Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. 4 BUTTERFLY GARDEN What You Will Need 3.1m (3 3/8 yards) of solid light cream fabric for the sashing strips, appliqué and first border 50cm (5/8 yard) each of solid light pink, solid medium pink, solid light green, and solid medium green fabric for the striped panels and appliqué 1.5m (1 3/4 yards) of solid dark pink fabric for the striped panels, appliqué and binding 1.6m (1 3/4 yards) of dark pink multi stripe fabric for the striped panels and the second border 30cm (3/8 yard) each of cream multi-stripe, taupe spot, light green spot, medium green spot, and cream small floral print fabric for the striped panels 40cm (1/2 yard) each of medium pink spot fabric and dark pink spot fabric for the striped panels and appliqué (1) fat quarter of solid dark green fabric for the appliqué flower stems (1) fat eighth of light pink check fabric for the appliqué A scrap of light gold fabric for the appliqué (butterfly body shapes) Lightweight fusible webbing Stranded embroidery thread for the butterfly s feelers Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 95 1/2in x 98 1/2in 2.5m (2 3/4 yards) of coordinating 108in wide backing fabric General sewing supplies Cutting Instructions TIP Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt. 1. From the solid light cream fabric, cut: (4) strips, 16 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut a total of (104) 1 1/2in x 16 1/2in strips. (5) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut a total of (130) 1 1/2in x 2 1/2in strips. (22) strips, 1 1/2in x WOF for the sashing strips. 2. From each of the solid light pink, solid medium pink, solid light green, solid medium green, cream multi-stripe, taupe spot, medium pink spot, dark pink spot, light green spot, medium green spot, and cream small floral print fabrics cut: (4) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (8) 2 1/2in x 16 1/2in rectangles and (10) 2 1/2in squares to give a total of (88) rectangles and (110) squares. 3. From the solid dark pink fabric, cut: (4) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (8) 2 1/2in x 16 1/2in rectangles and (10) 2 1/2in squares. (10) strips, 3in x WOF for the binding. 4. From the dark pink multi-stripe fabric, cut: (4) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (8) 2 1/2in x 16 1/2in rectangles and (10) 2 1/2in squares. (7) strips, 4 1/2in x WOF for the second border. (3) strips, 6 1/2in x WOF for the second border. How to Make the Quilt 1. Trace the applique shapes from the template pages onto the paper side of the fusible webbing using a sharp pencil; leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. You will need to trace (11) flowers and their centres, (11) leaf shapes, (2) of butterfly one, (7) of butterfly two, and (3) of butterfly three. 2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong sides of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Set aside. 3. Fuse a fat quarter sized piece of fusible webbing to the wrong side of the fat quarter of solid dark green fabric, then cut the following strips directly from the fabric. (4) strips measuring 1in x 20in for the long flower stems, (4) strips measuring 1in x 14in for the medium flower stems, and (3) strips measuring 1in x 10in for the short flower stems. Set them aside.

5 4. You will need to make (4) 16 1/2in wide panels and (5) 2 1/2in wide panels for the quilt centre. All (9) panels follow the same fabric pattern and are matching. Use the colour photograph and Diagram 1 as a guide throughout. 5. Sew (26) 2 1/2in x 16 1/2in assorted coloured strips together along the long edges, alternating them with the 1 1/2in x 16 1/2in light cream strips as you sew. Start with a light green spot rectangle and finish with a light cream strip. Press the seams towards the coloured rectangles. See Diagram 1. Make a total of (4) matching 16 1/2in wide panels. 6. Repeat to make (5) matching 2 1/2in wide panels using the 2 1/2in coloured squares and the 1 1/2in x 2 1/2in light cream strips. 7. The finished panels will measure approx. 78 1/2in in length. Because of differences in seam allowances between sewing machines your measurement may be different to mine. Measure the length of each of the panels, they should all be of the same length. If the lengths of the panels vary by more than 1/4in unpick some of the seams and adjust them by using a smaller or larger seam allowance. 8. Sew the (22) 1 1/2in solid light cream strips together end to end in pairs, using diagonal seams, to make (11) separate strips. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Trim (10) strips to measure the same length as the striped panels. Set the remaining strip aside. 9. Use the colour photograph and Diagram 1 as a guide to lay out the (9) panels and (10) cream sashing strips on a flat surface. The cream sashing strips are placed between the panels and on the outside edge of the side panels. When you are happy with the layout, pin and then sew the rows together. Press the seams towards the sashing strips. Do your best to align the horizontal stripes across the width of the quilt. Use the butterfly applique to cover any places where the rows don t match up properly! 10. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and trim the remaining light cream sashing strip to this length. Pin and then sew it to the top of the quilt and press the seams outwards. 11. Remove the backing paper from the applique shapes, and use the photograph as a guide to fuse the appliqué to the quilt top, overlapping them where required. The raw bottom edge of the flower stems align with the bottom raw edge of the quilt top. Don t fuse leaves on the quilt yet, they are added later. 12. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using handstitched blanket stitch and matching thread. Use a light, sharp pencil to draw the feelers on the butterflies. Use contrasting thread to backstitch the butterfly feelers, then sew a French knot to each end of the feelers to finish. Diagram 1 The fabrics in the panels are sewn together in the following order: light green spot fabric, solid dark pink fabric, cream stripe fabric, medium pink spot fabric, solid medium green fabric, cream small floral print fabric, solid medium pink fabric, taupe spot fabric, solid light green fabric, dark pink spot fabric dark pink multi-stripe fabric, medium green spot fabric, and solid light pink fabric. Repeat the fabric pattern twice.

6 13. Sew the (7) 4 1/2in dark pink multi-stripe strips together end to end using straight seams to preserve the striped pattern. Press the seams open. 14. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left and right-hand sides of the quilt. Press the seams outwards. 15. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut (1) strip to this length. Sew it to the top of the quilt. Press the seams outwards. 16. Sew the (3) 6 1/2in dark pink multi-stripe strips end to end using straight seams to preserve the striped pattern. Press the seams open. 17. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut (1) strip to this length. Sew it to the bottom of the quilt. Press the seams outwards. 18. Use the photograph as a guide to fuse the leaves to the quilt top, over-lapping them where required. Stitch around the shapes as before. 19. Trim the backing fabric to make a piece measuring approx. 95 1/2in x 98 1/2in. 20. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting from the centre and work your way out to the edges. 21. Sew the (10) solid dark pink binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Fold the binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and press well. Bind, label and date your quilt to finish. Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
