1 Basket Block Layer Cake Quilt A Long Sarah Vanderburgh You will need 3 10 inch squares or *2 fat quarters {Fat Quarter users be sure to check out the last page a special P.S. cutting chart for you!} Please read through and look at the photos before cutting into your fabrics. Choosing Fabric : Tips 2 fabrics {A & B} are used for the basket. Low contrast between these two prints will work. I recommend one large print from the line, and a medium print.

I suggest a smaller, non-directional print.

2 Choosing Fabric : Tips 2 fabrics {A & B} are used for the basket. Low contrast between these two prints will work. I recommend one large print from the line, and a medium print. Directional prints are okay you may just want to preview the cutting photos before you decide which way to cut into the print. 1 print {Fabric C} is for the background. I suggest a smaller, non-directional print. You will want it to contrast with the 2 prints chosen for the basket and to contrast well with your accent fabric as it will be on the outside edges of your block. *If you are using fat quarters, you can choose to use only 2 fabrics one for the basket{ cut Fabric A and Fabric B pieces from one print }, and one for the background. Pick a print with lots of allover busyness for a fun basket! Check out Page 10 too!! Cut Fabric A To make the best use of your 10 inch square, cut in sections as described below. Cut 2 7/8 square in half on the diagonal. Cut across the width, 1-2 ½ strip.

3 Subcut into 1 4 7/8 square and 1 4 ½ square. Cut 4 7/8 square in half on the diagonal. From remaining strip, Cut across the width, 1 2 7/8 strip. Subcut into 1-2 7/8 square. Cut 2 7/8 square in half on the diagonal. Cut across the width, 1-2 ½ strip. Subcut into 2 2 ½ squares. You will have extra fabric. Cut Fabric B Cut first strip 2 7/8 x 10 Subcut in the following order: Cut 1 2 7/8 square Cut 2 7/8 square in half on one diagonal. Trim rest of strip to 2 ½ wide.

4 Cut Fabric B Cut first strip 2 7/8 x 10 Subcut in the following order: Cut 1 2 7/8 square Cut 2 7/8 square in half on one diagonal. Trim rest of strip to 2 ½ wide. Subcut into 1 2 ½ x 4 ½ brick and 1 2 ½ square. Cut next strip 2 ½ x 10 Subcut into 2 2 ½ x 4 ½ bricks. Discard extra. 5 CUT FABRIC C Cut first strip 4 7/8 x 10 Subcut in 1 4 7/8 square. Cut square in half on 1 diagonal. From remaining, cut 2 2 ½ squares. } Sew the triangles together, then join to the squares and rectangle.

Then sew units together. Again, press to the basket fabric.

7 Sew the pieces together in rows first. {Photos go in order from top row of block to bottom row.} Sew the triangles together, then join to the squares and rectangle. Press towards the basket fabric. Sew the basket squares, then centre bricks. Then sew units together. Again, press to the basket fabric. Press seams in this row away from the middle brick. 10 P.S. for Fat Quarter Users Here are some alternate cutting measurements IF you are using 2 Fat Quarters. You can cut your middle background square as 1 piece 4 ½ square You can cut your side basket pieces as 1 piece 2 ½ x 4 ½ bricks {you need 2} You can cut your top basket corner pieces as 1 piece 2 ½ square {you need 2} You will also have more of your fabric to cut into which means you can fussy cut to make prints go in the direction you want. I *could* have cut an extra 4 7/8 basket square to make my bottom triangles the same. Enjoy! Use photo above as your Layout Guide. Continue with block assembly on Page 6.
