1 FINISHED SIZE & MEASUREMENTS 70" x 72" TOOLS Rotary mat & cutter 6" x 24" clear quilting ruler Iron Straight pins MATERIALS Three design rolls from Fox Field collection 8 strips for binding (included in kit) Three pieces in 1/3 yard cuts for diamond centers (included in kit) 5 yards of your choice fabric for backing 100% cotton thread 80" x 96" batting CUTTING 1. From one of the three 1/3 yard pieces trim the edge to give yourself a good clean edge to measure from, about a 1/2 is plenty 2. Cut a 4 1/2 x WOF strip 3. Set the first strip aside and cut a second 4 1/2 x WOF strip 4. Cut two more identical sets of 4 1/2 strips from each of the remaining two 1/3 yards for a total of six strips 5. From one of the 4 1/2 x WOF strips line up the long bottom edge of the strip the 60 degree line on your ruler 6. Use your rotary cutter and cut to the right of the ruler to create the first 60 degree edge and to trim off the selvages 7. Line up the 4 1/2 line of your ruler the edge cut in the last step and the 60 degree line on the ruler the bottom edge of the strip 8. Use your rotary cutter and cut to the right of the ruler to create the first (two) diamond shapes 9. Check to make sure the cut is measuring correctly by folding the diamond in half matching the bottom point to the top point, the folded edge of the diamond should connect both side points 10. Continue cutting diamonds from the six 4 1/2 strips until you have cut a total of 25 diamonds 9- orange Hoppy Dot 8- mint Hoppy Dot 8- purple Hoppy Dot 11. Choose one diamond from each of the three colors and cut in half from the top point to the bottom point to create a total of 6 half diamonds. These will become the side, set-in diamond blocks. 12. From your three design rolls (90 strips) select 22 strips, avoid the hoppy dot strips that match the center diamonds (If you want to be an over achiever you may starch and press these strips before you cut them but it is not necessary) 13. Cut each strip into 4 pieces. Two- 8 x 2 1/2 and two- 13 x 2 1/2. Keep the 4 matching pieces together until they are sewn. Set these aside and label them Round One - Full Diamonds 14. From the remaining Design Roll strips select 22 matching sets of strips (two identical strips per set). 15. From each set of strips cut two- 14 x 2 1/2 strips and two- 21 x 2 1/2 strips. Keep the four matching pieces together until they are sewn. Set these aside and label them Round Two - Full Diamonds 16. From the Remaining Design Roll Strips select 6 individual strips 17. From each strip cut one- 10 x 2 1/2 strip and one-13 x 2 1/2 strip. Keep the two matching pieces together. Set these aside and label them Round One - Half Diamonds Craftsy.com 1 Sympoz Inc. d/b/a Craftsy is not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by or in any way officially connected any of the products featured in this video. 2 18. From the Remaining Design Roll Strips select another 6 individual strips 19. From each strip cut one- 14 x 2 1/2 strip and one-18 x 2 1/2 strip. Keep the two matching pieces together until they are sewn. Set these aside and label them Round Two - Half Diamonds 20. Set aside 8 more strips for the binding 21. Starch and press the Cream fabric (1 1/4 yard) to prepare cutting the top and bottom set in triangles 22. Trim off the raw edge of the one side of the cream fabric to create a clean edge to measure from 23. Measuring from the clean edge cut in the previous step cut two strips, 12 3/4 x WOF 24. Begin cutting from the selvage edge, line up the 60 degree line on your ruler the bottom, cut edge of the 12 3/4 strip. The ruler should angle away from the selvage edge. Use your rotary cutter to cut along the right edge of the ruler. 25. Rotate the ruler, use the opposite 60 degree ruler line and line it up the bottom cut edge of the 12 3/4 strip while lining up the outside edge of the ruler the top right corner of the strip. 26. Rotate the ruler again, use the opposite 60 degree ruler line and line it up the bottom cut edge of the 12 3/4. The ruler will angle away from the cut edge. Begin cutting at the bottom corner of the 12 3/4 strip 27. Continue rotating the ruler and cutting triangles until you have cut a total of 10 triangles. Check after each cut to make sure each triangle is staying true to size and that all ten triangles are uniform in shape. FULL DIAMONDS - ROUND 1 1. Collect your full diamonds and the pile of strips labeled Round One- Full Diamonds 2. Select one diamond and one set of two matching 8 1/2 x 2 1/2 strips. Line up the first strip along the bottom right edge of the diamond. Allow the top edge of the strip to extend at least 1/4 past the side point of the diamond. Allow the bottom point of the diamond. (Every strip will be stitched from the side point toward and past the top or bottom point) 3. Sew a 1/4 seam beginning at the side point and 4. Line up the second 8 1/2 x 2 1/2 strip along the top left edge of the diamond. Allow the bottom edge of the strip to extend at least 1/4 past the side point of the diamond. Allow the remaining length of the strip to extend past the top point of the diamond. 5. Sew a 1/4 seam beginning at the side point and 6. Press both strips away from the center diamond. 7. 5 ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP 1. Assemble the Diamonds, Half Diamonds and Top/ Bottom set in triangles in diagonal rows according to the assembly diagram. PRESS ALL SEAMS OPEN DURING ASSEMBLY!! Do not cut the points on any of the seams, these will be used to line up the rows later. Read through the Assembly tips before beginning 2. Label each row by number. I use numbered pins, if you don t have numbered pins you can use a regular pin to attach small pieces of numbered papers to the top of each row. A quilt wall or place to lay out all of your blocks is really helpful before you start sewing. A quilt wall can be a simple as a sheet of batting hanging on a wall. 3. Begin by sewing the blocks and set in triangles together to form 8 rows, press all seams open 4. Sew rows 1 through 8 together. Press all seams open BACKING 5. Leave the backing fabric folded in half, selvage to selvage, the way it comes off of the bolt. Fold the length of the backing piecing half again (raw cut edge to raw cut edge) and trim off the fold. You will now have two backing pieces that measure approximately 90 x WOF 6. Trim off the selvages. 7. With the two backing pieces RST sew the length (90 edge) 8. Press seam open. Press the entire backing piece. Unpressed backing fabric is the cause of most tucks and wrinkles during the quilting process. 9. Now your quilt top is ready for quilting. 10. Use the remaining strips from your design rolls for Binding. ASSEMBLY TIPS: Lining up a set in triangle and a half diamond: Place the two pieces Right Sides Together (RST). Line up the top point of the triangle the top point of the half diamond. The bottom point of the triangle should extend 1/4 past the half diamond. Pin both ends. The needle of your sewing machine should fall in the V created by the overlap of the two shapes where the triangle extends past the half diamond. Press seam open. Lining up two diamonds: Line up two full diamonds RST. Allow the top point of one full diamond extend 1/4 past the side point of the other full diamond. The other end of the seam will line up the same way the top point of one full diamond extending 1/4 past the side point of the other full diamond. Pin both ends of the seam in place. Press seam open. Lining up the rows: By pressing the seams open when assembling the rows a small triangle created from the seam will be sticking out about 1/4 past the row edge. Place two rows RST, line up the two little seam triangles and pin where the two seams crass each other. This will create a near perfect matching of points, if you are into that sort of thing.
