She came up with Shaggy Pumpkins, a cozy lap-size quilt you can snuggle under when the weather turns crisp. Designer Profile Lyndsay Sharratt is involved in many aspects of quilting. 3 Cutting Measurements include 3 4" seam allowances. Patterns for appliqué pieces are on pages 4 and 5. From each dark homespun, cut: 1 (11 1 2"-wide) strip. Cut strip into 3 (11 1 2") squares. 3 (7 1 2"-wide) strips. Cut strips into 12 (7 1 2") squares. From each light homespun, cut: 1 (11 1 2"-wide) strip. Cut strip into 3 (11 1 2") squares. 3 (7 1 2"-wide) strips. Cut strips into 12 (7 1 2") squares. From green fat eighth, cut: 17 stems. From batting, cut: 72 (4 1 2") squares. Cut squares in half diagonally to make 144 triangles. 17 (9 1 2") squares. Diamond Block Assembly (For more detailed instructions for the rag technique, see Sew Easy: Rag Quilts, page 5.) 1. Choose 4 light 7 1 2" squares and 4 dark 7 1 2" squares. Place 1 light square atop each dark square. 2. Cut each pair of squares in half diagonally. Flip 4 of the triangle pairs over so the dark triangle is on the top. 3. Referring to Triangle-square Diagram, join 1 light triangle pair to 1 dark triangle pair with a 3 4" seam. Triangle-square Diagram Seam allowances will be on right side. Press seams open and trim corners. Repeat to make 4 triangle-squares. Insert batting triangles between triangle-squares. 4. Arrange triangle-squares as shown in Block Assembly Diagram. Using 3 4" seams, join squares into rows; join rows. Press seams open. Using a walking foot, quilt an X from corner to corner to complete 1 Diamond block (Diamond Block Diagram). The side with the seam allowances is the front. Make 18 Diamond blocks. (Note: The Diamond blocks will have the colors reversed on the back side. See Diamond Block Diagram - Back.) Pumpkin Block Assembly (For more detailed instructions for making chenille, see Sew Easy: Faux Chenille.) 1. Layer 4 orange homespun fat quarters to make 1 chenille unit. Spray baste layers together. Make 3 layered units. 2. Mark 45-degree angle on chenille unit with chalk pencil. Using walking foot, stitch on marked line. Stitch lines parallel to the first line, 1 2" 3 4" apart, until the piece is completely stitched. 2 Fons & Porter s Love of Quilting Patterns

Chenille Appliqués Begin by following steps 1 3 for Basic Chenille Technique to create a piece of faux chenille large enough to cut 1 or more appliqué pieces. 1. Trace and cut out appliqué pattern from freezer paper or other sturdy paper to use as template.

For background, cut 2 pieces of fabric, 1 for project back and 1 for project front, the size of desired background piece plus seam allowances. Cut 1 piece of low-loft batting the finished size of background piece (or slightly smaller). 4. Place background piece that will be on back of project wrong side up. Lightly spray wrong side of fabric with temporary fabric adhesive. Center batting atop sprayed fabric. Machine stitch diagonally from corner to corner across layered batting and fabric (Photo C). 5. Lightly spray batting with temporary spray adhesive. Position top background piece atop batting. Spray wrong side of chenille appliqué with temporary spray adhesive and position chenille appliqué and other elements on prepared background. To speed up fraying when you wash your rag quilt for the first time, add 1 or 2 pairs of faded blue jeans to bump against the quilt in the washer and dryer.

Machine wash and dry finished project to fray the exposed seams. To speed up fraying when you wash your rag quilt for the first time, add 1 or 2 pairs of faded blue jeans to bump against the quilt in the washer and dryer. Clean the lint filter on your dryer frequently (as often as every 5 10 minutes) since it will collect lots of lint when you launder a rag project for the first time. Marianne Basic Chenille Technique 1. Spray right side of fabric piece with temporary fabric adhesive. Add next fabric and spray. In this manner, stack and baste 3 5 layers of fabric. 2. Mark a diagonal line across fabric on the bias. Using a walking foot, machine stitch along line. Using width of walking foot as a guide, stitch lines parallel to first stitching line ( 3 8" 3 4" apart) until piece is completely stitched. 3. Cut between all rows of stitching. For most chenille projects, cut through all layers except the bottom layer.to cut using mat strips, choose a strip that fits between rows of stitching. Slip mat strip between the bottom layer and next layer. Use a ruler to guide rotary cutter as you cut.the mat strip protects the bottom fabric layer from being cut. (Photo A). 6 3. Trace pumpkins onto freezer paper with a permanent marker. Make several copies. (Freezer paper patterns can be reused several times.) Cut out patterns and iron freezer paper onto the chenille units. Cut out 17 pumpkins. Lyndsay made 11 tall pumpkins and 6 short pumpkins. 4. Remove paper patterns, and cut between the stitched lines on pumpkins to make chenille. 5. Trace stem on paper side of fusible web. Cut on drawn line and fuse web to wrong side of green fabric. Cut fabric a scant 1 4" outside the fusible web. 6. Position 1 (9 1 2") batting square atop 1 (11 1 2") dark homespun square. Stitch an X from corner to corner of homespun square to join layers. Add light square atop. 7. Layer pumpkin atop the prepared square. Stitch 1 4" inside the edge of the pumpkin and stem to make 1 Pumpkin block. Make 17 Pumpkin blocks. Quilt Assembly 1. Referring to photo on page 8, lay out Pumpkin blocks and Diamond blocks. 2. Using 3 4" seams, join blocks into rows; join rows to complete quilt. Press seams open. Finishing 1. Referring to Sew Easy: Rag Quilts, snip seam allowances approximately every 1 2". 2. Machine wash and dry quilt to fray seams and chenille. Rag Quilts 1. Cut fabric pieces to allow for 3 4" seam allowances. Cut low-loft batting scraps finished size of patchwork pieces (or slightly smaller).

For the projects in this magazine, we have specified the sizes for you to cut all pieces. 2. Place pairs of fabric pieces wrong sides together. Pieces can match or contrast. For a warmer quilt, slip and center a piece of low-loft batting between fabric pieces (Photo A). A 3. For large rectangular or square pieces, machine quilt diagonally from corner to corner to secure batting before joining them to other pieces. 4.
