even a group project. Please also include some of the fabric. Fabric scraps - Debbie loves those little scraps and Dawn enjoys working with larger scraps. Bring to guild meetings. Non Useable fabric and batting scraps - Save these unusable pieces and recycle them. RECYCLE THEM! How do I do that? Take them to the Goodwill or Value Village and mark as TEXTILE RECYCLING or bring to a meeting and give to Susan or Dawn for recycling. Page 4

6 Everett Quilt Guild Minutes January 28, 2019 Meeting was called to order at 6:05 by Pres. Becky P. We had one visitor tonight - Leah Former President Debbie L was presented with a quilt for her service to the guild. VP Dawn J. has created a yearly calendar listing planned activities through December of Each member was given a copy of the calendar. It will be published in the newsletter. Please check monthly for updates and changes. Dawn handed out paper and we played a game. The result - we saw that we all did the same thing but we all had different results. The goal of the game - we all quilt but we all may do it differently. There are multiple ways to do anything. Pat explained the guild's Block of the Month program and showed us the block for January. Instructions for each month's block will be in the newsletter and on the website. An overview of the program was published in the January newsletter. There will be a drawing each month for those who have completed their blocks. In November there will be a drawing for those who completed their blocks each month. Cynthia will be creating a form for each member to keep track of their progress. Bring your finished block each month and have Pat sign your form. Bring in your form at the end of the program to enter the challenge drawing. Becky reminded us that members are available 30 minutes before meetings and during our break time to answer any quilting questions including ones about the Block of the Month. Committee Reports: Donna will be Debbie's backup during tax season for the 6" square exchange. Please bring your cut squares to the meeting. If you are late, please get them to Debbie ASAP. Please e- mail Debbie if your blocks are going to be late. February's theme - Sewhawks. Diane M. announced that this was the last day to make your retreat deposit. Anyone signing up after today must pay the entire retreat fee. The balance of all retreat fees are due by the March meeting. Please see Diane if you are unsure of the amount you still owe. Signup sheets for meals and other retreat activities and needs were available for retreat participants. Please take the time to sign up for at least one task. Anything for the Newsletter or Website needs to be to Diane C. by the 1st of each month. Becky invited us to look at the displayed quilts we have completed for Clare's Place (transitional housing) while we were getting our snacks. All quilt tops must be turned in by March 25th to give the longarmers and binders time complete the quilts before the opening of Clare's Place. Alice C. presented a mini trunk show of her quilting history. We each took a turn to show our first quilts or to tell our personal quilting history. Bobby S. shared how to square up fabric using multiple rulers and how to use your ruler to fold fabric. Dawn conducted a drawing for those who completed a part of a Clare's Place or Firehouse quilt. Winners were Laurie, Debbie, Rachel, and Eileen. Respectfully submitted Page 6 Pat J Secretary

8 Instructions to make Hour Glass Blocks 1. Select 8 squares of fabric and sew together 4 squares using a 1/4 seam allowance. Press seams as you sew. This yields 2 blocks containing 4 squares each. (6 squares will measure approximately 11 1/2 ) 2. Place the two blocks right side to right side. Line up the center point of the two blocks and the edges. 3. Sew around the outside edge using a 1/4 seam allowance joining the two blocks to form 1 block. 4. Cut the block diagonally two times (Cut once corner to corner, turn, and cut again corner to corner. Page 8

9 5. Press the seams on all 4 pieces forming 4 squares. And resize the squares. (for 6 starting squares resize to 7 1/2 ) 6. Sew the four squares together to form 1 big square and trim to final size plus seam allowance. (for 6 starting squares finished size will be 14 1/2 ) Example: Using 8 4 x4 squares makes approximately 1 9 1/2 square Page 9

10 February 2019 Everett Quilt Guild Spring Retreat May 2 thru May 6, 2019 (Thursday thru Monday) Camp Casey - Whidbey Island Ya whoooo only 3 months till retreat! It s coming up fast and lots to do. Just a few quick things listed below for retreat Still not too late to sign up for retreat so far we have 18 going, spread the word, invites other quilters you may know outside of the guild, at least 4 more would fill the sewing room and help keep additional costs down. Remember the less people we have the more it will cost per day per person. About $5.00 per day per person if we are short people. Please look over the sign-up sheets and volunteer at the next meeting. Many things are still needed. There are few retreaters that still need to pay the balance of their $70.00 deposit, please do so by the next meeting February 25. If you re not sure of your balance refer to your last receipt or me. Reminder TOTAL BALANCE IN FULL IS DUE BY MARCH or sooner. There have been a few areas of confusion in regard to the meal teams so as a reminder see below: Meals groups are a team effort, sharing all the responsibility in planning, purchasing costs, prepping, preparing, serving and clean up. To be fair everyone is require to participate in at least one meal. All but one person has signed up for meals. A few meals have 3 people, and one dinner meal has someone by them self. We only have 18 signed up to go to retreat and 11 meals to fill. That is why I stated on the meal sign-up sheet 1 or 2 only per meal. We could make Monday breakfast be a LEFT OVER BREAKFAST to help clean out the fringe, this would bring us down to 10 meals. We need to even this out or we will have one to two empty meals. So please look over the meal menu again at the next meeting. A full detailed meal menu will be needed by the March 25 th meeting from each meal team so I can be put into the last newsletter before retreat for all to see. (I pushed this out because we need to address the missing meal coverage first). Again any question, ideas or suggestions please let me know. Diane M Retreat Chairman Page 10

12 Everett Quilt Guild Block of the Month General Instructions: Each month for 11 months a different block or sashing instruction will be published in the Newsletter and posted on the guild's website (everettquiltguild.org). Each month's block focuses on specific Skill Builders to practice and improve our piecing skills. Step by step samples and a finished block will be available at each guild meeting. As the blocks become more intricate or introduce a more challenging skill set, we can present a step by step PowerPoint at the guild meeting, have members available to answer questions and provide suggestions, and if there is enough interest, conduct hands on workshops to sew blocks. The Challenge: Using the block instructions, construct your quilt block using any fabric you choose. Bring your finished block to the following month's meeting and your name will be entered in a drawing for that month. (Following month's meeting - block published in January. Complete and bring your block to the February guild meeting.) For those who bring the finished block every month for the first 10 months, your names will go into the " Completed the Challenge" drawing. Bring your finished quit top to the January 2020 meeting to be eligible for the grand prize. Bonus Blocks - the quit is designed to have 12 blocks and we will officially only be making 10 blocks. I will publish two additional optional blocks. You may choose to include them in your quit, pick your own two blocks, or use 12" fabric squares for the two extra blocks. Bonus blocks are not entered into the monthly or " Completed the Challenge" drawing. Quilt Details: The finished quilt will measure 48" X 62". It will have finished 2" sashing strips and a finished 4" border. Fabric for sashing and borders - 1 3/4 yards. Fabric for sashing corner stone piecing - 1/8 yard Block Fabrics - Total yardage about 5 yards of assorted fabrics. If you are using fat quarters I suggest you purchase 10 to 12 coordinated fabrics. pj/2019 Page 12

16 QuiltWorks and Beads & Beyond - has been through significant changes in the last 15 years and I'm thankful for every moment, every person and every experience. I hope all of you have been touched in some good way by the products, services, inspiration, creativity and laughter we've provided over the years. I know I have. There could never be the right time to exit, but industry and life influences make this the time for us. Starting, February 1, we will begin a clearance sale at 30% off. That sale will continue through February. We will continue to offer sewing machine service, hold classes and honor our commitments through the sale and cleanup period. If you have any questions, please ask. Using the words Carol Burnett sung to end every show, I'm so glad we had this time together...before you know it, comes the time we have to say So Long. The 6th Annual Snowflakes and Stitches Shop Hop February 2-23, 2019 (Oregon and Washington) Every single shop has agreed to extend this event for one additional week - the new end date for the Shop Hop will be Saturday February 23rd (one extra week).
