2 Making Half square triangles with this simple method is so easy and fast, it is wonderful for Beginner Quilters. This pattern is written for a small throw (the size we made, shown in the picture) or follow the changes for A Queen Bed size, both are put together lickety split! You will need: Throw Size Quilt: *15 fabrics in cheery co-ordinating colors, ¼ yard each(you will have some extra) or a Fat Eighth. We used a combination of several Riley Blake collections. *1 ¾ yard of off white fabric or whatever color you would like for your background.some of our Beginning Quilting students have used Black or Gray instead of white and the results were just beautiful! *3 ½ yards of backing fabric, you will need to piece your back. *a piece of batting a few inches larger than the finished quilt size *3/4 yard cut into 2 1/2 bias strips for the bias binding We especially love the look of stripes on the bias for binding, we used a gray and white pinstripe. If you used 15 different fabrics like we did, you will have (2) 8 squares of each fabric for the throw or (6) 8 squares of each fabric for the Queen size. *From the white background fabric, cut (30) 8 squares for the throw or (90) 8 squares if you are making the the Queen size. 3

They will look just like the picture below: Now using a ¼ inch seam allowance, stitch around all

4 Stitching: Now form pairs of 1 white and 1 color fabric, right sides together and pin. You will need 30 of these pairs for the throw size and 90 for the Queen. They will look just like the picture below: Now using a ¼ inch seam allowance, stitch around all four sides. It is best to stitch in an assembly line fashion. Keep feeding your blocks into the machine and stitch them all at the same time. 4

Now you will have a block that is completely sewn

5 Now you will have a block that is completely sewn shut on all 4 sides. Using your ruler and rotary cutter. Cut the square in half diagonally in both directions. You will end up with (4) half square triangle blocks that look like the picture above. Now press these blocks open, and they will all look like this: 5

These are your half square triangle blocks, Wasn't that easy!? They should measure about 5 square at this point. Now you will want to stitch them into pairs.

Half of your pairs (30 Throw or 90 Queen) will be the top and the other half will be the bottom.

You will be making 60 pairs for the throw and 180 pairs for the Queen. BUT,pay close attention here! You will have two types of pairs, the top of the chevron and the bottom of the chevron. Half of your pairs (30 Throw or 90 Queen) will be the top and the other half will be the bottom. You also will press your seams to one side, all of the tops will be pressed to the right and all of the bottoms will be pressed to the left. Top Chevron Pairs Bottom Chevron Pairs Now construct all of the pairs into rows. Each row will consist of 5 pairs for the Throw size and 9 pairs for the Queen size. 6

7 I suggest laying all of your pairs out on the ground or a design board to decide where the best placement is. You will have 12 rows (half will be top rows and half will be bottom rows, see pics below) for the throw size and 20 rows for the queen size. Remember all top rows will have all seams to the right and all bottom rows will have all seams pressed to the left. This way you can butt the seams perfectly and your rows will have perfect alignment. Top Row Bottom Row Now you will stitch all of your rows together to complete the top. Again 12 rows for the throw and 20 rows for the Queen. Once your whole top is stitched together, you can cut a curve into the corner's of the quilt, like we did, or keep it square as it is now. Now you are ready to baste your top to the backing, machine quilt and bind! This quilt is very simple to quilt on your own machine if you are up to it. We just mimicked the chevron pattern for the machine quilting. We are sharing this as a Free pattern, so go ahead and duplicate and share.
