2 FAT QUARTER Size: 34" 45" Quilt by Evelyn Young. F R I E N D L Y Zig and Zag This quilt was designed by Evelyn Young as a National Quilting Day project for her guild. Make it with lots of fabrics for a scrappy look, or just a few for a more subtle design. Materials 6 fat quarters* assorted prints in yellow, pink, green, blue, and lavender 1 yard white solid ½ yard light blue print for setting triangles Fons & Porter Easy Diagonal Sets Ruler (optional) 1½ yards backing fabric Crib-size quilt batting *fat quarter = 18" 20" Cutting Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Instructions are written for using the Fons & Porter Easy Diagonal Sets Ruler. For instructions on using this ruler, go to Sew Easy: Cutting Setting Triangles on page 6. If not using this ruler, follow cutting Note. 22 (2½"-wide) strips for strip sets. 10 (2¼"-wide) strips for binding. 11 (2½"-wide) strips. 3 Quilt Strip Set Assembly Diagram 1. Lay out segments and setting triangles as shown in Quilt Top Assembly Diagram. 2. Join into diagonal rows; join rows to complete quilt top. Finishing 1. Layer backing, batting, and quilt top; baste. Quilt as desired. Quilt shown was quilted in the ditch and with wavy lines in zigzags (Quilting Diagram). 2. Join 2¼"-wide assorted print strips into 1 continuous piece for straight-grain French-fold binding. Add binding to quilt. 6 Sew Easy Watch a video of this Sew Easy online at Cutting Setting Triangles With the Fons & Porter Easy Diagonal Sets Ruler, cutting the side and corner setting triangles for diagonally set quilts is a snap all the math is done for you! Cut side and corner setting triangles from the same width strip. A B Cutting Side Setting Triangles 1. On the Diagonal Sets Ruler, find the black line that corresponds to your finished block size. (For Zig and Zag, use the 4" block line.) Sew Smart Tip: If your blocks finish in a fraction of an inch or you want to float your blocks in a diagonal set, use the next largest block size. Marianne 2. Cut a fabric strip the width indicated along the edge of the ruler. (For Zig and Zag, cut strip 3 3 8" wide.) 3. Open out strip so you will cut through a single layer. From strip, cut side setting triangles by first placing the black cutting guideline along bottom edge of strip, then top edge (Photo A). Cutting Corner Setting Triangles 1. On the Diagonal Sets Ruler, find the yellow line that corresponds to your finished block size. 2. Cut a strip that width. 3. Cut corner setting triangles from strip by first aligning the yellow cutting guideline along bottom edge of cut strip and then along top edge (Photo B). Sew Smart Tip: Use the same width strip to cut both the side and corner setting triangles. If you are short on fabric, first cut a corner setting triangle (yellow lines) from the strip; then, cut the remainder of the strip into side setting triangles and finish by cutting a corner setting triangle.
