2 Pattern Notes & Needs Skill level: intermediate (paper piecing experience) or beginners may follow videos for assistance at threadedquilting.com/tutorials Pattern notes: Included are three different sized block templates: 8, 12 and 16 finished. Because each size option has multiple pages, it s recommended to print only the templates needed (see next section for page guide). Sew templates in numerical order according to markings. After template sewing is complete, trim around the outside of each template by aligning the 1/4 line of a rotary ruler with the solid outer edge of each unit instead of cutting on the dashed reference lines. For accuracy, use pins to align units before seaming. When sewing units together, extend the seam on each end of the solid line (as illustrated in Fig. 14 on p. 5). At this stage, seam allowances will naturally want to go to one side. It will be easier to press to that side but you may also try pressing open if seam bulk is an issue. Template prep: 8 block templates - pages block templates - pages block templates - pages Print the template pages on your preferred foundation paper (regular copy paper will work). IMPORTANT: to ensure templates print at the correct size, make sure the print dialog box does not have the scale to fit box checked. Type 100% in for scale or select actual size. Check 1 square for accuracy. Cut around each template piece A - U (referred to as units going forward), taking care not to cut into the surrounding seam allowances. Group into like units: A-D, E-H, I (only one - star center), J-M, N-Q and R-U. Fabric selection: Instructions include the use of four fabrics shown on page 2 (Fig.2) but use your creativity to come up with any combination of fabrics you choose. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Contrast makes this block shine! Select fabrics that have great contrast (at least one light and one dark fabric would be a good place to start). Because of the small patches (especially in the 8 block), solids and small-scale fabrics work well. Be aware of directional prints. 3 Cutting Fabric 1 - background (white, light) Fabric 2 - star center, tips and squares (gold, medium) Fabric 3 - contrasting spines (green, dark) Fabric 4 - star points (gray, dark) 2 Pre-cutting fabric (optional): Follow the chart below (Fig. 3) to rough cut fabrics. The chart shows the size and quantity needed along with the applicapble unit letters the fabrics will be used in. To stay organized, group the fabrics with the paper templates as you cut. 4 Sewing Set sewing machine stitch length to 1.5 or smaller. Begin with Unit A. Look at the orientation of the rectangle in Fig. 5 for help in placing and sewing all diamond star tips. Use the longer edge of the rectangle aligned with the background triangle for help in placement. 4 5 Seam, press (finger-press or dry iron), complete the rest of the sections, trim. Repeat for Units B, C and D. Sew Units E - H. Refer to Fig. 5 for help in placing the fabric for the diamond shaped star tips. Complete Unit I, the star center. 6 Sewing, continued Seam Units A-D to their corresponding Units E-F (circled in Fig. 10 on p.4). Fig. 11 shows what the units look like pinned before seaming. Extend the seam into the seam allowances beyond the solid black line (see arrows in Fig. 14). 11 Next, seam all of the Units N - Q to their neighboring Units R - U (circled in Fig. 12). 7 Sewing, continued Next, seam Units J - M to the segments created in the previous step (circled in Fig. 15). Close-ups of unit alignment and seaming are shown in Figs. 16 & TIP for point matching! Line up points by pushing a straight pin through one point and then through the matching point in the second layer. Try keeping these pins perpendicular (Fig. 18). Place more pins to secure the pieces together (Figs. 11 & 20). Once adequately secured, remove the floating or reference pins before sewing Jessie Zeigler for Threaded Quilting Studio 6

8 Sewing, continued Sew segments into rows and then sew the rows together to complete the block. Fig. 20 shows a close-up of pinning before the final seam is sewn.
