1 ZIG ZAG SET LAP QUILT Skill Level: Beginner Designed By Alexandra Henry Make this easy to sew, but beautiful quilt using a focal print for the 10 blocks set on point. The zig zag is created by using two different flowing fabrics. The sample used fabrics by M & S Textiles, Australia - Where Dreams Come Alive. A pieced 10 block may be substituted for the plain block. The same fabric can be used for B and C if desired. Just double the amount required. The measurements are so that the larger triangles will be cut in the quarter square triangle method and the smaller triangles will be cut in the half square triangle method. Cutting in this manner will keep the bias edge away from the outside edges of the quilt. Two Block Quilt Page 2 of 7

3 Step 2. Preparing Triangles Place a rotary ruler diagonally across each of the and 77 8 squares as shown (from point to point). Cut along the ruler, creating two triangles from each square. Set the smaller triangles aside. Leave the larger triangles in place to make the second cut on those. Left-handed Ruler Right-handed IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT CUT THE 10½ FABRIC A SQUARES. Ruler For the larger triangles only (153 8 ), rotate the ruler as show in photos and make a second cut from corner to corner. This creates 4 triangles with the long side more stable. 5 Step 4. Sewing (Make 14) Place one Fabric C large triangle on the upper right side of one 10½ square of Fabric A with right sides together. Align the upper corner as shown. Stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. Press seam towards the square. Repeat with one Fabric B large triangle on the opposite side of the Fabric A square. Press seam towards the square. C A B Step 5. Sewing Unit 2 (Make 2) Place one Fabric C small triangle on the upper right side of one 10½ square of Fabric A with right sides together. Align as shown. Stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. 6 Step 6. Sewing Unit 3 (Make 2) Place one Fabric B small triangle on the upper right side of one 10½ square of Fabric A with right sides together. Align as shown. Stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. Press seam towards the square. Repeat with one Fabric C large triangle on the opposite side of the Fabric A square. Press seam towards the square. This unit will be rotated when sewn into the column. Unit 3 Step 7. Sewing Unit 4 (Make 2) Place one Fabric A large triangle on the upper right side of one Fabric C large triangle with right sides together. Stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. Press seam towards the Fabric A triangle. Unit 4 Step 8. Sewing Unit 5 (Make 2) Place one Fabric A large triangle on the upper left side of one Fabric B large triangle with right sides together. Stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. Press seam towards the Fabric A triangle. This unit will be rotated when sewn in the column. Unit 5 Step 9. Set aside two small Fabric B and two small Fabric C triangles. These will be used when sewing the columns of units. Zig Zag Set Quilt Page 6 of 7

7 Step 10. Sew the Units into Columns Following the chart on Page 4, sew the units in columns. Use a ¼ seam allowance. Press seams open. Add the small triangles set aside in Step 6 to the top and bottom of Column As as shown in picture. Sew the columns together as shown. Press seams in one direction. Step 11. Finish quilt Cut backing and batting to fit. Layer quilt. Quilt as desired. Bind quilt. Zig Zag Set Quilt Page 7 of 7
