Using masking tape, tape edges to surface so backing is flat, but not stretched taut. 3 Place 54 square of batting on backing, centering. Place quilt top right side up on backing/batting, centering. Smooth all layers. 4 Using curved rustproof safety pins, pin through all layers spacing pins approximately 4 apart, beginning in the center and working out towards edges. 5 Machine quilt as desired, removing safety pins as you go. The sample quilt was machine quilted in an allover feather design. 6 Stitch a scant G inside quilt raw edges, through all layers. McCall s Quilting 1

Trim seam allowances to G ; press open. Fold pieced strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press well to complete double-fold binding. 2 Trim quilt backing and batting even with raw edges of quilt top, making sure corners are trimmed to an accurate 90 angle. Diagram I McCall s Quilting 1
14 Quilt Along Accent on Amish Lesson 9 Applying the Binding Lesson 9 Applying the Binding In this final lesson we attach the binding and finish the quilt. In lesson 9 we learn: Sewing binding to the quilt Mitering the corners Joining the binding ends Hand stitching binding to the back of the quilt and finishing corners to get your free video lesson 9 started. At the end of this lesson you will know all the techiques needed to make this lovely quilt. Applying the Binding 1 Open and trim beginning tail of binding at 45 angle (Diagram I). Diagram I McCall s Quilting 1
15 Lesson 9 (continued) 2 Beginning at least 10 from a quilt corner, pin pressed binding to 1st side of front of trimmed quilt, raw edges aligned, leaving at least 8 of binding free at starting point (for joining ends). Use G seam and walking foot or dual feed function to stitch binding to quilt along 1st side (Diagram II). Stop G from 1st corner (Diagram III), backstitch a few stitches, and remove quilt from machine. 3 Fold binding back on itself with raw edges lined up with raw edge of 2nd side of quilt, forming a 45 angle (Diagram IV). Fold binding back over itself, raw edges even with raw edge of 2nd side of quilt (Diagram V). Starting G from corner and securing with a few backstitches, sew binding to 2nd side of quilt, stopping G from next corner. Remove from sewing machine. In same manner, miter corners and sew binding to 3rd and 4th sides, stopping about 12 from starting point. Diagram II Diagram III ¼ Diagram IV fold Diagram V McCall s Quilting 2
16 Lesson 9 (continued) A B C D E F 4 Align raw edges of binding tails with raw edges of quilt sandwich (Photo A). Open ending tail of binding and pin in place. Open beginning tail of binding and smooth it over ending tail, keeping binding raw edges aligned with raw edge of quilt sandwich. Draw 45 line on ending tail, tracing along trimmed edge of beginning tail (Photo B). Draw 2nd line H out from the 1st drawn line, making sure 2nd drawn line adds H to length of binding strip (Photo C). Cut on 2nd line (Photo D). Place binding cut edges right sides together, aligning cut edges and offsetting points so strips match G from edge (Photo E). Sew seam and press open. Press loose portion of binding in half lengthwise. Align with edge of quilt and finish stitching binding to quilt. 5 Fold binding to quilt back, far enough to cover trimmed edges snuggly and cover the stitches that attach the binding to the quilt (Photo F). Hand stitch in place, taking a few small stitches in each mitered corner to secure folds. Finishing the Quilt 6 Add a label to your quilt back. You may also wish to add a hanging sleeve.
